Graduation Bear

I graduated my post-grad course at Swinburne University of Technology this week. I studied online, and flew to Melbourne for the ceremony. One of my oldest and best friends lives in Melbourne so I stayed for a ten day week and took in a few cultural events as part of my week long celebration.
I was in town for The Famous Spiegeltent and saw two shows there. Bob Downe's 20 Golden Greats and Dixie's Tupperware Party. I recommend them both. They were hilarious.
Bob Downe is a queer icon here in Australia. His brand of camp cabaret was a riot. I often think live shows are the superior format for comedians. They can work the crowd and ad-lib and swear and be impromptu. He is apparently 53 years old now but hasn't aged a day since i first saw him on tv as a kid. He still has his million watt smile and lego-man helmet hair wig and safari suit. He came out in a tracksuit and noted that he looked like Sue from Glee (he did), and has several excited outfit changes to fashions of eras past. He made a timely joke about Margaret Court and gay marriage, and ran a fun feel-good show. His guest female counterpart was an awesome singer, reminiscent of Olivia Newton John.
Dixie Longate (get it? get it?) was a surprise. Ms Longate, a drag queen with a southern USA trailer park persona, talked a mile a minute and gave us all many a laugh, but then the lights dimmed and there was an element of sincere tragedy and triumph to the routine. Kudos to Dixie for great writing, it was a well-rounded meaningful tale, with bawdy humour interspersed. And for anyone that has ever been to a tupperware party (or mary kay, or nutrametics, or body shop etc) that characteristics of a sales host were mimicked seamlessly.
I also saw The Hunger Games and Mirror Mirror at the cinema. Reviews to come on Movie Train.
But for now, cheers to graduation! Share my enjoyment with Graduation Bear, my newest and dearest companion
