Photos: Foreshore & Nobbys Beach, Newcastle
September 13th 2009 14:16
It was a beautiful sunny day in Newcastle today, so I hit the beach.
Im not much of a swimmer but I did go for a nice long walk, camera in hand. Newcastle is my home city. It's a city of petrol-heads, singlets and thongs, manufacturing and mining, and drinking in the day. When I was taking these photos a nicely dressed man with no teeth approached me and asked for $1.50 because he was short for the cost of a cask of wine.
People yell out of car windows a lot in Newcastle. The beach carparks and foreshore is packed with utes and V8s, illegally modified and lowered, sometimes with holographic paint.
This is Nobbys Beach in Newcastle, NSW.
Nobbys Head lighthouse.
A boy in a skirt at Nobbys Beach.
This graffiti is so Newcastle.
Customs House, Newcastle.
We like phallic symbols in Newcastle.
Here is a map of Newcastle Foreshore and Nobbys Beach. The lighthouse is slightly off the map, but the route I walked to take photos is marked in yellow. The coffe cup symbol on Bond St is Customs House.

NEWCASTLE (The Song)
In west wallsend its flannos and motorbikes
Bar beach its a surfing life
Cooks hill they,re being arty
East end party, party, party
Iso,Caro lock your doors
Or if your lucky pull down your draws
Hamo,s cosmopolitan
Throsby creek looks great but i,d skip the swim
BRIDGE
He got out a civic station
Walked across the lines
Saw the big penis
Said "Where the fuck am i"
CHORUS
Newcastle OH OH OH OH OH OH OH
Newcastle OH OH OH OH OH OH OH
Newcastle OH OH OH OH OH OH OH
Its so beautiful my dear
They can bury me here
Does show , bucks night
Pubcrawls in a double decker
Dickheads in a fight
Probably over someones haircut
The JR is rocking hard
With black T-shirts and mini skirts
Jumpclub , Fannwaas
Oh can we get a cab , coz my feet hurt
BRIDGE
With kae-sahn on the radio
And orange shit in the sky(Mayfield)
The tourist grabbed his roadmap
Said "Where the fuck am ï""???
CHORUS
Well its time to head
Its getting ugly
Shitfaced people
With the munchies
They migrate to maccas
Or Hamburger Haven
Beer and mull and egg and bacon
The bogey hole for skinny dippin
Strezlecki car park kissing
Some are sightseeing
Some i bet are
At John Hunter nine months later
BRIDGE
With 30,000 people screeming "Go the knights"
The footballer looked around him
said "Where the fuck am i"?
CHORUS
Who,s been to the Beaches on a Sunday night?
Newcastle OH OH OH OH OH OH OH
And who,s driven over Stocton bridge and seen the city lights at night?
Newcastle OH OH OH OH OH OH OH
Because i,ve been to Nobby,s to watch the dawn
Nearly pissed my pants from a ships fog horn
BOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
CHORUS
words and music

i hope the little song i posted further explains the Newcastle attitude towards phallic monuments
hi IandMe,
Newcastle is a great place to visit if you like the beach and you like driving . . . and drinking lol
you can do wine tours up in the Hunter Valley vineyards, and theres a vibrant nightlife
funny how you never take photos of the place you live because you think well i can see that any time, im glad i made an effort to capture the place in photos
thanks for the comment

Beneath all the drunken boganism there is a quite tight-knit little creative scene going on. You just need to look really, really hard to find it... Or go to the Lass O'Gowrie!

theres quite a thriving little art and culture scene, kind of like the uni student bohemian scene, and the theatre scene
i couldnt find my niche in Newcastle when i was growing up, i moved to Sydney as soon as highschool ended, but now i kind of enjoy the simplicity of the place, the people are kind of genuine and content
i like the Gateway Hotel but i can be dragged to the Cambridge, theres a lot of creativity going on at the This Is Not Art festival and Watt Space gallery
