when the playing field is so uneven hard work pretty much gets you nowhere - only friends in high places, favours, and corruption will!

Great observation by Ruby as well. We Americans are taught from a young age that if you don't get what you want, you didn't work hard enough for it. Even though statistics show that Countries that give more benefits to workers actually have HIGHER productivity than we do in the U.S. Not to mention lower suicide rates.

Screen Fanatic
I like Van Sant as a director even though there are a couple of his films that I can't stand, like Good Will Hunting and, in particular, Elephant which absolutely bored me to tears with its pointless tedium.
I think his early work was fantastic, especially Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho. Against all expectations I actually didn't mind his shot-for-shot remake of Psycho either even if it was ultimately superflous in a way. I like Gerry too, though I'm sure most people fall asleep during that one!

i think Nicole Kidman in real life would be exactly like her character in The Others, cold and neurotic
