Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Meat Thief

November 11th 2008 13:28
i just had a funny supermarket moment!

i bought a small selection of groceries including a few pre-packaged steaks and rissoles from the meat department . . . when i was at the register preparing to pay, the checkout boy scanned and bagged my meat products, and when he swung the meat bag out to the end of the bay for me to take the security sensor went off . . .

the checkout boy looked puzzled and his supervisor came over to assist . . .

the checkout boy demonstrated how when you passed the bag of meat in front on the sensor the alarm went off - see, its just meat

the supervisor said "About time! Damn meat thieves!"

i shared the boy's quizzical look . . .

she continued "I've been waiting for them to put security tags on the meat - you wouldnt believe the meat thieves we get in here!"

gee times are tough when you have to steal meat from the supermarket!

although i must admit, the more expensive cuts of meat are getting extremely dear!

Meat Thief

i made this little collage to commererate the era of the Meat Theif!

God you won't believe where my thoughts took me on the title of this post!

I went to buy a steak the other day and for the same price I could go to the pub and have bought one cooked and served up with veggies. This is why I'm such a crap cook.

I love your little collage haha

hi Cheryl,
get your mind out of the gutter woman! haha
im a firm believer in the fact that food tastes better if someone else cooks it for you . . . so if you dont have your mum, a house-husband, or some kid or servant on hand, the pub is a really good option!
i glad you can appreciate my artwork!

The chop looks like Tassie.

hahah love the collage Morgen!

Buying free-range chicken sets me back a fair bit so picking a pocket (or meat section) or two does seem an attractive idea!

Good to know the supermarkets are on to it though...could have been emabrassing later on tonight for me.

Hehe

Hi Morgan,

You think meat thieving is a bad sign? Many years ago when I was living in Vancouver, a friend of mine got done for stealing a clove of garlic from a little Asian grocer. The owner stopped short of calling the cops but he did drag my poor hapless friend back to the office and fill out a shop lifting report. In the box marked "Value of Goods", he wrote "10 cents". The he banned him from the store for good. Now that was hilarious. We teased the poor bugger about it for months. Like seriously, if you can't lift a clove of garlic without getting busted, best to leave that sort of thing to someone else right?

But I can understand why people resort to stealing food. But did you know most shop stealing is done by employees? I think the ratio is 60-40. I was just reading an article saying that as the economic crisis worsens retailers are tightening security measures as they expect to lose even more stock to their employees.

I've always been one to call a spade a spade, but that's no chop, it's a T-bone steak!

You know there are quite a few 'professional' meat thieves out there. Particularly people who may be involved in some kind of Italian pizzeria. I've seen people attempt to steal hundreds of dollars worth of meat, so it can be quite lucrative.

By the way, is that some fillet steak in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

I used to work in a supermarket - we'd get meat thieves all the time, apparently. Kids nick candy bars, but knowledgeable thieves go for T-Bone steaks!

oh and clove of garlic . . . you'd never show your again! LOL
(is it just me or is Norm getting funnier?)

hi Damien,

Good to hear about Gimp. Is it as good as photoshop do you think (not that I would really know how good photoshop is). Did you use it at all for your banners, etc. because you site(s) look good.

hi Janet,
Cheryl actually made the banner for Deep Pencil (i presume with Photoshop) and i made the banners for Movie Train, Artist Quirk, and Current Business News with Microsoft Publisher . . . ive never used the official Photoshop myself . . . Gimp isnt really that user-friendly, or maybe i just dont have enough practice!

bahahaha! "Pounded with proscuito". "Hits back with ham". That's the best non-story I have ever seen. Talk about a slow news day. That poor reporter. I can imagine his face when his editor gave him the assignment.

HAHA

I worked as a checkout chick when I was a schoolgirl, and once had to 'guard' an office with a meat thief inside, until the police came.

It was a woman, caught with over a hundred dollars of meat on her person. They caught her on the camera putting sausages down her pants (insert joke) and later found filet mignons up her sleeves, a leg of lamb in her handbag... quite a bounty, she had.

Great collage and comments!

hi Michaelie,
wow really?
this is all new to me . . .
i didnt realise there were so many people thieving meat!
gee would the supermarket even want the meat back that had been down someones pants? haha
thanks for sharing your story!
hope things are well with you!

Oh yes, once the police came and hauled her off to jail, it was my job to put the meat back out on display...

Ha, just joshing you. No, and they didn't charge her in the end either. I think she must have just been a bored young housewife. Unless it was you making a start on your career in attempted meat thievery? What were you doing in the mid-nineties?

Lol.

All is A OK with me, have just been a bit absent of late, with one thing or another!

Cheers lassie.
