Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Hot In Bed

March 24th 2009 13:54
Im a winter baby. I dont like the summer because I get too hot.

After a lengthy stint in Tasmania, I am now trying to climatise back to Sydney weather and Im getting a little hot under the collar.

My hair is frizzy as a perm in the humid conditions. No amount of GHD hair straightening can battle the moist sticky atmosphere. I never noticed any humidity in Tasmania, but Sydney the days make me feel like a specimen suspended in goo and pressed between two glass plates under the glaring light of a microscope.

To call it "soupy" is an understatement.

I long for the crispness of some air-conditioning.

So how do you sleep in soup?

How do you sleep in solar goo?

Ive been sleeping on top of the covers under an open window. Its the best I can come up with. However every day when I get up and look in the mirror I see how curled my hair has become due to the perspiration of sleep. My head mashed into the pillow, steaming up my hair follicles.

In a cooler climate I could wash and blowdry my hair once and it would be presentable for two or three days. In Sydney, forget about it - hair styling is a daily task.

By the time I finish straightening or blow drying one side of my head, the first half springs back into frizz and curls again. Its a bit like painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the task can never be completed.

One day a cool breeze will blow in and I will be overjoyed. I will get my hair just right. I will refuse to go to bed for fear of messing it up. I will look immaculate but be very very tired.

I have never lived in Tasie. I am a Sydney girl. I prefer the heat to the cold. However, too hot can really be too hot for me. I hate sweating and my makeup weltering and turning out to just being a monster sweatng.

I wouldn't swap it for Tasmania though.

And here I was just thinking how glorious the weather has been here in Sydney! i love the heat. not only that i love the humidity.though i know what you mean about the frizz.

hi Janet,
oh the makeup, theres another issue with the heat!
it welters off IF YOU CAN GET IT ON IN THE FIRST PLACE! haha
i wish i could have my Sydney social life with the Tasmanian weather, although if we could elect the temperature im sure i would be outvoted!

hi Ruby,
i notice at night everybody else goes and puts on a cardigan or a jacket, meanwhile im thinking "oh thank god its finally got to a reasonable temperature" lol
i put on a bit of weight in Tazzy that im trying to lose, maybe that will make a difference, once i reduce my insulation layers!

My goodness dear you look positively boobalicious in that pic! I know what you mean about the humidity though, it's driving me bonkers.

I've never been a winter person, I hate the cold and when I was in Tassie I thought I'd never be warm again but I'm actually starting to dream of cooler nights. I've had to have a fan on for the last week just to sleep. I'm sure I'll complain like hell when the cold hits but give me a night where I need my trakkie daks and a sweater pleeeeeeze!

hi Cheryl,
and there i was thinking i photoshopped that pic beyond recognition . . . you can spot my boobs at ten thousand paces! haha
the noise of a fan can be quite soothing to help you drop off to sleep, a gentle hum, or rattle or tick to lull you into the land of nod!
i think my next apartment will have to be the cool room at a bottle-o

Honestly, Morgan. I used to love summertime during childhood, as I don't need to go to school and can play all day long with the sandcastle...

However, after I grown up, I started to hate summer, due to the excessively hot weather!

hi Wilson,
yeah i never used to notice the heat as much when i was young either
i guess you could go run under the sprinkler or go for a swim or lie under the shade of a tree . . . we dont seem to do those things as much as adults

hi Chris,
i should be some sort of diva so i could get my assistants to fan me while i sleep!
you never see a frizzy diva do you?
(well not since the 80s lol)

Won't be long to winter. I totally hate the hot weather but I never noticed it this summer. Half my place is semi underground and I work in A/C all day. And I totally want to retire in Jindabyne or Queenstown.

hi Jason,
bring it on!
yeah i remember the days of working in an air-conditioned office through the hottest part of the day and commuting in an air-conditioned car or train . . . yes my own personal train! haha
i long to wear a scarf and a double-breasted jacket!

Great title -- great graphic!

The picture makes one think of assfixiation{sic} from the heat! lol

Actually, I admire the selections and commend you on developing your readership through wit and design.

Stay cool down there -- in Australia, that is.

hi Edward,
thanks for the nice positive comment
it is appreciated
i believe the spelling is "asphyxiation", you mean being suffocated or deprived of oxygen right?
i will try to stay cool, im just incredibly hot-blooded
it has been a pleasure having you visit my blog, stop by any time!

Comment by Edward Allen

March 24th 2009 20:19
That is the proper spelling, but if I had spelled it that way it would not have been associated with the graphic and deprived the readers of the obvious double-entendre.
Of course you know this is why I used the [sic] to point out the recognized misspelling.

Oh! Since we are into English lessons--and it is appreciated--in the U.S., as opposed to England and Australia, the periods and commas should always be inside quotes. I suppose our editors think it is more tidy.

Thanks for the definition and the welcome to your website. I enjoy reading it.

Hot damn, you do look hot in bed. Can I get you a fan? I sweat profusely in bed during the warmer months, it's not pleasant at all, I sympathize. But I sweat regardless, I'm just a hot guy, what can I do? LOL

I must say - and I'll admit, I have a dirty mind - but when I first saw your pic as a thumbnail I didn't see the edge of your face and the pic looked to me like the long black hair of the back of a woman's head and in the foreground her skirt had been hitched up over her naked ass! Can you see what I saw?!

Have to admit - I'm a summer baby - so I don't mind the heat though life in the far north of the tropics on a year round basis may be a little too much.

Hawaii - might be a nice compromise though.

That said, as I get older I'm finding that cool crisp mornings have a certain appeal.

I can see an attractiveness to winter - but given I've never been one to either laze in bed nor recline and appreciate the beauty of downey winter drizzle - the environs of Tassie may be a little alien - albeit beautiful.

hi Edward,
sorry, i wasnt trying to be the spelling police haha
but that is actually interesting about the comma being inside speech marks, i didnt realise there were two different rules . . . thanks for the tip!

hi Raoul,
i must remember that people who sweat are simply HOT!
and yes i can see what youve described, how very strange, i didnt notice until you pointed it out, but when its a thumbnail i think it can easily fit your interpretation

hi MNG,
well im a night owl, and i think its partially due to the comfotable night temperatures
i can appreciate a mild breezy day, but sometimes i wonder if i would be better suited to the UK or Canada or somewhere a bit more brisk and overcast

Lol.

Apparently humidity is good for your skin, at least in very hot climates where you sweat a lot, therefore dirt does not stay on your face for long. Or something.

I have never stayed in a cold climate long enough to notice differences to my hair, interestingly enough!

I am also one of those Sydneysiders who enjoys the weather as it is (most of the time), sorry!

P.S. "Hot in bed' should do wonders for your traffic.

hi PoMo,
ive got naturally oily skin, so being in a cold climate like Tazzy actually dried my skin out and made it feel cleaner
although ive heard people with oily skin get less wrinkles?
i was having a shower the other day and thought gee i havent blogged about my hair for awhile . . . now whats an eye-catching title for such a boring topic?
lol
have you been around any cold Eupopean countries? or do you only holiday in their summer?

It makes sense if people oily skin get less wrinkles... I have sensitive/combination skin.

Well done on the title, I actually go to Europe in the winter most of the time, and I've been to Shanghai and Canada in the winter as well, and I noticed that the air felt different to breathe and I felt fresher, but I didn't notice what effect it may have had on my hair... interesting the things ppl focus on, isn't it?

hi PoMo,
yep im hair obsessed!
imagine the things i could achieve if i just shaved it all off . . .
i often fixate on small detail rather than taking in the big picture . . . i cant remember if that is a typically male or female trait . . . its probably a mental condition like OCD

Some questions, Morgan:
Are you inviting your viewers to view you in a sexual context through your pic (which seems to have nothing to do with the post), and how would you feel when they indicate they do?
What does 'sex is power' mean to you, as an asexual? Are you playing by the rules of our sex-obsessed society, or merely beating it at its own game?

Ah, I've found Sydney's humidity to be a breath of fresh air when compared to the humidity in Brisbane. As a relatively new Sydney-sider, my hair has never been more cooperative. Gone is the frizz inspired by Brisbane heat that no amount of taming can de-frizz, and I have welcomed the ability to keep my curly/wavy hair in order!

I am definitely a winter person though too, I hate getting too hot. Not to worry though, we are coming into winter so hopefully your hair will cooperate too with the colder temperatures.

hi PoMo,
i dont think sex is power, i think confidence is power!
or maybe some combination of people skills, knowledge, and communication?
if Cheryl had not pointed it out i would not expect anyone to recognise the pic as me
to me its just a picture, a heavily distorted pic in which i happen to be the model
the image was more accessible than trawling through google images for an overheated woman on a bed, which i do think is related to the theme of the text, perhaps loosely, but what the hey
i think it represents the lethargy and restlessless associated with searing temperatures
i realise some people will only see cleavage and associate that directly with sex, and my feelings about that are just apathy
i dont think the human form is inherantly sexual

hi candygurl,
maybe the oily skin is a good investment?
we will be the beauty queens of the nursing home!
i wonder if unruly hair is some kind of a punishment for something we did wrong in another life?
thanks for the comment

hi sam sall,
oh good, im not alone in my dislike of summer!
we are peas in a pod . . . frozen peas! haha
long live air-conditioning!

hi skoop,
you actually posted that comment 7 times, so i deleted the excess 6 copies . . .
gee a muggy Hong Kong day sounds like my idea of hell!

excellent, another winter baby!
i think i would melt in Brisbane!

I am a summer baby- there was heatwave of 106 degrees when I was born. My mom said she had to keep the fan blowing directly on me or I'd scream my head off! Now that I'm older I definitely like the cooler seasons, but with spring comes allergies, and that is NO fun. Spring has just started in the US, so I'm looking forward to some sniffly months coming up. Bleh.

hi Kristin,
oooo thats 41 degrees celcius . . . nasty!
this summer we had temps up to 46 degrees celcius (115 farenheit) in Victoria, which contributed to the bushfires sparking off
i think as we get older we prefer milder weather
thanks for the comment
