Matthew Mitchum pictorial
February 3rd 2009 16:11
Matthew Mitcham was the only man among 10,500 Olympic athletes who declared himself homosexual at the Beijing Olympic games.
Matthew is also the first openly gay Australian to go to the Olympics.
Matthew won Gold in Diving by earning four perfect 10s on his last dive on the 10m platform. That last dive was the highest scoring dive in the history of the Olympics and also made Mitchum Australia's first male Olympic Gold medalist in Diving since Dick Eve in 1924.
Mitcham, 20, battled anxiety and depression which saw him retire in his teenage years. He had a physical and emotional burn-out. Nine months after his retirement Mitchum resumed his sport and built himself into a champion.
One person who has been by his side for the entire tumultuous journey is his partner, Lachlan.
"I just want to be known as the Australian diver who did really well at the Olympics, ... It’s everybody else who thinks it’s special when homosexuality and elite sports go together."

i love hearing about comebacks from depression, i might do a little tribute to Jelena Dokic next!
hi Alt_Ed,
geez you are hard to please when it comes to the human form!
i hereby issue a challenge: do a post of people (men, women, actors, athletes etc) that you do not consider "gross" . . . i have absolutely no idea where you are coming from sometimes . . .

I can't believe he was the only openly gay person, there are so many Olympic athletes that are gay. Sheesh, what's the problem?

i think that the emphasis was on the word "man", as in there may be openly gay females, but still it appears that Matthew Mitchum is either a bit of an anomoly, or uniquely open and honest
he has amazing muscle definition - these action shots are very beautiful!

Those photos are art in motion. Beautiful. Nothing quite as beautiful as the human body, in my mind ..and I have to say, I really like your poem. *laughs* it is really good. Reminds me of when the Devil is talking about *I am the coolest* in Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. I Loved that album and can remember playing it to death many years ago. *lol*
Quite a treat.
