Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Study, study, study

April 6th 2010 21:25
What has happened to my beautiful blogs?

I have abandoned them, chasing after scholarly things, and now they call me back like abandoned dirty-faced children.

I have still been popping in to comment the bloggers I subscribe to, but for one reason or another I never seem to have time to squeeze an article out myself. This must change!

You may notice I am writing a tad more professionally, a capital letter here, a full stop there. Well. I've been doing a Post-Graduate course in Technical Communications @ Swinburne University of Technology, online.

I did a TAFE course in News Media a couple of years ago. Then I did a TAFE course in Small Business Management where I researched free-lancing as a career. Then I considered teaching journalism and did a TAFE course in Training & Assessment. I like to keep all my options open.

So it's been study, study, study for me.

I'm doing Civil Construction Design at TAFE concurrently with my PostGrad studies, just to make sure I am completely occupied at all times.

Facebook has made me lazy. It is so much quicker to post a link to an existing article or video on Facebook than it is to construct a blog post myself. I've been taking the cheats way out. But I do miss my blogs, And I miss my little blogging community.

I feel very encouraged by all these new changes to homepage, and the new systems of having "followers" and "editor stars". It's a brave new world here on Orble.

I think I should set one day a week aside to cue up some fresh material, and use the forward dating system to stagger them out over the week. I need to get more organised and get publishing. I need to do it. I want to do it. I will do it.

I could probably prepare some educational posts on all the stuff I'm learning. Plus there's a never-ending stream of news and events from the queer community that really needs to be shared with the inter-webs.

To all my subscribers: thanks for sticking around, and expect some fresh new content soon.

You call those excuses for your poor recent blogging performance? Naughty Morgy. You will stay back after class today and write three blog posts.

As for the grammar, I want to hug you

I have to write on the forums in standard grammar, and I find it difficult to toggle between two writing styles, so I guess we are getting conformity on Deep Pencil from now on.

I still want to write an entire novel with no capitalisation or apostrophes. (I think it looks rad)

I wonder how many people think the same thing when young. I did. Eventually I realised that we all try to be different, and this is an easy way out. Fool's gold.

Wow Morgan. You must be addicted to study! I have certainly noticed your absence and thought you must have found some other place to share your thoughts.

I look forward to reading your blogs in your new style!

Hi Chris,

I guess there are things we create for functionality, and things we create for artistic expression, and never the twain shall meet.

Hi Janet,

It is so much easier to update my Facebook status than it is to upload links and pictures, place advertisements, tag, title, and draft a blog post. But I vow to cease the laziness and create consistent web content from here on in.

Hi Sam,

Sounds like its exams all round!

Even when I'm dormant I'm still snooping around, I love seeing how the site is going and what sort of content everyone is producing. I just can't stay away.

Great that you are working hard on your education. I'm sure you would be a great journalism teacher . It wasn't so long ago that bloggers were looked down by the so called "real journalists" now most of the big names in the media have blogs themselves. As for grammar...this is the one place where I get to be lazy with mine..and I take full advantage of it

Hi Dianna,

Thanks. I look forward to catching up on all my favourite blogs, including yours.

Hi Steve,

I think journalism is definitely taking a shift towards new media, blogging is the future!
