is Sam Newman worthy of coming on?
August 1st 2008 07:18
ah Sam, hes done it again!
and no amount of back-peddling can disguise his meaning!
Sam Newman asked Gary Lyon is they could get the female representative (Paula Wriedt) for the proposed Tasmanian AFL team to come on the show, then as everyone began to speak he said under his breath "worthy of coming on her"
Sam immediately claimed he "did not mean it that way"
he added a couple of words, changed the inflection, added a pause, and gave the phrase a whole new meaning "she is worthy of coming on, her"
if you listen to the video he clearly did not say "she is" or pause before "her" the first time her made the remark
Paula Wriedt is the Tasmanian Minister for Economic Development and Tourism and deserves a little bit of respect when agreeing to provide statements for use in the media
i dont think what Sam said was offensive towards all women, i think it was offensive to this one particular women, Paula, who has said in interviews today that she did find it offensive and was humilated wondering what her parents would think when they heard it
Sam has apologised, and Paula Wriedt has accepted the apology, but she has made clear that Sam was sticking by his story of being "taken out of context" with his comments when offering the apology . . . it kind of takes the value out of the apology if you dont even acknowledge what you said
i dont think it matters that Paula is a woman, the comment would have been equally as dubious if directed at a man . . . its basically just the high-school gag of turning an ordinary phrase into sexual innuendo, if you were socialising with friends and someone said something like that you would probably groan with how lame it is and roll your eyes
it seems like Sam expects Ms Wriedt to believe that the start of his remark was inaudible . . . well if his microphone really was turned off for the words "she is" then perhaps the producers should take a little responsibility
i think Sam wasnt really expecting the other panelists to highlight his childish remark and rather than owning up to it and acknowledge he was being silly, he is now insulting everyones intelligence by persisting with a lie
note to media personalities: you cannot backpeddle once your words have been recorded!
to read what i thought of Sam's last bout of idiocy "attack dogs, loose cannons, and scapegoats"
and no amount of back-peddling can disguise his meaning!

Ok. I don't want to play crazy feminist here, but his remark does kind of demean all women. Firstly, he would not have made such a crude remark regarding a male politician. Secondly his statement alludes to a view whereby there are two types of women, those you f$%& and those you don't touch with a ten foot barge pole..
Clearly, Paula passes the test since she would deign to come all over her. Lucky girl. She really should be thrilled. No sorry, when even a successful politician is the butt of such crude and offensive locker room humour then it is yet another indicator of the low esteem in which women are still held.

yeah i do take your point, there is a history of statements like this lodged at women publicly, and in this case the whole audience cheered and clapped at the crassness, clearly understanding the intended double meaning
i know plenty of people that make jokes like that at cocktail parties etc but its a bit different to saying it about someone you dont know on public television . . . i dont think it was appropriate
im surprised at Channel 9 issuing statements supporting Sam's "out of context" argument . . . how stupid do they think everyone is?

I read you other post too and agree about producers and personalities etc.
I used to watch the Footy Show years ago and I remember Sam being 'bad' but not as bad as he is today. I wonder whether TV execs knew exactly what they had on their hands or did his 'tv persona' just evolve organically and the tv execs then took advantage of it and cultivated it.
I agree with you, there is no back peddling especially when we all know that Sam is sexist.
And to be frank, I find it insulting that people are trying tell me that I in fact didn't hear what I thought I heard.
Here's a quote from an article on smh.
"There was never any intention to insult Paula Wriedt, and any suggestion to the contrary is grossly unfair," Mr Cleary said in a statement.
"Sam Newman was simply suggesting Ms Wriedt should be a guest on the program given the news of Tasmania's backing.
"Sam qualified this moments later when he realised he'd been taken out of context.
"Sam is horrified at suggestions he made a lewd remark about Ms Wriedt, and phoned her to clarify his comment."
The incident also drew support from AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, who said he had watched the show and believed Newman had made an honest slip.
"I think it was a slip, I understood what he said, I didn't take the double meaning in it, I understand why people might," he told Fairfax Radio Network today.
"I know James Brayshaw did and he took it up with Sam.
"I'm starting to really in some ways sort of question if everything Sam said is going to be scrutinised and analysed, I think we are going to start becoming terribly unfair.
"He went out of his way to say that he didn't say that and I think you've got to take him on face value."
Grossly unfair? Please!
Love & stuff

thanks for providing those quotes
i think Channel 9 has totally cultivated Sam!
i think reports saying he is "mortified" to be taken out of context are more offensive than what he originally said!

I'm no prude and I will laugh at a crude joke at the pub but this was a derogatory statement about someone who did nothing to deserve it...and all on TV. I'm surprised he hasn't pulled a groin with all of that flailing and back peddling.

yeah the back-peddling is embarrassing!
i think he has a pretty juveline sense of humour!
i just cant believe he wont admit his joke was silly and apologise for speaking without thinking . . . the apology seems pretty hollow if he wont even admit the "humorous" intentions of his words
ask Mrs M kindly provided the words of the Channel 9 exec . . . they are just encouraging him to be an idiot and not accountable for his bad taste
i like your description of him looking up girls skirts, i guess some boys never grow up!

hes one of the old dinosaurs who never got the memo that women should be respected just as much as men . . . i find it hard to believe that the TV execs cant educate him on what is acceptable

Sometimes my advice to me even works. It's been weeks since I wanted to kill another driver ...
Now everybody take a deep breath and repeat after me: Sam Newman is just another bad driver on the highway of life. He can only hurt you if you let him. Say it again: Sam Newman is ...
Ggggrrrr, arrrggghhhhh ... quick, someone hold me back ...

great analogy!
awesome rant!
its not Sam Newman the man that ruffles my feathers, its Sam Newman the industry, where a team of "respectable" sporting and media bigwigs are complicit in his stupidity
if you had a naughty kid who swore at your neighbour would you encourage him to say "sorry for swearing" or "sorry but you heard me wrong"?
thanks for the comment!

yeah i think the round of applause shows the attitude is widely accepted . . . Sam Newman is well-known as a sexist buffoon in Australia, but (sadly) he is representative of a certain section of our community

im sure he has the capacity to just give his footy tips and read out some fan-mail for the majority of the time, but for some reason lately he keeps stooping to the really low-brow humour

That man needs to take a good long hard look at himself in the mirror. Maybe he would see himself for the misogynistic idiot that the rest of us can see. I hope he feels thoroughly ashamed of himself but I doubt it.

thankyou for the update . . . that is terrible news
i had heard Paula was in hospital from an "unknown medical condition" but i was not aware it was a suicide attempt
im sure all the recent media attention would not have helped if she was suffering from depression, im sure she has felt very heavily scrutinised and hounded over the whole issue
