Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

im in love with a digital terrestrial

June 20th 2008 17:27
i have officially entered the digital age of television!

in my little pocket of Tasmania we only have two commerial stations plus the ABC and SBS, there is a third channel available only if you have digital TV . . . and, drum roll please, today i got a digital set top box!

now i bet you thought i was going to declare i got some beautiful plasma, LCD, flatscreen, widescreen, top-of-the-range, do-your-laundry-for-you, cutting edge new TV right?

well we have to remember i live in a very frugal house-hold where we budget and count our pennies . . . and by we i mean my parents, left to my own accord i am the most wasteful extravagent person in the world, but in this humble home the bargain police are conditioning me to appreciate their shoe-string-budget ways . . . apparently its all about making those ends meet!

anyway, i dont really care, the set top box is a million times better than what i had before

i got to watch Big Brother tonight (a show previously unavailable to me) and discovered a boy with a very squeeky voice . . . this is essential mainland pop culture viewing which i was sadly missing out on, but not anymore!

when i lived in Sydney i had a staple TV diet of all thing Channel Ten and i suffered some kind of geographic shock when i could no longer watch House, or Ready Steady Cook, or Rove, or Oprah, or Letterman . . . and did i mention Big Brother? haha

so i am now the proud and satisfied owner of a Healing (maybe not the most well known brand lol) Digital Terrestrial Television Receiver . . . i dont know if im more impressed with the title or the crystal clear and extensive viewing it provides?

yes im very very easily impressed!

Congratulations Morgan! I felt the same way when we first got cable TV! It doesn't take much to please some of us, does it? LOL

hi S.L.
haha sometimes its those simple pleasures that are the best, you can appreciate the little things you take for granted if they are suddenly not available to you!

I could never afford cable but my plasma and digital set top box are amazing. Morgan - all you need now is a High Def TV and you get even more channels out of the set top box. Channel 10 even has a second channel and Thursday nights is sci fi night. LOL. I get SO excited. Welcome to the future.

Just don't forget to wear a tinfoil hat so that the 'beams' don't get to your brain

I'm saving very very slowly for an LCD TV. at this rate I should be able to get it in September 2076!

it seems like everyone else got digital TV a year ago . . . in 2076 im going to envy you because i probably still wont have an LCD screen . . . movie night at Cheryls house in the far distant future!

Absolutely, I'll even make popcorn in my very outdated microwave which will have been replaced by something far more whiz bang with laser beams that I still can't afford!

I thought I was the only person in the world who watched ready steady cook...or who was at least willing to admit to it.

Hey speaking of TV and lasers, I thought about buying a new TV but also wanted to get the hair on my legs and bikini line lasered. Hard decision but opted for the laser. Best thing I ever did. Do you know how good it feels knowing you never have to shave again?

God, I've gotten this rather off track haven't I?

hey Ruby,
lasers are the way of the future!
is laser hair removal really as cheap as a TV? i thought it was like hundreds of thousands of dollars . . . i could be lasering my whole body instead of watching Ready Steady Cook
ps: the host of Ready Steady Cook used to come out on Oxford St occassionally so that is one of my small celebrity sightings

hundreds of thousands? God no. Actually it is usually a few thousands but I got IPL (intense pulsed light), which is not exactly laser but very similar. I started the treatment last winter when the salon had a special, $400 for both legs plus the bikini line and underarms thrown in free. Some people need more treatments than others. I've had four and will have one more in about a month to clean up a few patches that insist on coming back. But that should be my last. So it'll cost me a total of $2000 over a period of 14 months. Not bad.

But yeah, it is usually more expensive than that.

Lol at the 'do-your-laundry-for-you' TV! I think I could survive anywhere if I had access to cable and the internet!

And yay for Rove! Although I have to admit that I was kind of put off by his 'now you see it, now you don't' approach to his sexuality (in regards to homosexuality) a while back.

haha
yes epiphanie
this is how exciting my life really is when im finding an extra TV station really life changing lol
oh do fill me in on Rove, i havent heard anything official on his sexuality other than his marriage to Belinda Emmet of course . . . and the segment on his show "who would you turn gay for?"

Comment by postmoderncritic

July 5th 2008 06:31
I think Rove has always portrayed himself as 'open to possibilities', but a few years ago he was taking turns advertising male crushes and what not and then acting slightly hysterical and possessive over the topic whenever homosexuality was mentioned. He even phased Carson Kressley a bit in an interview when talking about gay issues. I looked for it on YouTube, but to no avail. But then, I'm very sensitive to internalised homophobia, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people missed it altogether and figured that 'he was brave enough to go there, so he can't have anything to worry about'.

Oh, and I *love* the 'Who would you turn gay for?' Q, it's one of the major reasons I watch the show, lol.
