Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

if my parents were on TV . . .

September 8th 2008 08:47
i have compiled a short-list of TV parents that are quite possibly based on the behaviour of my parents:

3rd PLACE
Parents: Frank & Marie Barone
TV Show: Everybody Loves Raymond
Character Traits: affectionately putting each other down and claiming not to be happy, the mum cooks and the dad criticises

Frank & Marie Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond (TV parents)

2nd PLACE
Parents: Red & Kitty Forman
TV Show: That 70s Show
Character Traits: traditional values, super-sweet mum and surly dad

Red & Kitty Forman from That 70s Show (TV parents)

and the winner is . . . .

*drum roll*

1st PLACE
Parents: Estelle & Frank Costanza
TV Show: Seinfeld
Character Traits: high stress increasing volume arguments about seemingly trivial subjects, the mum and dad display equal levels of insanity

Estelle & Frank Costanza from Seinfeld (Georges TV parents)

which TV parents remind you of your oldies?

Hi Morgan,

Well, my parents were divorced while I was very young. So I would go with some single mom, but I can't really think of one that was very similar to mine. Granted my mom would probably make a great TV Sit-Com character, but I just don't think she is out there quite yet. Although, parts of Kitty Foreman do come very close.

Now TV parents I might have liked to have. . .

Philip & Vivian Banks - The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Judge Harold T. Stone - Night Court (He tried adopting orphan Leon. He would have been a good dad I think.)

Tom Poston and Betty White as Kitty Foreman's parents - That '70s Show (Only because I love both of them, and think it'd be cool to have them as parents.)

Um ...

Mallory's parents from Natural Born Killers ...

I'm sure you'll know what I mean ... most people won't get it ... but that's okay ... who does get it any more ?

it's why we're all on the net I guess. We never get it ...

I'm starting to rave again. I'd better go. Nice to see you're still posting some really interesting shit ... I might inhabit this microcosm world again soon .. depends ... not sure ... um .. better go

Kitty is pretty cool hey, a bit naive but a very solid hairdo!
single mums hmmm im thinking Gilmore Girls, Grace Under Fire, The New Adventures Of Old Christine, Once & Again, Jesse . . . i could probably think much more in film

As my dad died when I was a kid and my mum raised us and she is one tiny but strong woman, I would have to say a mix between Maxine from Judging Amy but with better make-up, Grace from Grace Under Fire but without the prior alcoholism and Jill Taylor from Home Improvement but without the useless DIY husband.

She can do a full grease and oil change on a car, fix plumbing, build stuff...all of the things I'm hopeless at. It was not unusual for me to come home from school to have one of the neighbours say "hey Cheryl, I see your mums up fixing the roof again". She is possibly the only mum in history that asks for things like angle grinders and power drills for her birthday! Oh and she LOVES horror movies. No wonder I'm so twisted Love ya mum!

hi David,
you are perhaps even more enigmatic than Peter Yang!
i think poor old Mallory was molested and abused by her dad . . . interesting choice!
welcome back to the microcosm!

I thought of some of those Morgan. They just don't fit.

I did however realize right after posting I should have mentioned Stephen and Elise Keaton from Family Ties.

hi Gene,
oh the Family Ties mum and dad, the ultimate hippy parents, so relaxed and fair-minded and caring and sharing . . . great fantasy parents . . . the complete opposite of the highly strung Costanzas haha

Good grief, just to prove my point I just spoke with mum who said her back was really hurting. I asked what was wrong and she said, "Oh I don't know, maybe I pulled something when I climbed the fence to help the neighbour's dog". She's 71!!!

I couldn't climb a fence if my life depended on it.

Hi Morgan,

*LOL* Classic! What a great post, too bad I have no answer ... Gosh what a question!

...um ... let's start with back then... um ... perhaps Kramer Vs Kramer.

Later (whilst living with Dad because mum's whereabouts were not available)... um ... like the father of Kirsten Dunst in Spiderman, or the Dad in Jumper, or Scar in Lion King, perhaps the green Goblin himself (Spiderman).

After that, it was Step Up 2, I got right out of the way for a while, then ... um ... not sure there is a film for that one yet although Mommy Dearest comes to mind?

Will have to have a long hard think and come back ...

great post!

Lilla ...

hi Lilla,
thanks for all the good vibes!

like the father of Kirsten Dunst in Spiderman, or the Dad in Jumper

were these really small roles?
i dont remember these people at all!
(perhaps that was your intention haha)
sounds like you had the kind of childhood that would make a bestseller memoir!

Morgan,

You may be right about the bestseller, Im gathering notes and only time will tell.

Yes small roles, but there all the same, making up for quantity by the sheer intensity of their being there at all.

The most obvious thing to me is the joy int he fact that we are not our parents and do not have to become what we despise, but its not always easy to forgive ourselves for not walking away earlier than we did, in order to avoid their toxic abuse, making excuses for their bad behaviour, never once realising that we did not have to take it as part of the bargain.

Unfortunately, mine are both dead to me now, until they can become aware that I am a sentient being .. you think that would be an easy ask, wouldnt you?

It all reminds me of this Mobile home I saw on Sunday that had the addage : "ADVENTURE BEFORE DEMENTIA written across the top of it in blazing big blue letters!

HA HA haha I love it.

Glad you are well.

Lilla ...

hi Janet,
maybe we are related? haha
the Barones were pretty close but my mums not quite as interfering (shes a fab cook though) - the Costanzas are just such a familiar dynamic!
thanks for stopping in and leaving a comment!
