Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

22 tubs of yoghurt or one capsule?

June 30th 2008 12:22
ok ill give it a go!

after years and years of regularly taking antibiotics due to chronic sinus infections i decided to try this new probiotic to help raise my lowered immune . . . i may have just fallen for a convincing advertising campaign but i thought it sounded like a brilliant concept!

inner health plus

INNER HEALTH PLUS DAIRY FREE
High Potency Probiotic Capsules
30 or 90 Capsules
Each capsule contains:
25 Billion Good Bacteria
12.5 Billion Lactobacillus Acidophilus (NCFM) Organisms
12.5 Billion Bifidobacterium Lactis Organisms

One of the strongest and most convenient medical strength acidophilus available in Australia. Medical Strength therapeutic strains of Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. Suitable for dairy and lactose intolerant people who want to maintain their intestinal health.

Inner Health Plus promotes the growth and adherence of beneficial intestinal bacteria. The formula combines Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Lactis, Colostrum, and ProbioplexTM

Lactobacillus acidophilus (NCFM strain) is therapeutic strain of acidophilus which is acid and bile resistant. It adheres to the gut wall and combines well with Bifidobacteria to provide a balanced, holistic approach to probiotic supplementation.

Bifidobacteria comprises about 90% of all beneficial bacteria in the mature large intestine, and makes up 99% of endogenous beneficial probiota in breast-fed babies. Bifidobacterium lactis (BBL strain) has been specifically developed to repopulate the intestine quickly for maximum benefit. It also adheres to the gut wall and rapidly repopulates intestinal flora levels that have been reduced by antibiotic or oral contraceptive use.

Just having the right strain of acidophilus is not enough to be therapeutic. To be truly effective, a supplement intended to repopulate and rebalance the bacterial cultures in the human gut should also contain an immunoglobulin concentrate derived from colostrum (the first milk secreted during lactation).

ProbioplexTM is a immunoglobin concentrate which increases the adherence and nourishment of the lactobacilli to speed up their colonisation of the gut wall. Inner Health Plus is one of a small number of products that provide both the good bacteria with a specially designed complex (ProbioplexTM) to assist in restoring healthy intestinal flora and achieve maximum adherence in the human gut. ProbioplexTM is a specially designed complex of rice maltodextrin and lactalbumin. It is a biologically supportive matrix designed to encourage the growth of probiotic organisms.

The Yoghurt Myth

Many people believe that eating a tub of yoghurt will give them all the acidophilus they need but in many cases you’d have to eat at least 22 tubs of yoghurt to get the same amount of good bacteria contained in just one Inner Health Plus capsule.

To effectively repopulate and rebalance the gut, these bacteria need the right environmental conditions and a culture strength of at least 2 billion live organisms per gram! This is about 75 times the strength of good bacteria available in the best yoghurts, and 7,500 times more than some!

The varieties of bacteria contained in most yoghurts are not well adapted for the human gut, and often they are not plentiful enough to have a significant therapeutic effect. Often the acidophilus used for yoghurt cultures are ‘transient bacteria.’ That is, they are chosen for their taste properties rather than their therapeutic ones. This bacteria does not attach to the bowel wall and will generally pass straight through. Therefore, the user will experience no benefit whatsoever aside from the pleasant taste.

The bacteria that live inside us are very well adapted to our internal environment, needing specific ranges of temperature, pH (acid/alkali balance), nutrients, etc., to flourish. The bacteria present in yoghurt produced at or around room temperature are unlikely to flourish when exposed to conditions that exist inside us.

Storage: Store at 2°C to 8°C. (Refrigerate. Do not freeze.)

I had a flatmate once who swore that live yoghurt was the best cure for thrush. Sounds cold and icky to me.

As someone who suffers from sinus infections constantly I have tried several supplements to combat my supposedly inferior immune system, including probiotic capsules. Nothing seemed to make any noticable difference (I still got a sinus infection 3-4 times per year while using these supplements) and I'm now of the opinion that if you've got bad sinuses, you've got bad sinuses for good... Not the nicest thought in the world, but hey, it's better than tonsillitis right?

Lol, in seriousness, give them a go, they didn't work for me, but others do swear by them so you never know

hi Triple B,
thanks for the comment!
my sinuses became so infected that even antibiotics wouldnt clear them in the end, so last year i had a "nose job" to manually clear them out and correct a deviated septum that was stopping them from draining properly . . . i havent had an infection since but i still get conjested due to having a low immune . . . ive been trying to take vitamins . . . i may just have an unknown allergy . . . but i thought for $25 i would give the "good bacteria" a whirl!
thats a shame they didnt work for you . . . have you ever considered surgery?

No Morgan, she used to dip a tampon in the yogurt....trust me she wasn't eating it. Said it worked wonders. All I could think was what if some of it got stuck up there and went moldy?

Hi Morgan,

I've never really given surgery much consideration, I've had a few operations on my nose in the past for sporting injuries (insert obligatory nose-job jokes here), so I would have assumed anything causing these infections would have been spotted then... Of course it only really started getting chronic a few years ago (maybe 4 or 5) so surgery might be an option.

Hmmm, yeah the unkown allergy theory is a good shout, here's a scary thought of the day - my friend has had cats for around 15 years, then all of a sudden was getting really congested and his eyes were swelling... only gone and become allergic to cats all of a sudden!!! I'm sure it's rare though

hi Triple B,
i dont know how celebrities get nose jobs for no good reason . . . the blood and the pain and the tenderness . . . michael jackson must be out of his mind! (moreso than we think he is already! lol)
perhaps im one of those people who are allergic to the environment and need to live in a sanitised bubble?

Hi Morgan,

A timely piece as I am again deaf from an inner ear infection which continues to invade my throat, sinuses and right ear. It's horrible like having pain and a cicada inside your ear for weeks on end... off the the specialist again.

So does this work?

I have often wondered who would eat 22 tubs of yogurt per day (desides a dairy farmer) ...and whether it would be beneficial to them if they did?

Before I face the surgeons scapel I would love to hear any of your results from this "course?'

Cheers

Lilla ...

Do you know anyone, say people that work within the dairy industry that could hook you up with some yogurt? you could do an inner heath vs yogurt test..

Besides, if you're eating 22tubs of yogurt a day i don;t think you'll have to worry about thrush ever again!

hi Lilla,
when i had actual infections of the sinus often the best thing was pseudoephedrine and antibiotics to dry up and reduce the swelling in the infected area, i even had injections of antibiotic . . . some doctors prescribe steroids like prednisone but i found that ineffective . . . at the point where i was getting fevers i just got the surgery
i think all the medications i took over that period threw my system out of balance so im hoping a probiotic might improve my snuffly-ness and lethargy . . . ill let you know how it goes!

hi alt-ed,
people that work in the dairy industry? haha
i think i might know just the couple . . .
(see above for Ruby's trush advice)

Hiya Morgan

hhhmmm i often wonder about these things - what is myth and what isn`t.

But as a chronic allergy/asthma suffering I feel your pain - nothing like the big Rudolph nose/waterfall - my nose also develops this white strip across it, just to make it more noticeable!

Things I have tried over the years, which give relief -
* have a humidifier in your room with a bit of vicks, sleep with it in your bedroom
* have a food allergy test - you would be surprised... and dairy can actually irritate some peoples sinuses so eating 22 tubs of yogrt a day will only make things worse
* drain your sinuses by placing your fingertips on the bridge of your nose in line with your eyes and applying pressure all along the rims under your eyes, pressing down and running your fingertips along toward your ears. Repeat the same but this time go over your eyes following your eyebrows. Stop when you get to your temples. This works a treat for me.
* I know it sounds gross but snort warm salty water
* get a pot of boiling water and mix in some vicks, put a towel over your head and breath in the fumes... your sinuses will be clear in seconds!
* Zirteck... if you into medication!

I think Triple B is spot on - if you got sinus problems you stuck with them so you just gotta try and find ways of dealing with it when it flares up. I`ve had mine since I was born and they haven`t gone anywhere, the good little mates that they are... such dedication!

Hope you manage to find something that works. I think the longer you are on medication the weaker your immune system becomes so trying to find natural remedies would probably be better than medicating, but I`m no doctor so that`s just a personal opinion.

hi Ash,
well i do like to get taken in by every scam and scheme at least once! haha
but in all seriousness the science behind this does make sense . . . so i will give it a go until i see the expose on Today Tonight!
i have a strange sinus as i dont appear to have any allergies, but i agree with you on the warm salty water to flush the system out
thanks for your comment, i always enjoy hearing about alternatives treatments

I understand and feel your plight, Morgan. The one capsule sounds much more tolerable than the 22 tubs of yoghurt! <LOL>

Ash's tip with the dehumidifier with Vicks works a treat! In the US, they've actually started to retail Vicks plug-ins -- however I have yet to see it in the stores here. As an alternative, I put a couple of eucalyptus drops in an essential oil burner.

Let us know how u go with your trial.
