Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Genderbread

A cute diagram of sex, gender, orientation, and expression, and the spectrum that exists within each of them.

I find visual aids like this to be really useful when introducing noobs to queer theory and the complexity of diversity when it comes to human identity.

Last week I was interviewed for Hack on Triple J on the topic of Asexuality for Love Week.

The program aired last Tuesday 19 July 2011.

Check out the podcast here.

asexual love bugs

This is the little blurb on their website:

Sex is everywhere, if you're not having sex right now, you're probably thinking about it...

(Note: having sex while listening to Hack stories is a bit weird... but whatever floats your boat).

But could you love someone you couldn't have sex with?

Around 1% of the population identifies as asexual, they're not sexually attracted to guys or girls.

The website for the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, or AVEN, explains asexuality in terms of a stereo, "Everyone has a volume knob and a tuning knob, there are some who have their volume knob turned right down."

But many asexuals still want relationships, someone they can share everything with...except sex.

We found out how you negotiate a relationship when bumping uglies is off the table...

More info? Check out the AVEN site...

It was actually about a 45 minute interview, cut down to a couple of minutes of sound grabs, but I was happy with the result.

I did find my intro a little curious as I repeatedly said I would not discuss the specifics of my own sex life and consider it to be none of anyone's business. They also then ironically used a quote from me about how equating asexuality with a complete lack of sex is incorrect.

I wonder if I could get a copy of the full interview? I just can't get enough of my pronounced gay lisp.

Mardi Gras 2010 (photos)

March 7th 2010 14:56
Last weekend was Sydney's Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade along Oxford St and Flinders St in beautiful diverse Darlinghurst.

It was a warm day. I got ready with three dragqueens in Tempe and commuted by train in full costume from Sydenham Station to Central Station.

Here are some pictorial highlights. I was at The Taxi Club but many of my friends marched in the parade.

Lavender

November 1st 2009 12:18
A few years ago on MySpace I read an inspirational short tory called "Lavender".

The full article is now available at Brizzle's Basket by William A Browning (aka Bill Brizzle).

This guy is an amazing story writer. He writes based on real life people and events, so his stories contain strong visualisations and find uncommon wisdom in everyday events.

"Lavender" starts with a brilliant quote from Ann Landers.

“The world would be in a total state of shock if everyone who is gay, bi or who has had homosexual experiences, thoughts and desires were to turn the color lavender for just one day.”

Brizzle then goes on to discuss the benefits of visability and being "out" when it comes to combatting homophobia.

"Everyone I’ve ever known who didn’t/doesn’t like gays and lesbians didn’t/don’t know any.

Every time in my life that I’ve changed a person’s viewpoint, and there have been more than a few times, I did it simply by letting someone know me."

This is an idea reiterated by queer theorists and gay activists throughout recent history.

It is one of the most resounding messages in Gus Van Sant's film "Milk".

Harvey Milk: "People vote two to one for us if they know just one of us."

Harvey Milk: "If we're gonna convince the 90% to give a shit about us 10%... We have to let 'em know who we are. Everybody's coming out. The entire state. No matter where they live."

Harvey Milk: "I'm serious. We're going to tell everyone in the state to come out. Every gay doctor, lawyer, teacher, dog catcher... We have to leave the ghetto, let all those people out there know that they do know one of us. And if people won't step out of the closet, we open the door for them."

Quotes from MILK (2008) Written by Dustin Lance Black.

Brizzle says it even more plainly:

"We weren’t meant to live in goddamn closets. We were meant to live in homes and neighborhoods and countries. NONE of us should have to live in such confined, claustrophobic spaces and no one benefits from us doing so. Nope. Closets are only good for storing our shit…"

Read the full article: "Lavender" on the Brizzle website, and check out the rest of his story catalogue. Plenty of queer content, and valuable life lessons.

Imagine if everyone who "had homosexual experiences, thoughts and desires" turned lavender. What a powerful thought.

Imagine a world without prejudice, without the need for closets . . . is it a world where everyone on the planet realises they are acquainted with at least one queer person?

The Transsexual Gene

April 20th 2009 10:46
Its all in your genes, we now know.

So many things about us are predetermined and mapped out in those little human blueprints called DNA. Scientists have discovered the individual genes that lead to many physical and behavioural attributes. We now know that the phenomenon of transsexualism is a genetic trait. Desiring a sex change is biological, gender identity really is something you are born with

The Non-Binary Gender Guide

April 13th 2009 16:32
For some people gender is not an on/off question. There is ambiguity in birth sex, genitals, gonads, chromosomes, outward expression, self-identity, and social roles. The question of male/female is not always as straight-forward as it seems.

Here is a helpful fact-sheet defining many of the diverse groups and terms which make up the gender spectrum

Chuck Norris, you disappoint me . . .

Chuck Norris needs to go have a big long chat to Jared about how he can improve his life and become less hateful . . . Jared knows the path to true zen and harmony . . .

I do believe that we should equally and adamantly oppose such aberrant sexual behavior from being condoned or commemorated in our public schools through textbooks or a so-called "Day of Silence."
