Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Spineless Stressed Hedgehog

March 26th 2009 19:06
This strange looking critter is Spud. He is a spineless hedgehog living in Buckinghamshire in the UK.

Spud is estimated to be three years old and vets are baffled as to when and why he lost his spines. Several medical tests have been performed, bringing back zero answers.

Spud's carers are concerned to release him back into the wild in a spineless condition as he will not be able to protect himself against cold weather or predators.

Extreme stress seems the most plausible explanation for the hedgehog shedding his spines, however the skin condition is still being treated as a mystery at this stage.

Spud will remain at the Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital until he is recovered.

Get well soon, Spud!

I hope poor Spud isn't too cold. And I hope the other hedgehogs don't tease him.

Awww, poor Spud. That's the sweetest weird animal I've seen in a long time. The people at Tiggywinkles are lovely, by the way: when I worked for the RSPCA I got to talk to them a couple of times. Animal lovers are the nicest people in the world.

The uglier it gets the more I love it.

It is cute. That doesn't mean I hate it.

So cute! He would make a cuddly pet without all of those prickly bits. Actually a world would be a much better place if we could get rid of some of the pricks

Aww poor Spud... I wonder what happened to him to get so stressed? I hope he's in a peaceful and harmonious environment.

Poor Spud. He looks naked and vulnerable.
I wonder if there any echidnas that have lost their quills.
Do you think it could be an advanced hair loss problem?

advanced hair? yeah yeah
he does look very vulnerable doesnt he?

Spud is a little heart-breaker!

All he needs is another spineless friend and they can stop being terrified of having sex without being stabbed somewhere. I think it's cute and now some freaky scientist is devising a way of breeding them this way so we can all have another pet to add to our menageries.

Spineless usually refers to people who have no guts or courage. Poor Spud. Without an actual spine, how would you cope?

Comment by Morgan Bell

March 28th 2009 16:52
hi Jason,
oh really, which freaky scientist is that?
it must be a dangerous excercise having hegdehog on hegdehog sex, if they both have spines of course!

hi Janet,
in this case it refers to his spikey bristles
although i guess if he had actually not spinal column it would be even worse
id say he has alot of courage to survive without his natural defence mechanism

It looks like he has a bad case of mange or possibly another type of skin mite.

Saw a headline in a paper the other day, announcing that he'd got his spines back!
