Queer Honi
March 10th 2009 13:07
Honi Soit is a tabloid style weekly newspaper distributed FREE to all Sydney University campuses, and is a must read for all students at Sydney University.
Honi Soit plays a vital role in enriching Sydney University's campus community by giving a voice to student issues and interests. Each edition incorporates a variety of satirical and serious articles with regular features and columns including: Education News, Arts Reviews (music, theatre, cinema, literature), Gig Guide, Head to Head, University Sports and more.
Three special editions are published each year, including: Women's Honi, Queer Honi and Election Honi.
In 2008, due the the joys of the queer grapevine, Morgan Bell contributed content to the Queer Honi.
Thanks to the beautiful and talented collaborator who included me in this project, Mich Charles Deahm.
Check out pages 24 and 25 for Morgan's piece on Asexuality. The whole publication is a great read, so take advantage of the FREE online PDF version.

The name is short for the phrase "Honni soit qui mal y pense" (French: "shame upon him who thinks evil of it"), the motto of the British Order of the Garter.
Honi Soit is produced by a team of student editors, who are elected by the student body in the SRC annual elections. Many former editors have gone on to become leaders in the arts, journalism, law and Australian politics, including Clive James, Laurie Oakes, Keith Windschuttle, with contributors including Andrew Reimer and members of The Chaser.
Honi Soit commenced publication in 1929 to counteract the mainstream Sydney press who had set about demonising Sydney Uni students after one Commemoration Day got a little out of control.

I just read your article (and the whole of the publication), and I have to say it was extraordinarily well-written. I loved the line where you write something like 'eventually you have to stop being a copy of a person and start being yourself' or something like that - that's very positive!
I was happy to see you there, and hope you'll contribute to more publications - they'd be lucky to have you!

I am a little reluctant to embrace HS due to headlines like 'queerphobes are dumbfucks' (as you know, I'm neither fond of swearing or the words 'queer' and 'dumb'), but I did read almost all of it and found most of the content of sizable interest...

yeah ive had that conversation with you about the word "queer" before - i love it as an umbrella term for everyone outside the heteronorm
maybe we should write a joint "debate" type article about the word "queer" for some paying magazine!
hi Janet,
thanks so much for having a read!
its probably a niche topic in a very niche publication but theres probably a few things in there for everyone . . . well maybe not Chuck Norris
