Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Great dinner-party list.
Who's saying, "grace"?
And the winner is...
God, the suspense.

Good morning, good morning.
Oh, yes, Christmas Party. Orble. Clever. Satan.

hi Norm,

you may know her from such films as Reality Bites, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Romy & Michelle's Highschool Reunion, Dogma, 200 Cigarettes, and Clay Pigeons

shes an activist and stand-up comedian . . . just like you

haha. she. just. like. me. haha.

You kidder.

200 cigarettes. That's a lot of smoke. I visited my dad last week. He shared a smoke with me. I didn't want to say anything. Too passive. Not to mention aggressive.

haha. she. like. me. haha.

Kidder.

It is interesting how the male list is so much longer than the female one..

hi Jason,

man, that would be a really cool song, a song i would buy!

hi Janet,

its probably even more disproportionate than my sample indicates

many of the men are scientists, sci-fi or horror writers or directors, and comedians

i guess over the years we have to acknowledge that some fields of education and some professions were largely boys clubs, and the more educated a person is (esp in a scientific field) the more likely they are to be an Atheist

many of the women are well known feminists, intellectuals, and unconventional types . . . we might just be looking at the thin end of the wedge because women are less likely to proclaim their Atheism for fear of appearing radical or it impacting on their career . . . or maybe female Atheists just do not succeed or achieve high levels of fame as frequently as their male counterparts?

is it fearing discrimination, or protecting reputations, or are there actually less female Atheists in the real world too?

maybe something i could look into in another post . . .

I don't know why - but the one that surprises me most is Lance Armstrong.

I love this Janeane Garofalo quote:
"Organized religions and their dogmas only serve to indoctrinate the participants into sheeplike common behaviors. This type of blind assimilation promotes the popularity of top-forty count down radio stations and movie sequels. Skepticism towards groups, holy or otherwise, is enriching and makes you a far more entertaning person"

I DO believe in God - or a supreme being of some sort - and in Jesus - but NOT in organized religion. That quote is perfect!

hi DeAnne,

actually i was a bit surprised by that one too

but heres a quote from UK Times Online:

His stance on religion is in marked contrast to his wife's ever more fervent Catholicism and the difference may have been one of the factors that led to their marriage breaking up. Armstrong believes it is possible to be a good person while not believing. "I think we all have obligations to be good, honest, hard-working, caring and compassionate," he says. "You have to try and it won't always be easy but you try your best. I do not believe that because you are not prepared to submit yourself to a god or a higher being, that when you get to the end of the road, you will be sent down. I'm not prepared to believe that."

There's a lot of talent in that list!

If I come to the Orble Christmas party, and they are there,I'll sit on the other side of Hugh Laurie and just incase you monopolize most of his time Morgan...I'll keep Jack Nicholson close by for some interesting conversation.

Ofcourse, chances of me being there are slim to none...so I'll have to settle for dreaming about it!

Interesting post Morgan. Once again you taught me something I didn't know.

It never occurred to me that there were so many religious people in the world!

And I think half of them are on this newtwork!

It never ceases to amaze me when I see people talking about God like he is a real person. Or Jesus like they knew him personally or something.

hi Waysouth,

yeah im exactly the same, i was raised as an Atheist, and at school none of the other kids were ever religious, well maybe one or two but they were always the "weird ones", the "churchies" . . . i thought it had been completely eradicated from our culture in Australia . . . until i joined Orble haha

hi Ruby,

the Australian contingent of this blogging network is disproportionately super-religious . . . sometimes i wonder if they do their primary recruiting at a Catholic nursing home or something

i think Richard Dawkins would refer to those people who claim to speak to god or jesus as "delusional" . . . im sure theres some psychological explanation for it, like mass hysteria, or pathological lying

Ya...Hugh Laurie....yummmmm!

On a completely different note...how's the healing coming? Has the pain subsided somewhat? That first week after re-injury is the worst...hope you're feeling better!
