Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

exploring MORE of my garden - it Is an acre you know!

September 9th 2008 03:50
i feel like i should have a frilly white dress and a parasol as i take a turn about the yard in search of frogs and butterflies and toadstools and fresh summer blosssoms . . . perhaps if i am lucky i will stumble upon a friendly garden gnome, fairy, or nymph in the mossy corners of shade? haha

once again i have been out and about with my camera (the mini Casio Exilim EX-Z77- CLICKHERE for more) trying to practice with one of the macro settings, aptly named "Best Shot - Flower"

so let me welcome you, if i may, to my journey of mixed vegetation - from native flowering gumnuts and wattles to the imports of and english country blooms - a floral treat for up-close nature lovers!

iota deville snuck into the background of this first one:

due to my enthusiam for the little camera i am entering into an art battle with alt_ed to challenge my creativity before the novelty wears off . . . if you are curious CLICKHERE to see the results

I've never been to Australia, Morgan, but I thought that our seasons were opposite from yours? It's the end of summer here, shouldn't it be winter where you live? Or are the pictures (stunning as they are) not recent?

Whenever they were taken, they're very nice!

Exactly S.L. the end of Summer for you is the end of WINTER for us... So it's coming into spring (when everything starts to blossom!)

hi SL,
thanks for the kind words!
yes well our seasons are supposed to be opposite here! haha i dont know what happening!
it is the beginning of spring here so we have just come out of winter and its just starting to get a bit sunnier even though the temperature is still quite cool . . . also im in Tasmania which is the southern most point of Aus, and an island, so sometimes we get different weather patterns to the mainland and avoid some of the storms . . . theres snow on the mountain range an hour south of me, but im on the sunny coast! (very bright!)
this set of photos were all taken yesterday

Very nice Morgan!!
Red flower is my favourite - I find the blue sky background brings out the colors and makes for BOLD colors.
How photo comp judge of me... LOL

Great pics Morgan.

Just a thought. . . if you happen to know what the flowers are maybe mention their names for us less informed. If you don't know just ignore me. OK, ignore me either way if you really want.

Becoming quite the master with your Casio, aren't you, Miss Morgan?

Some beautiful shots. Love the red flower. And the gumnuts, baby.

haha the gumnuts, baby!
that gave me a big smile!
yeah im all about the Casio at the moment, i lead a fairly uneventful life, and you know what they say about the minds of people who are amused by small things . . .

1. Cherry Blossom
2. Don't know
3. Camellia Japonica
4. Seaside Daisy
5. Gumnuts before the seed release
6. Gumnuts after the seed release
7. Grevillia
8. Wattle

I can find out about number 2 if your folks don't know the name, my mum has one. I grew up with a mad keen gardener.

Nice shots. Gum Nuts, eh?? I don't THINK we have them over here but I'm not very knowledgeable on flowers! The texture shows up pretty well and that's a test of any camera's quality. Hang on to it!!

Thanks Cheryl,

I never would have guessed 5 and 6 were the same thing in different forms. Like James said, not sure if we have Gum Nuts over here. If we do I want some for outside of our house. The after the seed release shot was my favorite pic of the bunch.

well done Cheryl!

(5) and (6) are from two different types of Gumnuts but the basic idea is as you said, once they open they have released seeds

the nuts pictured in (5) apparently have white flowers but theres none there at the moment

i just ducked out to the tree that Gene liked and got a couple of before and after transitions of the nuts from (6) from flowering to hardening up

and heres a Bottlebrush before and after flowering (two different bushes of the same species)

and this is a before shot of the Wattle (8) just before the buds flower

Wow Morgan I like those even more. That Bottlebrush after flowering is really cool too.

You guys have the coolest plant life there to go with the wildlife. I may have to go change my post about dream retirement locations to add plant life under my #4 choice.

hi Gene,
i guess we do have some weird and wonderful stuff, but you tend to take it for granted when youve grown up with it!

hi James,
you are right about the texture, i was impressed at the detail the camera is picking up too!

thanks for the comments everyone!
