Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

ive got Helena Bonham Carter hair!

July 5th 2008 16:14
i recently stayed over at a friends house for a couple of days and in the course of my visit i washed my hair . . . i took off my glasses and got in the shower and turned the water on and seeing two brightly coloured bottles of a similar shape together i presumed they were shampoo and conditioner . . .

i wet my hair and reached for the first bottle, looking at the label

"shampoo"

excellent, i picked the right one

lather, rinse

i reached for the second bottle and looked at the label

"shampoo"

WHAT?

hang on . . .

i grabbed both of them side by side, they both said "shampoo" . . . total craziness . . . well, for me anyway, i buy special intensive moisturising conditioners and masks and treatments and have a huge selection at any one time . . . i have extremely dry, damaged hair which is naturally curly . . . no conditioner means disaster for me!

i scanned the bathroom frantically

i yelled out to my friend in desperation

"wheres the conditioner"

"oh sorry we ran out"

ahhhh this is not going to be good

i presume when you have long straight thin hair conditioner is not an essential product, but for me i knew it was going to mean STRAW

i blow-dried my hair and tied back as much as i could in a tiny pirates ponytail and smoothed over the shorter bits with my hair straightener, ran a bit of hand moisturiser threw the ends for good measure . . . crossed my fingers for luck

by the end of the day i had hair like Helena Bonham Carter!

now i love Helena Bonham Carter as an actress and i admire her bohemian style and gothic roles but she and i share a certain unruly hair type that i think you can only really get away with if you are an eccentric hollywood starlet . . . possibly married to Tim Burton . . .

Oh gosh, Morgan. But if it helps, at least she is the best at that unique hairstyle. Do you accidently apply your eye make-up like hers too? That would’ve been double-scary....

hi Tracy,
i was always wondering how she achieved such volumous wild hair and now i am convinced she doesnt use conditioner either!

hi Aways Eighteen,
shes a gorgeous little thing, and shes absolutely tiny with big big hair!
she looked fantastic in Merlin and more recently in Sweeney Todd

No conditioner! If I did that by the end of the day I wouldn't look as unique and eccentric as Helena, I would look like a dandelion.

I'm sure you looked windswept and interesting

haha hi Cheryl,
yes i thought it looked very pastoral, which was appropriate because i was in the country lol
i think it was the texture that disturbed me the most . . . oh and perhaps that in a different outfit i could have been a cave woman!

Morgan, my curly hair is so long and unruly it still looks like Helena hair after conditioner and leave-in treatment.

Whenever I visit my mum up in Sydney, she always stuffs a bottle of conditioner and a comb in my bag. She doesn't quite believe me when I tell her I actually go through three bottles of conditioner for every bottle of shampoo. No joke.

hi Ruby,
wow thats alot of conditioner!
i go through a bit more conditioner than shampoo but i would settle for a teaspoonful as opposed to nothing haha

Ha ha morgan you crack me up. My hair is so straight and I can't even use conditioner only detangler other wise my hair lies in a sad flat mess against my head. Oh I would kill to have Helena Bohnam hair.

hi Sara,
i knew there must be a flipside to my predicament!
ive always wondered what you straight-haired folks do for your beauty routine!
isnt it funny how us curly-hairs spend our whole lives trying to tame the birds nests . . . we envy your natural smoothness!

I spent most of my life trying to pretend I didn't have curly hair.

Then one day I had an epiphany, and thought, 'F*ck this, I'm going wild!" My straightener had also just died, and I was running late.

Since then, I have embraced my untamed locks, turning away from chemical straightening and balms and potions promising flat, smooth tresses.

I have regretted it many times. Managing my hair without assistance from the get-go is a bloody nightmare. Cowlicks, tangles, hot ears, quirky hats ejected by bouffant madness.

Nevertheless, curly I am and curly I shall remain. I'm a contrary lass, and like to make life difficult for myself. There is no moral to this fable. I just wanted to share my own sad tale.

hi Michaelie,
thats not a sad tale, that is a triumphant tale!
when i have my hair sufficiently conditioned i often just leave it curly when im at home but i run a straightener through the front whenever im going somewhere
i actually really admire people like Helena Bonham Carter and yourself who embrace their natural hair and make the most of it . . . i had an english lit lecturer at uni and a highschool english teacher who had curly hair left completely natural and i thought it was quiet beautiful, unique and defiant!
thanks for the comment . . . Aesop would be proud of your fable!

A little practical advice from an old head -

If you don't have any conditioner - or want to go down the non-chemical path try a little tea tree or jojoba oil, or coating your hair with a mashed avocado or 1/2 cup whole milk or mayonnnaise.

The first option works a treat - the second is an emergency treatment - but given most homes have milk or mayo - it gets you through the day - just make sure you rinse

Morgan, I love your Helena Bonham Carter hair- Well much more than the olive oil look any ways... I mean really, leaving a slimy residue on train windows is so 1980's =)

hi MNG,
wow that was some handy advice!
now im imagining you with long luxurious flowing hair like fabio or bon jovi or brad pitt out of legends of the fall!
i wonder if anyone would look at me weird if i ran out of the shower to grab some mayo?

hi alt_ed,
if i had known there was no conditioner i definately would not have begun washing it, the alternative being a very oily do! haha
a bit like Nicola Roxin (CLICKHERE for more . . . )

hey did anyone hear about the record breaking art auction last month of the Picasso called "Sylvette" . . . the lady who inspired the work also inspired the hairdo of Bridgit Bardot

Hehehe. I have wavy hair which goes frizzy if I don't use conditioner... most of the time. I have lots of split ends but I keep it long anyway.

hi epiphanie,
i think that may have been one of the first times in my life i shampooed without conditioning . . . it was an interesting experiment but i dont think ill be doing it again any time soon! (unless im going to a fancy-dress as cro-magnum girl haha)
