Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Apathy is the glove into which evil slips its hand

October 11th 2008 12:44

"The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men."
Plato

"My generation's apathy. I'm disgusted with it. I'm disgusted with my own apathy too, for being spineless and not always standing up against racism, sexism and all those other -isms the counterculture has been whining about for years."
Kurt Cobain

"Pitiful is the one who, fearing failure, makes no beginning."
Hindu Saying

"The ordinary man is passive. Within a narrow circle, home life, and perhaps the trade unions or local politics, he feels himself master of his fate. But otherwise he simply lies down and lets things happen to him."
George Orwell

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."
Will Rogers

"Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation."
Oscar Wilde

"This is a world of action, and not for moping and droning in."
Charles Dickens

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
Martin Luther King, jr

"Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?"
Edward Lorenz

Putting your fingers in your ears or changing the channel on your TV when you see disturbing news does not actually make the problem go away. Saying you are sick of hearing about issues just because they dont affect you personally just aids the repressors who are counting on your apathy.

Sick of seeing those starving kids in Africa? Sick of seeing birth deformities from chemical weapons in the Middle East? Sick of seeing teenage pregnancy and suicide in the West? Fed up with hearing about the global economic crisis, cruelty to animals, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, censorship, genocide, war crimes, and gay hate crimes all over the world?

The most important thing you can do is SAY SOMETHING, say it to anyone, say things people dont want to hear, offer an opinion or a suggestion, gets some new ideas out into the collective consciousness!

Dont sit there like stagnant water because you are content with your lot being ok . . .

Stagnant water breeds bacteria and parasites transforming it to poison . . .

Dont let your apathy be a tool in the hands of the wrong people!

Dont drone on about how human rights are not your responsibility. Dont pretend that promoting tolerance and diversity is not your business. Dont kid yourseflf that you are not a cog in the machine! Dont think if its not your gender, your situation, your election, then you get a free ticket to stop thinking and participating . . .

Your very apathy is actually encouragement!

I would rather hear an opinion opposite to mine and have to opportunity to exchange ideas in debate rather than have the topic shut down and dismissed with an "I dont care"

Well said, Morgan! I hate to hear people say they "don't care" or are "tired of hearing about it." Just blindly going along has been at the root of so many tragedies over time. But still it keeps happening, doesn't it?

hi S.L,
thats right!
burying your head in the sand never changes anything!
ps: i put the Will Rogers quote in just for you, some of his quotes are very wise indeed!

Plato! Not him, again. Aristotle will hear about this. He won't mind.

hi Norm,

Great collection. I'll add one of my favourites.

Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all -- the apathy of human beings. - Helen Keller

I'm with you, I'm sick of hearing people say, "the problem is too big, I can't make a difference". If more people actually did something the larger problems would become smaller and easier to deal with.

hi Cheryl,
i love your outlook!
and thanks for sharing another quote about Apathy . . . that was a particularly good one!
i really think even just voicing your opinion publicly gives others the confidence to voice theirs because they can see theyre not alone!
we are all connected and atrocities abroad have ripple effects at home!
thanks for the comment!

Oh I love a good collection of quotes!

And in a similar vein to the King quote above one of the presidential candidates said "the security of the American people is inextricably linked to the security of all people."

Hint 1: He has a grandmother who lives in a hut on the shores of lake Victoria in Africa.

Hint 2: It's not McCain.

I think anyone who says they don't care who wins the election because it won't affect them thinks they are living in, if not a different planet, then at least a different world.

hi Ruby,
yes quotes are fun!
and i like the Obama quote you have there . . . i respect people who can acknowledge there are global impacts from the decisions of individual countries!
people that think an election in one country doesnt have the potential to impact their lives are incredibly naive and defeatist . . . even our own little Kevin has led us away (slightly) from the course Howard would have plotted, one person may not create a revolution but they can certainly adjust the general direction!

Some people say if you read or watch about the evil in this world, then you attract it to yourself. I found the same person that said that is one of those evil people, mainly a thief. I guess thy are the one that say they are sick of hearing about the disturbing things cause they are contributing to it.

hi Anonymous,
beware the man that encourages you to turn a blind eye - he may have a vested interest in your apathy!
thanks for the comment!

Excellent post Morgan.

Please stop going through my computer files when I am not looking though! lol I have been doing a Quote of the Day as you might know. So I have a file with a list of quotes I want to use at some point. About two days ago I happened to add the following quote to the file. It is kind of scary that so soon after I put it in there you did a post that it fits with perfectly.

“So much attention is paid to the aggressive sins, such as violence and cruelty and greed with all their tragic effects, that too little attention is paid to the passive sins, such as apathy and laziness, which in the long run can have a more devastating effect." - Eleanor Roosevelt
