NEW Orble channel: self indulgence?
March 24th 2008 11:55
When i write on my Orble blog i often cant find an Orble channel to accurately represent the overall dominant themes of the post . . . i cant find the "most correct" category for my blog post listed in the drop down menu for the Orble channel selector . . . this may not be an Orble technical issue, it may just be the self indulgent nature of some of my posts . . .
I think what im really scanning the drop down list for is something along the lines of
"Channel = ME!!!!!" and for some reason i just cant find it? haha
Now MySpace is a site tailored to teen emo bloggers who are the masters of self indulgence, so over there we see categories like "Blogging" to accomodate people who have written a blog post entirely about writing blog posts, very post-modern and self-referential i know, MySpace is the height of sophistication! ive seen people post to their myspace blog with just a single paragraph saying:
"whats up with having a category called Blogging, like wtf does that even mean, oooo im so angry at my parents right now . . . " you get the picture
I did a screen grab of MySpace blog categories incase anyone reading this wasnt familiar . . . as you can see we have categories like "Friends", "MySpace", "Parties and Nightlife", and of course my favourite "Life"
On Orble when writing about the process or the experience of blogging or reading/commenting blogs i guess we can choose "Technology - The Web" but its just not as accurate as having a a whole channel called "Orble" like how MySpace has a category called "MySpace"
Also with Orble we can choose "Lifestyle" with the sub-channels being "Dating", "Fashion", "Food", "Parenting", or "Other" . . . but when i write a blog about being white trash, or my cat, or how i have no friends on Orble, i find i put it under the general topic of "Lifestyle" as none of the sub-channels are really appropriate
Similarly with film reviews, i think i have selected "Entertainment - Film - Drama" for nearly every film i have posted about as the options just dont seem to be quite right . . . i want to say "Indie" or "Arthouse" or "Period", "Historical", or "Bio-pic" . . . i guess the options are endless . . . i really wanted to pick "Romance" AND "Comedy" the other day when i reviewd a romantic comedy, it really is a genre of it own, but it seems Orble is more in broad sections like the DVD store . . . although Orble is leaps ahead of MySpace in the film department as MySpace just throws "Movies, TV, Celebriites" into the one big category
Now i think my MySpace blogger roots are showing again if these are the issues that really keep me up at night! lol (if you cant laugh at yourself then whats the point of it all?)
Above: a screen grab of how to select an Orble channel - if we were to accomodate every person and topic with and Orble channel the drop down list would be infinite and it would take a REALLY long time to scroll through
Oh and as a final note i would just like to declare that i LOVE how on Orble we can add keywords as "Tags" . . . it helps refine the topic beyond the broad channel selection and gives the search engines a little extra help looking . . . and thats the final word from this little nerd!
