Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Wow, I love these. My favorite is the first drawing with a man holding a skull. I would feature that in my home. Beautiful and haunting imagery. The drawings on some level remind me of Marilyn Manson's artwork, albeit not quite as morbid.

You are going to UNI? I never knew this. Photomedia - WAY COOL!!!!!! I thought you just hung out in Newcastle because you thought it was cool

In regards to Matt's work I think the drawings are leagues ahead of his photography and quite amazing. I would pay for the one with the dog's head shadow. It's intriguing and dark. Love it

Is Matt about 30yrs old? I used to know a Matt Reed and could imagine him doing this stuff. Ask him if he ever knew moi or worked in the film industry - perhaps AFTRS? I am sure there are hundreds of Matt Reeds out there but you never know.

hi Natalina,

you have excellent taste!

the skull drawing is called "Mister Gangley and His Son", the original has sold but canvas prints are available for AU$80.40 (so probably ten bucks american haha)

heres the link: Really Long Link

i agree the drawings are quite Manson-esque

hi Jason,

oops sorry hunny, typo on my part, i mean he (Mathew) is doing Photomedia, i fixed it so it reads properly now

Mat is an acquaintance of mine, i know many people from Newcastle Uni from growing up and living in the area, but unfortunately i am not in the fine arts department myself (maybe one day!)

hes two years younger than me, so that would make him 25 at the moment . . . hes on my facebook if you wanna have a sticky-beak

the dogs head one is called "Got Your Back", the original is sold but he has canvas prints available (also AU$80.40)

heres the link: Really Long Link

and heres the blurb that accompanied the work:

“Mathew Reed’s series of works reflects on the long history of man and his deep spiritual bond with a companion animal. He touches on various religions and cultures as he expresses a spiritual connection with the protective otherworldly silhouette of a wolf. His centre piece work, Spiritual Quest, was heavily influenced by the traditions of native tribes in North America who would embark on vision quests to discover their place in their tribe. On these quests, the child would have a dream where their spirit guardian would come to them in the form of an animal. Mathew touches on this tradition while adding his own flavour, looking inside himself, walking one way with his guardian while considering the branching path leading in another direction.”

hi Norm,

i can see why a man being controlled by puppet-strings would interest you

hi Jeff,

i love finding new up and coming artists, i think Mat has real potential, and judging from the amount of works sold already i wouldnt be surprised if we hear more about him later

Gee you find some great art, Morgan.

I love the first one. For some reason it reminds me of the tires many dads used to use to make swings for their sons. They used to be very common in backyards but I don't think I have seen one for a long time.

hi Janet,

theres just so much great art out there, ripe for the picking!

i know the swings you are talking about, the imagery is often used into American films reminiscing about lost youth, the kids swing out on a tyre on a rope and splash into a lagoon or creek

Morgan, Reed's paintings are as good as his photos did! For me, they're truly the divine masterpieces...
