comedy that makes me a bit sad . . .
July 15th 2008 11:25
this is Jon Stewart from 1996 doing a stand-up comedy routine about America, Iraq, Israel, Canada, and Somalia
this clip is a blast from the past about wars, bombs, natural resources, and international relations . . . what is spooky is how long he has been saying these things and how much nothing has changed
Jon Stewart is a Jewish comedian who currently hosts a political satire program called The Daily Show which airs on Comedy Central in the USA . . . many of Jon's comedy routines and interviews are available on Youtube
Jon Stewart is 45 now, he would have been 32 when this comedy routine was filmed
i saw another joke recently about a man that fell into a coma in the 90s and woke up in 2008, he asked the doctor a series of questions to get his bearings on how the world had changed:
who is the president? Bush
where are the troops deployed? Iraq
funny how when things run in cycles it seems like we are caught up in some kind of a warped catch22 where we never learn from our mistakes . . . and i dont just mean politics or America, i mean the environment and the economy and power struggles . . . sometimes it seems like nothing changes at all, nothing progresses
catholics vs protestants, christians vs muslims, rich vs poor, men vs women, black vs white, money vs humanity
so many battles, no compromise, no "do unto others", no "walking a mile in someone elses shoes"
people live their whole lives and dont see a single thing change
im looking at a video from 12 years ago and (although it gave me a laugh) at the end i found it quite spine-chilling that i wouldnt have known the difference if it was made today

In the meantime, listen or watch any comedy, practically anything at all that you laugh at, and the overriding theme that you are laughing about is people's differences. If we all got along perfectly then what would there be left to laugh at...Funniest Home Videos!!! baaaaaaahhhhh!

From his remarks about bombing Iraq for no good reason right down to the joke about America running out of resources and not being interested in any country until that country has something America wants.
And you're right. It's comedy and tragedy all in one.

Generally speaking, I read Orble, and occasionally post, because I am interested in people and their opinions, and I love to write, and would like to one day become decent at it. I can get a bit annoyed when people blog who can't give a stuff about things like facts, or basic spelling, and then they expect others to give a stuff about what they write! Call me strange, but why write if you don't care about what you write or how you write it?!! I'm new to this blogging thing so maybe I just don't get it!

yep he totally nailed it!
i liked his impersonation of America knocking on Canadas door and just saying "get out!" haha
i think i found it a bit sad because i remember watching the Gulf War on TV as a kid, with all the night vision . . . 15 years later and the war is still on . . . its tiring that it never resolves
hi Chris,
ahhh a Newcastle boy, my spiritual home!
and by spirits i mean bundy rum!
i think of blogging more like a journal that i let everyone look in, its definately not academic writing or print journalism, more informal . . . but everyone has different styles and motivations . . . if i was getting graded or paid it would be a different story
thanks for the comments guys

that was pretty funny hey
i also liked how he likened the military rankings to a tennis seeding, saying surely it isnt Iraqs time to be playing America until they have beaten a few other countries
thanks for the comment

that expression is perfect for this post!
maybe when Jon Stewart is 62 he will have something new to joke about . . . but then again maybe not?
glass half full, or glass half empty?

Not directed at me but what a cracker of a line.
Morgan, one day you will be watching a film and lo and behold one of the characters will be speaking your own words...
