my very first iPod
June 4th 2008 09:26
a couple of months ago my mum gave me an iPod Shuffle, she chose it out of a workplace rewards catalogue (an sales incentive program) and i guess she though well Morgans a young person and young people like iPods and gadgets . . . i actually dont download much music and usually just listen to CDs in the car so while i was impressed with the gift and how shiney and new it was i was also a bit daunted and just put it to one side
i was watching a forum on TV about the controversy surrounding "illegal" downloads and all these kids were saying how much they were downloading and i thought "HEY i have an iPod maybe i should actually invest a couple of hours into seeing how it works?"
as an adult i have moved house about every six months and everytime i move my CD collection seems to dwindle, flatmates mix up our collections or i lose the cases when i put them in the car, or . . . i dont really know . . . sometimes they show up a year after i thought they were gone forever and sometimes they are never to be seen again
every once in awhile i think i should really burn my albums to the computer so i have an electronic copy if (when) i lose the original disk . . . but i lose motivation fairly quickly as it is such a massive task
see usually my flatmates had the cutting edge pop, electro and RnB music so someone was always burning me a CD or we would hang out in their room to listen to music on their computer . . . its just sheer laziness on my part
but lately i have re-kindled my obsession with JLo . . . my old JLo CDs are all lost or scratched to buggery . . . hundreds of dollars wasted there haha . . . and no little gay companion with the songs automatically blaring out of the back room
JLo to me is like Abba to Muriel (Toni Colette in the Australian film Muriels Wedding), its a bit of a pick me up, something cheery and melodic to lift the spirits
so i grabbed to iPod . . .
i took me most of the afternoon to download iTunes and fill out all the online forms with address and credit card details etc . . . then over to Limewire to grab a couple of JLo hits . . . import all the music from my Windows Media Player to iTunes, click and drop an ecclectic selection onto my iPod and tada
im listening to JLo, Soundgarden, Gwen Stefani, Coldplay, Kylie, David Bowie, Annie Lennox and Amy Winehouse . . . its like magic!
iPod . . . a mini gay jukebox!

I could not afford one for ages but got myself a 30GB Ipod Video about a year ago and then sat down and burnt my 500 CD's onto the IPOD and threw out the CD racks and put all the CD's into a folder thingy. So much space saving and now I have 17days straight of music I can listen to without a repeat. I probably listen to about 10 albums off it. I am overly obsessed with Jeff Buckley at the moment and a band I consider the best in the world called VAST. Their self titled album is totally amazing. Like your music choices - Amy kicks ass - how cool are those lyrics??

see this is why i should live with you, the gays always have the most comprehensive electronic music collections . . . 17 days of straight music, how fabulous!
i will have to check out VAST, i think i need to expand my musical horizons, i love hearing new stuff
and as a bonus this iPod blocks out the sound of my noisy parents haha . . . i dont know how i managed to avoid having an MP3 player all this time, sharehouse living my friend!

Vast is GREAT - if you ever watched The Beach movie - they had the song over the credits. It's one guy and every album he gets a different band for a different feel to the music. In the first self titled he goes tribal with tribes singing the back up. It's AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
Try searching on Limewire for: Temptation, Touched, I'm Dying (OK - it's tribal EMO and this is MY FAVE) and Flames (just beautiful). But anything on the first album is amazing. Vast stands for Visual Audio Sensory Theatre. Let me know what you think.

hi Ahmed,

Good place to start looking: Really Long Link
Though Apple has a habit of attempting to make the 'comeptition' redundant so with random updates to the ipod they break compatibility.

Small Thoughts on Big Questions
I have an older iPod (no video, black and white display instead of color, larger than a book of matches) and I LOVE it. I was never much interested in it until 2 or 3 years ago, feeling that CDs were just fine. But man, once you get used to having 10 straight days of music in a device the size of a pack of cigarettes, it's pretty easy to lose your enthusiasm for CDs.
I actually just bought a cable to hook my iPod up to my home stereo. I've been hooking it up and playing through my XBox, but now I can just hook it up to my receiver directly, which is easier. If you have a home stereo you can pick up one of those cables for very cheap, and you'll never need to look at your CDs again!
Congrats on entering the true digital age of music. And while Ahmed is sort of right, and iTunes is fairly crappy, it's still pretty damned cool.

I'm bet you had lots of sweet memories for this first iPod, as the first thing that existed in our life will be the most precious of all...

Won't apologise for loving our Macs (yes we're a Mac family) - and it's ipods all round for the Nice Guy girls.
That said - there is a program available which is used by DJ's on PC's - which is a free download if you're interested.
Why not check it out

thanks for the link, iTunes seems ok but its always good to check out the competition
hi Winston,
are you trying to tell me theres not a JLo marathon going on in your iPod? haha
ive only got the little baby iPod Shuffle with no screen and i think only has a 2GB (240 song) capacity . . . but if i get really addicted to it i might consider investing in a bigger one!
i wonder if you can hook my little mini one up to a stereo . . . probably not, although even if you could it would require me figuring it out . . . often when friends have parties nowadays all the music comes from an iPod hooked up to a stereo . . . technology!
hi wilson-pon,
yes "firsts" always have sentimental value, i can remember not wanting to get rid of my first car even though it was falling apart
hi MNG,
some more links, excellent, thankyou!
i think the Macs look really attractive but im just so set in my ways with computing, i dont even like it when they update Windows or MS Word haha
im such a nanna fearing technological change!
thanks for the comments everyone!

I had an Ipod mini for a while. Then it broke. I fixed it. It broke again. A couple of my friends are on their third iPods. So I bought a Creative Zen. It rocks. Haven't had a problem with it yet and I don't have to deal with iTunes.
But I've heard rumours that they've been discontinued, and Apple is the only company making large capacity music players anymore.

actually Lilla would be interested in that too . . . its a shame electronic products are purposely made not to last so they can sell more . . . i find the same thing with mobile phones too, they really only have a couple of years lifespan because they believe people will want to update to the latest model
im new to MP3 players in general so all this info about different brands and products is great!

A quick look at the creative web site tells me that their biggest one now is 60Gb, but more a video player than an MP3 player.

same goes for all the ipods minus the tiny ones that are often mistaken for lemon drops.
60gb with a big screen can still play music.
