Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

exploring my garden with a camera

September 6th 2008 05:56
i was given a new camera as a gift for my birthday, unfortunately all the instructions were in Japanese so ive been feeling my way through the settings

today i went out to the garden to check out the "flower" function

the camera is a tiny little Casio Exilim EX-Z77 and is cute as a button

speaking of buttons, there is a "Best Shot" button which allows you to select "scenes", which is where i discovered the flower mode!

here are some flower photos:

Pretty! Cute camera too. I'd love to get a new one.

It looks like you don't have the same torrential rain we have in Sydney. If I weent outside to take a pic I'd be up to my knees in water. My suburb is flooding!

hi Lara,
thanks for the vote of confidence!
i was impressed with the results out of such a little device . . . you can literally put it in your pocket!
how strange that Tazzy is the sunny spot today!

You wouldn't call it spring rain if you were here. It's torrential and today's maximum was only 13 degrees. We've gone right back to winter!

I'm off out in it in a minute, yuck, I want to be in your garden!

hi Cheryl,
haha yeah i should have said spring downpour!
when i lived on the north shore and got the train to uni i would often have to take my shoes off to walk home because the rain water poured down the street like a river . . . it was inonvenient but kind of fun!
although up to my knees is probably up to your waistline!

Nice shots!!!! It's so hard to take what seem like simple shots such as these! This kind of stuff can be faked but looking at shadows, depth, etc., I'm sure you didn't!!! Again, nice work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

hi James,
thanks for the kind words!
i dont really have any experience with photography so that was my humble amateur attempt . . . with all that encouragement i might go out and try some more!
so how do people "fake" nice photographs? do you mean with photoshop etc? im curious now . . .

Hey Morgan Bell, Photoshop make everything look a little better. I'm not sure that's cheating if you just change the contrast or brightness a little. You can take flowers inside and then you don't have to worry about the breeze and then you can also use a faked background for all the shots but if you have several like you have in your post people can easily figure it out because of the sameness and lack of depth and shadows.

hi James,
oh dear, that sounds like alot of trouble to go to!
i think im too lazy to fake shots, esp if the subject is just the poxy "weed" flowers and native shrubs out of my yard haha

Well, you do a better job than me when I try to be artistic. Mind you, my camera's screen is cracked so I can't see anything to take a photo. I just have to aim in the general direction. I'd be better off with an olden days camera, though maybe this little devil would be a good replacement?

hi Michaelie,
oh no, abroken screen? that must be annoying!
mine was a gift but im pretty sure they retail for around $150 . . . ive never owned a digital camera before but ive worked with many different ones in the office and this one is pretty user friendly in comparison . . . the zoom is fairly limited but for day to day happy snaps i think its pretty good quality and easy to operate

Very annoying, and the camera is not very old, yet it will cost more to fix the screen than to replace the stupid thing!

I need user friendly. I am a techno-no-hoper.

BTW, Happy Birthday for whenever it was!

hi everyone,
ive turned into a crazy person with the garden photography - theres a new set up HERE if you would like to see some more nature shots (my cat iota snuck into the background of one of them haha)

hi Michaelie,
thanks so much for the birthday wishes *hugs*, it was at the end of August and coincided with someone close to me coming through duty free at the airport, so TADA a user friendly camera for Morgan haha

Pretty photos and I'm a sucker for colourful cameras... I've got a little Olympus Mu, but I am tempted by the Exilim
