Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

such a little suitcase . . .

August 24th 2008 06:47
have you noticed in the movies when a woman goes to leave their husband they always pack the smallest suitcase?

it makes me think theyre not really serious if they opt for the really little suitcase!

if your husband cheated on you or beat you, or did something that was worthy of leaving him for, and you intended to never come back, wouldnt you pack a really big suitcase, or several bags? wouldnt you pack all of your belongings, well as much as you could carry, so you didnt have to go back?

keep an eye out for it . . . the really tiny suitcase . . . coming to a long-suffering movie wife near you soon!

It has to be a small suitcase so they can have the quick getaway and then when he or she knows that the bad partner is out he or she can come in and clean the house out, or in the flat mate situation from an article last week even steal all your cleaning products and cool shampoo!
It lulls the offending partner into thinking they have left but watch out because they will be back for the lot.
And your picture looks like Stuart Little's bag!

hi Jason,
hey you put alot of thought into that!
i think sometimes its because theyre not really leaving, theyre going to a hotel for a couple of nights to get the husband to appreciate what theyve got and they fully intend to take him back by the end of the film!
i liked in "Waiting To Exhale" how Angela Bassett makes a bonfire out of her husbands belongings when he leaves . . . that made sure he would have no reason to come back!

And they only ever pack clothes in the suitcase. If I was running away I would take photo's, important documents, my favourite books and my computer. Who cares about undies?

Okay well, maybe I'll take some emergency undies.

hi Ruby,
see this is the kind of practical thinking im talking about!
id be taking my computer, my medications, my makeup and my hair straightener! haha
oh and my cat!
actually scrap all that, id change the locks and kick him out!

Yeah, kicking him out is the best option. But if i did leave i would make a point of taking any contraception that happened to be laying about the house.

hi Ruby,
i hope the contraception will fit in your little suitcase!

I think it depends on the movie. Does she have the time to pack or is she tossing a few things in and making a run for it while he's in the shower? Though I agree with Ruby, I'd be grabbing a lot more than clothes. A couple midnight moves from crappy landlords have taught me how to pack. LOL

hi Summer,

well the movie that inspired the post was "The Last Kiss", a romantic comedy starring Zach Braff and Blythe Danner as his mother in law - Blythe feels that her husband isnt paying enough attention to her so goes home and packs a bag and goes away for awhile . . . the bag was REALLY small! haha

but i have seen it happen time and time again in all sorts of movies of varying seriousness

(ps: knowing how to pack quickly and efficiently is a valuable skill . . . but sorry to hear about your crappy landlords)

Hi Morgan, I'm not worried about fitting the contraception in my little suitcase so much as my do-it-yourself-abortion kit. It's got a lifetime warranty. And as everyone who reads your blog knows, I use it every month!

Maybe the small suitcase is the reason they're leaving? I mean, if you're in a relationship with someone that moderates your spending then you'd not have much to pack into the suitcase to start with...

And that's a reason to leave in itself!

hi Ruby,
haha a do-it-yourself abortion kit!
well it is your favouraite hobby, dont let a disagreement with your husband deter you
in the film Vera Drake she has a portable kit, its basically a syringe of soapy water . . . powerful film!

hi alt_ed,
oooohhhhh *penny drops* you could be onto something!
you have to leave the husband BECAUSE you were only allocated an inadequately small suitcase!
thanks for the comment!

Toss his belongings onto the front lawn and lock him out drama queen style. Much more flair!

Hey Morgan,

Maybe the smaller the suitcase the more aesthetically pleasing it looks on the screen? The bigger they get, the more uniform, whereas covering a smaller suitcase in pattern variation and designs is more economically viable. Just a thought, lol - you're right, it's a Hollywood cliche that I never thought of consciously before.

Here is the real reason why the suitcase is so small,
You want to go back and see him one more time because girls love the bad boys.
