Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

breast implants are not a quick fix for self-esteem

June 16th 2008 09:17
women who undergo cosmetic surgery to enhance their bust dimensions are 3 to 4 times more likely to commit suicide compared to national averages (CLICKHERE for more . . . ) suggesting that women suffering from depression or low self-esteem may be opting to go under the knife believing it is a solution and becoming more than a little disappointed to find that being the proud owner of a super-perky set dont automatically lift the spirits and enhance quality of life . . .

Australias own Navy was recently ridiculed by the media for paying for breast implants for female officers, their justification was that the surgeries were done for psychological reasons (CLICKHERE for more . . . ) with the Navy believing that underlying mental problems relating to self esteem could be solved by giving women a bigger rack

"Just as there are in civilian life, there are some females who feel their breasts are too small and if their breasts were bigger, they might be more of a 'normal' woman . . . If they were lacking in self-confidence, this might provide the measure of self-confidence that would help them tackle their wider job. "

Neil James, Australian Defence Association spokesperson

perhaps instead of giving women bigger or better breasts we should be teaching them that the cup-size of their bra shouldnt be indicative of their worth?

how many women undergo breast augmentation in some desperate attempt to attract a partner or just general attention-seeking . . . certainly not all, im sure alot of confident level-headed women decide on the surgery to boost their careers (in the porn industry) or please their existing partners (if theyre dating hugh hefner) . . . are we finally going to admit that renovating the facade of a building doesnt actually strengthen the weight-bearing walls on the inside?

maybe you will lure a few more patrons in the door but will they be return customers?

breast surgery is a superficial fix . . . i would liken it to any kind of self-harming or mutilation . . . if there is no medical reason (ie breast reduction to ease back pain, breast reconstruction after cancer) then i would urge surgeons to act responsibly and actually excercise their duty of care by referring patients with pre-existing psycholocial issues to mental health professionals not the bargain box of saline implants . . .

i bet some women that get cosmetic surgery consultations proabably dont even know whether they want their breasts bigger or smaller . . . they just want to look like someone different, someone that is not themselves . . . i wonder how many surgeons hear women say "make me look like the kind of person other people love"?

Absolutely right, Morgan. Now a Brazillian Butt-Lift on the other hand... Different kettle of fish. Get one of those and you will be adored from all sides.

Ah. You make perfect sense, but... Would still love perfect body. Would still love Navy to pay for it. Without having to be actual sailor-woman.

hi Michaelie,
haha butt-lift . . . when did people become so desperately unhappy with themselves? it makes me sad just thinking about it!
there are so many perfect bodies, is carmen electra any more perfect than keira knightly or sandra bullock?
and even if i suddenly morphed into a duplicate of carmen electra i just dont think it would alter the big things like our sense of purpose, identity, family, community etc or suddenly give us better social skills or the ability to relate to others?
honestly i think its like a black person bleaching their skin white to combat racism, it doesnt actually alter where the problems stem from
(i know youve already agreed i just felt like more of a rant haha)

Rant away! I do so myself, because I know it's right. Also trying to convince my more subjective side. Which is not quite symmetrical. Lol.

One of the best analogies I have ever heard.

Not much chance of this though: then i would urge surgeons to act responsibly and actually excercise their duty of care by referring patients with pre-existing psycholocial issues to mental health professionals not the bargain box of saline implants

To paraphrase M.I.A in a way which will probably make her want to hit me hard, 'all i wanna do is KA-CHING!, and take you money'...

hi Ruby,
hey thanks for the praise
i am increasingly disenchanted with the medical profession as a whole . . . making money by taking advantage of the health problems of others is creepy and immoral
i dont know if you ever saw my rant about heath ledger but its yet another case where i just wonder what ever happened to having a "duty of care"

Very interesting post. I don't know how many times I've looked at myself nude in the mirror and found a few things worth changing, but I couldn't do it. People are made how they are for reasons, I think. If you're unhappy with your body try to change it naturally and avoid surgery. If there's nothing to do, talk to someone and find the root of the unhappiness... If possible. I dunno...

hi Whitney,
you are a wise woman!
i would have more respect for surgery if there was some art to it but it just promotes conformity, like the secret to happiness is being re-formed in a barbie doll factory . . . im thinking stepford wives . . . im all for choice and women should be able to have as much surgery as they desire, but i really do wonder if you had to pass a psych consult and various conditions (like transgendered people do before their surgeries) if there would be as many implants sold?
it just seems like a big myth perpetuated by men and cosmetic surgeons that breast implants will raise self-esteem . . . i see no truth in it

breast implants is a un-necessary operation, therefore is stupid. small breast are just as good (sometimes better) than large ones. Sometimes it has to do with proportion.

If you get implants your breast size is the least of your worries, I'd be more worried about your personality and state of mind

From my perspective, it makes me sad when women get breast implants. Yes, our society is big-breast obsessed, along with our morbid fascination for large phalli.

It makes me sad because it's a surgery to correct something that doesn't really need correcting. Some people seem to think that it's ok because anything that improves your self-esteem is worthy. I don't agree with that - having a realistic self-esteem is much healthier than having an unrealistic high self-esteem, according to an undergrad psych course here in Sydney.

the worst part is: small breasts are extremely sexy as well. Why isn't this realized? Is it because of the ludicrous mens magazines with the models with the pneumatic boobs?

Regardless of what type of surgery you get, it'll always be tough to be sexier than a woman that's down to earth, with a good sense of humour and likes a big steak. Rawr!

hi anon,
you make an excellent point about proportion, women come in all shapes and sizes, to think you can go around and stick the same pair of breasts on everyone to achieve automatic attractiveness is just crazy . . . if someone only likes you for your new implants are they even worth knowing?

hi Cibbuano,
now were you perving on Tina Fey on 30 Rock last night or was that just an amazing coincidence? haha
i think most super-thin or athletic women have fairly moderate or flat-chests . . . kiera knightly with double D breasts just isnt gunna happen, look at how crazy posh spice looks now! haha
"realistic self-esteem" what a great expression, see this is why women should go to trained psychologists and not the nip/tuck team if they are feeling down

tina fey on 30 Rock - I don't have TV, so I don't really know what you're talking about. Though I think Tina Fey is both hilarious and sexy. Especially when she nails scenes like this:

Hi Morgan,
I think what we look like has become a huge problem. Chances are not many of us are going to be born beautiful or perfectly proportioned, so why are goddesses shoved down everyone's throat? Perfect people with perfect breasts make up a minority of the population, The sooner everyone realises this the better,

haha Cibbuano
ok well then that is just freaky!
she is in the show "30 Rock" with Alec Baldwin as her boss at a TV station and last night he bought her a massive steak and asked her to come into his office to eat it just so he could enjoy watching . . . she thought it was creepy but she was hungry so she did it anyway and she devoured the whole thing before he had even turned around haha

hi Gaye,
i certainly dont think every female actor has implants but unfortunately ALOT do and if the majority of people who are filmed or photographed in underwear or swimwear or in the nude are surgically altered celebs . . . it warps our perception of how diverse the female body can be
and so many celebs get interviewed and say how the surgery made them feel fresher and younger and more attractive and opened more doors etc and i think they are just spouting the company line to justify their actions . . . i wish all women would just admit breast implants do not solve depression or low self-esteem

I never thought self esteem can be bought like candies in a variety store. It is supposed to be deeply rooted. Based on the good perception of one's real self. If it's implanted then it is not real. If someone's self esteem is boosted by something that is not real, then I suppose that person really needs a shrink.

very wise advice!
buying self esteem like candies at a variety store - fantastic analogy!
to implant self esteem is definately a bogus concept!

It really is sad the way that the media has portrayed the perfect woman as having ridiculous proportions. Either they want stick thin or big boobs or, even as you said, more ridiculously sometimes both.

The worst thing is they seem to be performing these surgeries on ever younger women who haven't even fully matured - it's beyond me!

My mother is a tiny person with huge boobs and all I've seen is her suffering years of excruciating back pain. I've always said, I got my mum's smile and my dad's chest and I'm kind of glad.

Great post!

hi Cheryl
haha what a great way to think about it!
i think we all want what we cant have . . . the grass is always greener on the other side and all that . . . i often envy the flat-chested girls, they can wear all the nice fashions and have them fit properly and excercise without strapping themselves down like a mummy and even go bra-less if they choose . . . im sure everyone contemplates or ponders "i wonder what i would look like shorter-curvier-thinner-muscl ey" etc but to undergo surgery is extreme and i think an assessment of ones motives is essential
thanks so much for sharing your opinions!

I could see where some plastic surgery could raise self esteem, but there are so many other ways that one could raise self esteem. There are just way to many complications with surgery, that I'd rather a surgery be helpful than aesthetic.

If bigger breast will make you feel better about your body..have at it. Just know go into it knowing that breast implants isn't a substitute for therapy. You will need to make yourself a better person on the inside as well. There is nothing wrong with it, just know that you may still have other issues with your self esteem that go deeper

its not a substitute for therapy, to self esteem issues still need to be treated outside the one-stop boob shop

herbalfoundation, there is NO WAY herbs will enhance breast size. The only way breast size will increase is through hormones, pregnancy, weight gain or implants.

What a crock of shit. They rip people off selling a product that can not and does not work. Medical Fact!

Yet another product playing on people's vulnerabilities and gullibilty.
