Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Gorgeous Baby Pygmy Hippo

November 7th 2008 09:13
Theres a new baby pygmy hippo at Taronga Zoo, Sydney . . . and she is gorgeous!

Her name is Monifa, she was born three weeks ago. She now weighs 6kg and is about the size of a small dog.

Monifa, meaning "I am lucky" in Nigerian, weighed in at 3.8 kilograms at birth on October 15.

Monifa is the first baby pygmy hippo born in the captivity of the zoo in 23 years. The pygmy hippo is endangered with only about 3,000 surviving in the wild of western Africa.

Apparently pygmy hippos are solitary animals so both of Monifa's parents live separately.

Isn't it amazing how babies, regardless of whichever animal they are, are just the cutest things ever?

I just want to give it a cuddle

I'm not a huge fan of zoos because I hate the thought of animals in captivity but understand their importance especially with breeding programs of endangered species. Plus I have to admit where else would I have had the opportunity to see snow leopards and a white lion? Even in the wild they are so very rare.

Thanks for the pics. Just lovely!

hi Cheryl,

yeah im a sucker for anything miniature!
i saw her on the news and just had to track down some pics!

i prefer zoos that are "open plains" and attempt to replicate the animals natural environment so they can live a semi-normal life . . . and like you said they need to breeding programs for endangered species

unfortunately with all the pollution and forest destruction and hunting etc little tykes like this dont get much of a fair go in their original habitat

thanks for the comment Cheryl!

You know Morgan, you should talk the K. Rudd about giving working class hippo families a "fair go"

hi alt_ed,
ewww what a spine-chilling photo!
i think baby spiders might be the exception to the cute miniature rule!
i like how anti-social the hippos parents are!

awwwwww Morgan, so cute. Aboslutely gorgeous, so sad to think of them as another deminishing species all due to bigger malls and super consumerism/profits... too bad that the arachnids may well amongst the only things to survive us all, I agree!

she is absolutely ADORABUBBLE!!!!

So, six kilos eh?

Well, my adorabubble pugface person is 8.5ks...she lost half a kilo recently, but put it back on when she got better.. been in the wars poor gurrrl.

Love hippoes, even though they kill (the big ones) more tourists than any other animal on earth!

The pygmy ones are sooo must take home... until they open the 'flood gates' and spray your entire home with green diarrhoea... I wrote about that once, when having my 9th birthday party at the zoo... poor prissy pain in the neck girl got her prissy white pettycoats covered in green poohsie whopsoes! From an adorable pygmy hippo mother..HA!

Oh, by the way, they do stay with their mothers until they stop suckling. And the spider photo is funny, and we thought our Huntsmen were large!

cheers

Um seriously what's the deal with all the baby spiders? Is that photoshop? Why would there be so many spiders congregated in one place just when there happened to be a camera present? That's the most hideous thing I have ever seen.

The hippo looks kinda creepy too. So shiny and squeaky.

Comment by Morgan Bell

November 8th 2008 12:52
hi Ruby,
you want to kill it dont you!
you have an overwhelming urge to kill every baby you see!
the hippo has a bit of a slimy look cos the zoo people kept dunking her in a bucket of water!

Oh, nothing like baby pictures to start the morning right!

Why would there be so many spiders congregated in one place just when there happened to be a camera present?

I think they are congregated by that disgusting white webby in the corner, that they probably recently climbed out of. And maybe the camera just happened to be there, but I think it was more one of those, "Get the camera!" moments.

Or photoshop

hi Waysouth,
haha a baby hippo a day keeps the doctor away!
it seems their species are dying out so these baby photo-ops are considered quite rare!
thanks for stopping in!

"Look, some cute deadly baby spiders..."

Are those deadly? What kind are they? Are you in Australia, where everything is deadly?

hi Suzanne,
i think it looks like a huntsman spider, in which case no they are not deadly!
maybe we should confirm with the lad who posted it: alt_ed what kind of spiders are they?

hi Atula,
she certainly would make an adorable mascot!
hopefully it creates a bit of interest in conservation!
thanks for stopping in!
