i love it when people use my full name
March 21st 2008 05:09
i know it it just courtesy to write a fellow bloggers user name as displayed when responding to comments but there is just something about it which makes me feel special . . . like a B-grade celebrity who everyone knows their name . . . its kind of like getting your name called out at school assembly for some merit award or prize!
in sydney i rarely knew any of my friends surnames unless they were people i had been to school with. i knew peoples mobile numbers and workplaces and how to get to their apartments by foot but long gone is the days of recording a friends full name and address in a filofax or address book. some people in sydney i didnt even know their REAL names, just a nickname or a drag persona. i knew their faces, and even then i had terrible face recognition skills.
with the rise in popularity of facebook i was suddenly getting friends requests from people with full (and real) names and i still routinely go "who?!" and have to examine pics or mutual friends to deduce "ohhhhh james mcgregor is tall jimmy" or "get out! jules is really called joel gardner?" haha
*names changed to protect the identity of trashbags on oxford st
anyway i like the novelty of people on Orble saying "excellent point Morgan Bell, but have you ever considered . . ." or "thanks for stopping by Morgan Bell . . ."
yeah small things amuse small minds
having "Morgan" for a first name has been a blessing and a curse in this life . . . a blessing in that it is distinctive and easy to spell and people tend to remember me and not confuse me for anyone else . . . a curse with paperwork, speaking to call centres, leaving messages, applying for work etc.
"Ok so whats your name?"
"Morgan Bell"
"uhh . . . so Bell Morgan"
"yes but Bell is my surname"
"so Bell-Morgan is your surname? so what is your first name"
"Morgan is my first name, my name is Morgan Bell"
"uhh . . . so wha . . . Morgan is wha? uhh . . ."
"Morgan is my FIRST name"
"oh ok so Morgan Bell"
"yes thats what i said"
like really, "Bell" isnt exactly a common first name is it? i guess theres Belle from Beauty and the Beast but i think in Australia in this day and age theres probably not that many of them to warrant such confusion lol
and in job interviews the look of disappointment when they look up from your printed resume which says "Ms Morgan Bell", clearly mistaking the Ms as a Mr or dismissing it as a typo or just not reading my title at all because the name "Morgan" is sitting next to it and they expect the person walking into the interview room to be some exciting young man. i worked in engineering for a long time and no manager on an interview panel could ever disguise their disappointment at seeing a woman walking in the door when they were expecting a "Morgan" . . . im sure Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Daryl Hannah have the same problem haha
the first time i saw somebody address me with my full name on Orble i got a bit worried and thought oh maybe i should change that to protect my privacy etc etc but really ive got nothing to say on here that i wouldnt say to a persons face or wouldnt be proud to have published in a magazine . . . wheres the fun in being anonymous? wheres the integrity? i am going to embrace me name! how else will i experience that feeling that every B-grade celebrity writer strives for?

I get Tiffany, Stephanie, E-Tiffany (I mean how hard do you have to want my name to sound like Tiffany?!?), Epithany and a whole range of other interpretations. On the Queer edition of Honi Soit, U Sydney's student newspaper, my name was spelled "Epiphone"!
Luckily the people who *have* heard of the word epiphany tend to pay me compliments on it, so that makes up for it!
Oh yeah, and apparently my name has exciting connotations for readers of James Joyce's Ulysses... ! Which I'll never know about, because I have no intention of reading that book! Hehe.

I've been going over names and finally found one I will like being called when I'm old and wrinkly.
Abigail
Nice ring to it.
Thanks for the post, Morgan Bell. Interesting read.

yeah its tough when theres a prominent celebrity sharing your name (or a version of it), i know a couple of Avril who find Ms Lavigne quite bothersome!
ive got Morgan Freeman and Morgan Fairchild to contend with!
i guess Tiffany and Britney sound a bit like playboy bunny names but i think you can bring respect to them based on your personality!
(it could be worse, you could be Amber or Buffy or Candy haha)
names go in and out of fashion, if you wait it out all the playboy bunnies and popstars will be called Gertrude and Miriam
