Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

hahaha. it turns into a chain letter at the end. send this to five friends or you will die tomorrow!

it's a good idea, but it's not really non-partisan is it? all the stuff about healthcare, abortion rights, polar bears, it's pretty much asking (telling?) you to vote democrat. i guess it's just aimed at the slacker liberals.

hi Ruby,
well Amy Adams does say "the right to choose" AND "the right to life"
and Giovanni Ribisi says "the first ammendment" AND "the second ammendment"
haha
totally unbiased!
you are right though i would imagine the celebrities have pretty liberal politics even though they are trying to present it as unbiased as they can
i think they are mostly trying to motivate the young voters from Gen Y who listen to actors more than politicians
i think its also aimed at the disenfranchised black population who in the past have thought theres no point voting - i think thats why they have included "urban" role models like will.i.am, Jamie Fox, Usher, Benicio Del Toro, and Djimon Hounsou

it never ceases to amaze me that the country that prides itself on being the "greatest democracy n earth" has such poor voter turnout. it's usually around 40% though I heard on Insight the other day that some are hoping for a 60% turnout this year which would be absolutely massive.

i'm one of those people who would prefer others to vote against my candidate than not vote at all. i just can't believe that in a world where some people die trying to fight for their right to vote, others can just waste theirs away. i actually get really upset when people tell me they don't vote. i just don't get it. maybe it has to do with my family being from the middle east. even though they have the vote in Lebanon, there are so many other arab countries that don't or else voting is restricted and i just can't understand how people can not vote.

hi Ruby,
i forgot to vote once in a state election, just got too busy with personal problems and to be honest i didnt care that much because it was in NSW and Labor always gets in . . . the last Federal election i could hardly be bothered because i found the two options to be almost identical, but i was in TAS as wanted to vote Greens into the Senate because they really need it down here to prevent corporate corruption in the forestry industry
i can understand the apathy when the candidates seem exactly the same or you vote in a landslide seat
but i think in the USA just increasing the turnout could swing the vote big time!

I hear so many people, especially young people say "I'm not voting because I don't know who to vote for." My answer to that - do some research and figure out who to vote for. I totally agree that it is a travesty that Americans take their rights to vote for granted. I'll admit, sometimes it seems as if our votes don't count - when all we hear after an election is how voting machines didn't work, and people were wrongly denied their rights to vote - but if we don't vote, we can't complain. I like to complain, so I'm going to do what i can to be sure I exercise my rights.

hi Anonymous,
thanks for the constructive comment!
you make an excellent point!
theres no use complaining about something if you make no effort to fix it!
maybe one poor black kid wouldnt make much of a different but a million of them surely would!

I agree with the above sentiments that voting is vital for anyone who would be inclined to have an opinion. I posted recently about Craig Ferguson, who gave an amazing monologue about voting. If you're interested, the post is HERE.

hi Natalie,
thanks for the link, ill go check it out!
ideally people should be electing politicians who represent their opinions . . . but somehow america has turned into one giant corporation that doesnt represent the little people at all!
