Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Graduation Bear

March 31st 2012 09:52
I graduated my post-grad course at Swinburne University of Technology this week. I studied online, and flew to Melbourne for the ceremony. One of my oldest and best friends lives in Melbourne so I stayed for a ten day week and took in a few cultural events as part of my week long celebration.

I was in town for The Famous Spiegeltent and saw two shows there. Bob Downe's 20 Golden Greats and Dixie's Tupperware Party. I recommend them both. They were hilarious.

Bob Downe is a queer icon here in Australia. His brand of camp cabaret was a riot. I often think live shows are the superior format for comedians. They can work the crowd and ad-lib and swear and be impromptu. He is apparently 53 years old now but hasn't aged a day since i first saw him on tv as a kid. He still has his million watt smile and lego-man helmet hair wig and safari suit. He came out in a tracksuit and noted that he looked like Sue from Glee (he did), and has several excited outfit changes to fashions of eras past. He made a timely joke about Margaret Court and gay marriage, and ran a fun feel-good show. His guest female counterpart was an awesome singer, reminiscent of Olivia Newton John.

Dixie Longate (get it? get it?) was a surprise. Ms Longate, a drag queen with a southern USA trailer park persona, talked a mile a minute and gave us all many a laugh, but then the lights dimmed and there was an element of sincere tragedy and triumph to the routine. Kudos to Dixie for great writing, it was a well-rounded meaningful tale, with bawdy humour interspersed. And for anyone that has ever been to a tupperware party (or mary kay, or nutrametics, or body shop etc) that characteristics of a sales host were mimicked seamlessly.

I also saw The Hunger Games and Mirror Mirror at the cinema. Reviews to come on Movie Train.

But for now, cheers to graduation! Share my enjoyment with Graduation Bear, my newest and dearest companion

These painting caught my eye as reminiscent of another Australian figurative artist, Charles Blackman.

Deep Pencil swallows Artist Quirk

September 14th 2010 11:30
It is a corporate merger, or take-over of sorts. Deep Pencil will now be the home of all authentic Artist Quirk posts.

All my previous work from Artist Quirk is now being moved to Deep Pencil.

My new posts on artists will be posted to Deep Pencil in future.

If you are subscribed to Artist Quirk www.artistquirk.com - there are 52 of you following me there - I would suggest you unsubscribe and just follow Deep Pencil.

My hand has been forced, and I'm not happy about it, but I do want to continue reviewing the arts for all my loyal readers.

So if you want to support the REAL Artist Quirk by Morgan Bell support it here. Unsubscribe from the impostor who jumped in my grave.

Unsubscribe as a protest against underhand dealings, lack of blog security, and kicking people when they are down.

Really disappointed in Admin on this one. But thanks to all my friends who notified me of the situation and make me want to stay here blogging on.

On a positive note, after possibly the worst 6 week bout with my back pain, I may have secured a really fantastic engineering position in Newcastle.

One week I had to lie down in the back seat of my parents car to be transported, and could not walk without the support of crutches. The next week I get offered the opportunity of a lifetime doing some hydraulic computer modelling. It started as a temp position, but apparently I impressed.

No doubt my next post will be about my crazy adventures in house hunting.
