Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

I am a 4th Cousin Once Removed of Barack Hussein Obama

April 1st 2009 17:45
Obama bubblegum

Barack Hussein Obama is descended from a long line of bubblegum chewers. Thinking back to my own love of bubblegum, I should have known we were related.

If we trace back through the Dunham family tree, beginning with Ann Dunham, Barack's mother, we can see a common lineage with the ancestors of the Bell family.

I went all day without being sucked into any April Fools Day pranks. When YouTube videos were being displayed upside down I cottoned on straight away, thinking "oh that will be an April Fools gag". A particularly vain friend of mine announced they had shaved their head and it was obvious it was just a prank.

But when a Family Tree application on Facebook sent me a notification saying I was related to Obama, I thought "oh really, thats interesting, I wonder which branch links us?"

D'oh!

Well it didnt seem impossible . . .

I totally got punked!

Heres the graphic of the ficticious tree:

Hehehe, that's brilliant. Haven't had any April Fool's stuff today. Not even something telling me I'm a monkey's uncle.

The "once removed" usually means you are from a different generation such as you are cousins with the parents or cousins with the kids. I only know this because I did a post a few months back and my research took me there. Gets a bit confusing when you put "4th cousin into it though!

I had always wondered what the "first removed" actually meant before that.

Sounds like this prank got you going for a minute there?

hi Spike,
you couldnt say that on a cricket pitch

hi Janet,
yeah i remember your post actually
i think the family tree graphic was indicating Obama was cousins with my mum or something
this prank totally had me going!

Well hello cousin! I got exactly the same email (with my photo in the fictitious tree, of course).

I was very suspicious straight away as I already know my family tree and the great-grandparents just didn't look familiar.

You're kidding me!

How could you get sucked in like that.

Afterall, I'm his brother apparently - and I don't recall us ever meeting.

Well I'm upset. I received no emails on April Fools Day telling me I was related to anyone even slightly famous. Even though it would have been fake, at least I could have pretend for a little bit!

The only April Fools Day joke played on me was my two sons said "We don't love you anymore" as I dropped them off at school. Said, mind you, with huge grins on their faces. I don't think they actually even wanted to trick me, it was just the best April Fools joke they could think of at the time.

Haha- no one got me yesterday, thank god as I am so gullible. My family tree goes back somehow to Anastasia - I probably have about two drops of her blood in me but somehow we are related. My granny is Russian and Gramps is Polish so it stems from them.

Dang, it would have been a nice thought for a while...

I looove Obama...

I got fooled by this blogger who I am following on twitter who pretended to abandon his project of traveling all around the world, since he had come to the conclusion that he really hated every part of the world which was not American. I guess it was a bit overdone, but I didn't know him well enough to realise it was a joke, hehehe. Then I read the comments and it all got put into context.

hi Jason, i always knew you were a princes . . .

hi PoMo,
i wouldnt expect a world traveller to choose america as their ultimate country . . . although stranger things have happened!

hi Peter Yang,
thanks for the comment buddy!

hi Ruby,
haha yeah ive noticed the capitalising of HUSSEIN has died off ever since he won the election, i guess its only fun to imply someone is a terrorist on the campaign trail?

hi alt_ed,
you pick up on every subtlety!

Well, actually... If I were free to live anywhere in the world, I would choose San Francisco! (Though since I haven't been to Africa, Latin America or Antarctica I don't know if I qualify for the title of 'World Traveller'.)

I heard on the grapevine that you were an ugly bitch. That doesn't surprise me. You have an ugly soul.

David is there any reason you've written about Morgan's looks in past tense? Are you suggesting that perhaps, unlike yourself, she's grown more attractive with age?

Comment by Morgan Bell

hi David,
wouldnt you require a group of friends to be able to hear things on a grapevine?
i thought you were leaving the orble network?
well hurry and and pack your bags and fuck off, youre sounding like a broken record or a poisoned fly in its last throws or death . . . you are an annoying juvenile jealous pest . . . buzz, buzz, crackle, crackle *groan*
ps: i dont believe in souls, so that was a fairly impotent insult

hi alt_ed,
you know, in contrast with David, you seem like a mature considerate well-spoken young man . . . and thats saying something!
and they say it is the younger generation that is disrespectful . . . i guess those people havent seen the behaviour of some of orbles oldies, well one in particular . . .

I appear to have missed a lot around here...

Morgan, I am terrifed every April 1st, to the point where I would prefer to stay home hermit like until noon.

But I can't believe you fell for this, even a bit - you duffer!
