Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Craig McLachlan: Australia's answer to David Hasselhoff

October 22nd 2008 04:58
Craig McLachlan is cashing in on his own bad reputation. Long mocked for his vanity, Craig is now turning the tables and having the last laugh with an advertising campaign for Blu Ray.

Crig seems to be following in the footsteps of fellow gigantic joke David Hasselhoff who some years ago threw his hands up and surrendered in a moment of "if you cant beat 'em. join 'em". He is not the first to laugh at himself (think William Shatner, Kamal, Barry Crocker) ans considering how successful the gimmick is, im sure he wont be the last!

You probably remember Craig best for his role in TV soap Neighbours, or perhaps that terrible pop/rock single "Mona". He has been floating around the edges of the Australian entertainment scene for decades. Craig recently appeared as a guest star in the current TV drama Packed To The Rafters as an aged rock-star who played the pub rock live music circuit.

There is an workable element of humour in Craig appearing as a parody of himself. The Blu Ray commercial that is currently airing actually shows clips from "Mona" on the TV hes watching while advertising the product. He is using the public perception of his over-inflated ego and general dagginess to successful pull off a self impersonation.

Brilliant, I say!

hehehe ... love the harry high-pants and long and curleys in the old pic. At least he's got a bit of style now. Wonder if he'll do a Stefan Dennis and retreat back to Ramsey Street though...

Yeah ok so Craig McLachlan is a bit of a tool but check out this video clip... it's Jason Donovan's 'Too many broken hearts'.. Pay attention to when he starts playing the guitar in the clip (and see if you can hear a fucking guitar on the track) BAHAHA!

Ha ha! Thanks for the funny clips. Good on them I say. Funny thing is - Craig can actually act when he wants to - not so sure about The Hoff...

hi Fairy Dancer,
i think Craig has the potential to be a good actor, its just that he cant shake his own image . . . i guess now hes just embracing it!
have you seen Craig act in anything you particularly liked?

Hey, nobody is more likeable than when they make fun of themselves...that's why I'll always have a soft spot for Shatner.

Did you catch the commercial in Oz that featured Kevin Federline working as a fry cook and fantasizing about his glory days?

First reason I ever had to notice him.

Finally - Craig McLachlan has latched onto something we have all known for 20 years - that he simply had too many mirrors in his own home.

Pity it took this long for him to take a good hard look at himself in a different light.

At least he's Aussie enough to be able to take the p*ss out of himself now . . .

Look out Hoff - perhaps we should start to "Back the Mac".

hi D,
its weird how some people become so uncool that theyre cool again!
its good when people are really self aware and use self depricating humour . . . guarenteed laughs!
i was not aware of the K.Fed ad but now that you have mentioned it im really curious - i might go search YouTube and see if its available . . .

hi MNG,
the ability to take the piss out of ones self! haha
so Aussie!
i imagine Craigs house has framed photos of himself everywhere and a mirror over the bed!

hi Ruby,

Aww don't be too harsh on the poor guy!

You're probably right about the mirrors and framed pics though. How he didn't follow in Kylie's footsteps I'll never know

hi Journeywoman,

I love that ad, it's hilarious! Anyone who can take the piss out of themselves has to have a good sense of humour.

That photo of him and guy is scary! And thanks for the Jason filmclip Alt_ed, you know I can't unsee that (curled into a ball sucking my thumb now).

Craig also played in Grease on the West End I think and the Grease Arena show in Australia, plus he played Frank'N'Furter in Rocky Horror in Melbourne.

Go the Craig!

Hi Morgan,

I caught this adv. the other day and I have to say that i like Craig, and where he is taking this BluRay business with his vanity, at least he is honest about selling himself out, I agree.

hi Norm,

look i had to consult the Wiki:

McLachlan has also had success as a singer, capitalising on his popularity in Neighbours to score Australian and UK hit singles with pop tunes such as his remake of the Bo Diddley song "Mona" (AUS#3 / UK#2, 1990), "Amanda" (AUS#23 / UK#19, 1990), and "On My Own" (AUS#23, 1991).

three surprises there
1) Mona was a Bo Diddley remake
2) Craig had two other "hits" ive never heard of
3) Mona was technically released in the 90s

thanks you for your enquiry

You have to see the new Mexican film “AMAR A MORIR” where Craig appears as an Australian surfer in Ocelotitlan, a land where the mafia rules. It is a modern romance-drama film placed in Mexico DF and in some of great beaches in Michoacan, this production is full of beautiful landscapes and great latin actors like José María de Tavira (Mexico) and Martina García (Colombia). Check the trailer in different social nets and joy them. Check it at facebook, hi5, myspace and youtube
