Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Bad Taste Pastor: Bushfires Punish Abortion State

February 11th 2009 12:45
A crazy Pastor has come out of the woodwork to claim that Victoria is being ravaged by bushfire (181 dead, 80 missing, 7000 homeless) because god disapproves of the abortion bill which was recently passed.

Pastor Danny Nalliah told the Sydney Morning Herald that he had a dream that god would remove his protection from the state of Victoria as a punishment for decriminalising abortion.

"The Bible is very clear," he said. "If you walk out of God's protection and turn your back on Him, you are an open target for the devil to destroy."

Mr Nalliah also referred to Victoria as "the baby killing state of Australia" and was unapologetic about speaking "the truth" about the real cause of the recent bushfire devastation.

Victorian Bushfire Fund - 1800 811 700
Concerned about family or friends? 1800 727 077

The article was unclear as to whether Mr Nalliah had contacted the police about his allegation that god is the arsonist responsible for setting the fires. This information could be a valuable lead. God does have a history of spontaneously settings bushes alight to send messages.

However, it remains to be seen if god was the instigator of the crime with satan acting as an accomplice, coerced into executing orders, or if satan acted alone with only tacit approval from god. Satan also has a history of pyromania.

At this stage god may also be investigated for links to organised crime. Any attempts to bribe or intimidate the state of Victoria into joining his gang will be treated seriously. Mr Nalliah may be called as a witness to testify of god's threats to "remove protection" if his orders are not obeyed.

Dreams are credible evidence right?

hi alt_ed,
yes all natural disasters are the result of human sin
i dont know how you explain why Tasmanians are broken off from the mainland?
although i guess mainlanders dont really consider that a disaster . . .

Oh yes, of course, it all makes sense now. If that pastor ever became prime minister, we would all be so much better off. I wonder what people did to cause the economy crisis?

Evidence of god's retribution is all around. Look at the demise of Australian cricket. Divine interventionist choreography is also suspected in the Rugby League World Cup final. When it comes to punishing Australians and pulling them back into line, god doesn't have to think too hard. "Let them lose at games," he rumbles, "to New Zealand."

Australians: Nature has its sights on the U.S. mainland, from hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, rock slides and freezing temperatures. This is why we really, really feel your pain.

Now, with that having been said sincerely, let us address this clown writing in the Sydney Morning Herald. When things seem to be at their worst, we all need a laugh or at least a strong giggle to help us cope. The "pastor" has served his purpose for this end.

More seriously--It seems that when people give birth to misformed children or when economic catastrophies occur these types come out of the woodwork just as in natural disasters. If they were not so obviously in self-denial of reality, we might have a chance at helping such misguided souls.

No God of love wants to kill innocents, burn precious critters and land, nor does God want to lead armies to victory by ripping pregnant women's bellies open, as is written in the Old Testament.

Our Creator is not the author of this way of thinking, it is caused by too many people attempting to put a face on the Almighty and then appeasing their small minds by attributing human thoughts and actions to this Supreme Identity.

It is hoped that someday this clown will stop making jokes and open his eyes to reality. Only then will he see
the truth and that it will make him free.

But anon in the USA calmed me right down. Nice comment.

Just for the record, Satan does not kill people, he wants them alive so he can use them. Gods the one obsessed with killing.

Thank God, Tasmania isn't a part of the mainland? I suppose that's why God put all that desert between the good people of Victoria and the not so good people of Western Australia.

I have to agree with Anon in the US that a God of love wouldn't want innocents to be hurt for no reason. I believe that when establishing His creatiion He laid down certain physical laws.

Those laws would possibly include for Victoria that if you don't consistently backburn in a tinder dry, drought ridden area and there are 40 degrees, then perhaps there may be a bushfire. The laws that God established in nature will simply have that consequence. Humans just got in the way.

Also, I disagree with Kleonaptra that God is obsessed with killing. He wants us to live eternally, it's satan that wants us to die for the same length of time.

Danny Nalliah has a history of controversy, some of it less palatable than others. You may recall that he was once charged with hate speech against Muslims. I think he was eventually either acquitted or received a minor sentence, on the order of a fine and a forced apology.

Later, it emerged that his church was also the headquarters of the Coalition Against the Decriminalization of Abortion. So depending on your perspective, he's either a courageous firebrand or a shameless firestarter. There's a bushfire joke in there somewhere, but I don't think I 'm going to make it right now.

Gods the one obsessed with killing.

Hopefully not starting on too much of a tangent, but I agree with Kleonaptra on this one. I once ran across a site where somebody listed all the things that the Old Testament says you should kill people for doing/saying/thinking. If the Bible is really your basis for deciphering what God thinks, it renders the whole "God is love" thing sort of... well... hollow.

EDIT: Found it! evilbible.com

Hi Jose,
Reading those parts of the Old Testament out of context would probably make the majority think that God was pretty harsh with punishment. In context, the lives of the Hebrews were harsh and perhaps needed harsh limitations (I'm not a biblical scholar so refuse to say definitely. Just dropping ideas).

To Sandwich-shak:
Please do not attempt placing any connection to our Creator with all that killing/maiming stuff in the Old Testament. Doing this just sets up extreme dissonance in thinking peoples' minds. While creating more confusion this dubious effort solves nothing.

God is either (as described) as being love, or God is a selfish, childish tyrant wanting his way and showing partiality among his children. You cannot have it both ways. Attempting to rationalize it away by passing off the atrocities committed by the ancients as the will of God is unacceptable and reaching too far.

Thankfully, you have a relationship with our Maker or you would not have written in His defense. It is just that This Awesome Power does not need defending.

When one truly lets go of all preconceptions fostered upon by former generations, and takes a sober look at as many facets of this cosmos and its experiences as possible, one comes to the conclusion that we should stop trying to box in Our Maker and start to love and exist, while helping other do likewise.

hi Aimster,
in the article i linked to in the SMH it ended by saying
He had previously said drought and the world financial crisis could be partly blamed on human sin.
it didnt specify which sins and i have not researched his previous statement, but it seems he has a pattern of speaking like a loony

hi Chris,
oh no, not to New Zealanders! haha
is there any more severe humiliation than than?

hi Janet,
maybe being outrageous is part of some marketing plan for drumming up business for his church?
spreading his brand etc
its a bit sad that he has to jump on the coat tails of such a massive tragedy to get his 15 minutes in the limelight

hi Edward Allen (aka Anon in the USA)
thanks for the thoughtful comments
i know the USA has a history of sharing bushfire fighting (huge water capacity) helicopters like Elvis during our summer seasons
i like your description of Nalliah as a "clown" - brought a smile to my face

perhaps this "clown" is just the comic relief some people need after such a long time of sad news?

hi Norm,
there are so many evil states - i dont know how Nalliah can pick just one!

hi Sandwich Shak,
i think it was a bad combination of a natural cycle (ie: growth, destruction, and regeneration - bushfires are kind of like the earth shedding its skin) and a few deranged fire-bugs who purposely lit the bush alight, and that is the crime of arson
thanks for your discussion on gods intentions

hi Jose,
i didnt know Nalliah was charged with hate speech against muslims, thanks for the info
seems like he does have a history of inflaming senditive issues (pardon the pun)
thanks also for the link to evilbible, some of those sites are really interesting

hi Jason,
do you mean Chuck Norris?
or maybe that Stucky character with the gay reindeer?
or Donnie Davies with his anti gay music list?
add Pastor Nalliah and they would have an awesome quartet of idiots!

hi Jason,
so many pedophile reindeer, so little time . . . well thats what peter pan said!

hi alt-ed,
i wonder if theres room in Rome to house all the crazies . . . or should they be going to Jerusalem?

hi Sandwich Shak,

a couple of responses from religious leaders condemning Nalliah . . .

HERE is a statement by Mark Conner, senior pastor at Melbourne's biggest church, CityLife, saying:

Jesus makes it clear that when something bad happens it doesn’t mean that the person(s) affected by suffering are necessarily sinful or evil. Good and evil does not fall on people in some sort of vindictive manner. Jesus doesn’t say that these people are ‘under the judgment of God’ either.

and THIS ARTICLE says:

Uniting Church of Australia president Gregor Henderson speaks for most in saying Nalliah's claim is ludicrous, abhorrent and misunderstands the nature of God.

and

Danny Nalliah is wildly wrong. He is wrong as a theologian, a thinker and a pastor, and has shocked and appalled both the mainstream community and the vast majority of his fellow Christians. They feel he has brought the name of Christ into disrepute.

So true Morgan...the bible says that rain falls on both good and evil people. The same is said for the bushfires. Both good and bad people would have suffered over the past few days.

The beauty of this tragedy (if there could possibly be one) is where I see God's true nature coming through via the way people have rallied to provide clothing, food, blood, money and emotional support to the survivors.

I'm glued to the telethon they are currently having on channel nine and I get a lump in my throat to think that in these uncertain financial times people are digging so deep to give.

It's unfortunate that all certain people can see is the judgement side of things. Why don't we look at how people have rallied to support our fellow human beings?

I've not spoken to anyone in my daily life who has looked at this as being God judging 'us'. I think most Australian's just look at this disaster as being something that we need to live with if we want to reside in areas of intrinsic beauty and wealth.

I live in a small community bound by natural australian forest on three sides, and a lake on the other... our access was blocked two weeks ago due to fire, but I love the bush and thats why I live here... The only way to combat the threat of bush fire is to decimate the bush- but then, why live there? And I think many of the people affected by this NATURAL disaster in Victoria would feel the same. We choose to live our lives encompassed by our lands natural beauty, and thats what makes life worth living.

So yeah 'God' really doesn't come in to it.

hi Cheryl,
its sad when people try to rationalise that anything bad that happens to a person must have been "brought on" by the victim . . . its the same stupid mentality that people try to apply to rape victims
sometimes bad things happen that are completely beyond the victims control
thats life Mr Nalliah
even if everyone in Victoria lived their lives like the Amish it wouldnt stop a natural disaster given a particular set of environmental conditions
he is an incredibly insensitive person
thanks for your comment

hi Wilson,
yes that koala gulping down a bottle of water has become the international emblem of the Victorian bushfire tragedy
so many poor little critters, apart fom humans, have been killed or injured or displaced
i know Tasmania and many other states are sending feed for the domestic animals
but the wild native animals are harder to care for

So the Pastor must have come right out of the dark ages or more maybe Salem and the witch trials. What we've witnessed in Victoria has been the miracle of human spirit. Yes many perished and lives were lost and the emotional toll is what history will record. And for that record - most fires were deliberately lit by person or persons that had their own issues and instabilities - so what does the Pastor have to say about that particularly important issue - that someone could be so mentally ill that he would start a fire just to watch it and everyone around burn. Many wars were waged in the name of religion and many lives were taken in the name of right and wrong. No, this Pastor should hold his words and his flock and maybe see what everyone else is seeing, the generosity of perfect strangers who opened their hearts and wallets and will continue to do so until all these victims can rebuild their lives again. This they do not because of colour, creed or religion. This they do because they are Victorians - Australians and they have the spirit that this Pastor obviously misplaced.

May strength and common sense guide all these victims.

Anonymous, you're a twit! Controlled burns are just that - controlled. They are also done in winter months when conditions keep them contained. And please explain how 'they' caused the Bellingen floods. I didn't know Moses was on the warpath controlling the waters.

Your typo was the only real thing you wrote 'ingenuine footage'.

One of the fires was caused by a faulty electricity pole, a serial arsonist caused many others and the weather and the fact that no controlled burns had been allowed or done were all contributing factors.

Stop making idiotic remarks. People lost loved ones in these fires. Nobody is laughing.
