Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Beware Gay Music

October 15th 2008 09:37
Theres a fabulous little site called Love Gods Way which is like a spin off of the ever-popular Fred Phelps harmony and tolerance site God Hates Fags.

As you could probably imagine there is lots of intelligent stuff on Love Gods Way, but by far my favourite is the list of Gay Music that they suggest you prevent your children from listening to for fear of them being corrupted!

Now I can kind of understand the obvious ones like P!nK, Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright, Cole Porter, Tegan and Sara, The Gossip, Queen, The Village People, David Bowie, Lindsey Lohan, kd lang, Melissa Etheridge, Boy George, Jill Sobule, George Michael, Madonna, Elton John, and Clay Aiken.

Madonna

Basically anything created by a gay person or marketed at the queer community.

But I think that Mr Donnie Davies, the man responsible for compiling the list, is stretching it a bit with the inclusion of artists that are supposedly "Gay" . . .

I wonder if hard rockers like SlipKnot, Cannibal Corpse, NoFX, Motorhead, Metallica, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, The Killers, The Strokes, The Cramps, Ted Nugent, and Judas Priest realise they have been dubbed the epitome of "Gay"?

Is Audioslave "Gay"?

Audioslave

What about the wholesome stylings of The Jonas Brothers, Sarah McLaughlin, John Mayer, Wilson Phillips, Lisa Loeb, Nickleback and Barry Manilow? That seems like a pretty safe record collection to me . . . quite sweet and unassuming!

Would you describe Coldplay or Radiohead as "Gay"?

What about classics like Kate Bush, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, The Grateful Dead, Lou Reed, and The Doors?

Are we to believe that rap and RnB are inherently "Gay"? Maybe someone should tell Lil Kim, P. Diddy, Jay Z, Michael Jackson and Eminem!

Im absolutely amazed at this list!

Im pretty sure Marilyn Manson, The Cure, and Twisted Sister just got thrown in there for wearing makeup - obviously "Gay"!

Uh, I think someone is having you on. It sounds like a work of satire to me. This made me suspicious:

There are multiple levels of Gay Music. Some bands are what we like to call Gateway Bands. They lure children in with Pop Grooves and Salacious Melodies leaving them wanting more. They’ll move on to more dangerous bands and the next thing you know you’ve got a homosexual for a child.

And this was the giveaway:

We Strongly recommend that you burn the CDs. Make sure your child is watching. Make sure they can feel the heat. It is crucial that the image remains emblazoned in their young minds. They need to know that if they continue to listen to these bands they may Burn eternally as well.

hi Ruby,
apparently no one knows if the guy is for real or not - honestly you read things like this and think they MUST be satire but this one seems like authentic extremism - i will happily retract my disgust if i am wrong
currently even the wiki doesnt know

Oh wow, it's like a whole internet phenomenon, i have never heard of this guy before.

It's interesting that Wiki says that many Gay rights groups are treating the site as dangerous whether or not it is real as it would have the same outcome. It does say something though, doesn't it, that we can't even tell what is real and what is a joke?

hi Ruby,
yeah i like how they say if its supposed to be a joke its an offensive joke lol
i think that purely on how bizarre the list of bands is, like the lack of generational or cultural consistancy, i think it has been collated by suggestions sent via email . . . so even if he is joking, the people responding to him arent
the list has definately been added to since the last time i looked (about 6 months ago)
i would be more relieved if i was simply being gullible but i just get the feeling theres malice behind it

Oh I don't think you were being gullible. It was only a few choices in the wording that sent my alarm bells ringing. Like "salacious melodies" and this line
Make sure they can feel the heat. It is crucial that the image remains emblazoned in their young minds.
, to me read like the author was commenting on what religious imagery can do to kids, rather than actually espousing it. But I could be giving them too much credit!

Hey, maybe it's someone who hates Christians AND gays?

After reviewing the list. Wow, I listen to a lot of "Gay music" lol

Well, I agree it is dangerous either way, real or joke. It is just like in politics. Put the lies out there to be seen and many will take them as fact. Even if the person that put them out there comes out and says "no it's not really true, sorry about that." It still stays etched in the minds of many.

I am leaning toward the guy being an ass and the site being for real.

Ruby? Aren't Christians supposed to hate themselves and gays? Maybe I am thinking of Catholics. lol

Now onto a more important note (j/k of course) . . . Sheesh KISS is even overlooked on THIS list! Makeup, high heels, dress up in costumes, Gene Simmons's tongue all over, I can even show you a picture of Gene and Ace Frehley nearly touching tongues like in that Metallica picture....but yet they can't even rate on this list.

Gene

hi Ruby,
christians AND gays? haha
well they certainly wouldnt like those gay catholic saints i found!

hi Gene,
oh lool i really think you should send him an email and suggest KISS!
Donnie Davies claims to be a "reformed" gay so id say he hates himself a fair bit . . . reminds me a bit of that Will & Grace episode where Jack joins a group that is trying to reform gays in order to meet men! haha

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. There are a number of artists on this list I was unaware of and will use it to augment my current library. How's that for having your Cake and listening to it, too? Oh, wait- they're not on the list... yet.
(Gay twins? I always thought that sounded like it might be fun...)
