The Bed - The Big Sleep

The Bed began as a personal play with scale. I remember as a child coming into my parents' bedroom and having the impression of their bed being much bigger than it actually was.
Here, it's a metaphor for a similar ongoing feeling, which everyone carries throughout their life, trying to figure how you feel and who you are and what your place is in relation to things that surround you.

Spanning over 8 metres, Will Ryman's The Bed is both a monumental sculpture and a stage, all made from papier mâché. On view from Jan 13, 2009 in the Saatchi Gallery's Project Room, Ryman's giant man reclines in a dreamy world, somewhere between Sunday morning lie-in bliss and nervous breakdown, basking in the clutter of indulgence.
An eye-catching giant papier-mache man lies dozing among a litter of empty beer cans, notebooks and half-eaten crisp packets.
New York-based playwright-turned sculptor Ryman, 39, is the son of acclaimed American minimalist painter Robert Ryman.
This is the first time that Ryman's work is being exhibited in the UK.

i love that. i always thought if the first house we lived in when we came to australia as been absolutely massive. we moved out of there when i was five and upon revisiting years later i was surprised to see that it was actually just an average sized three bedroom terrace in the inner city. i couldn't believe it was the same house. life is different when you are a child.

yeah ive been back to a couple of my childhood homes and my first thought was "wow, its so much smaller than i remember"
like the amount of paces to walk from one end of the room or yard seems only half as many . . . i guess our legs are longer!
