Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Thanks to My Subscribers

May 17th 2009 22:31
Thanks to my 112 subscribers and my 2,000 individual readers per day.

Just six months ago I had 59 subscribers about 650 individual readers per day.

This increase in readership has pushed me into the top fifteen writers on Orble, and made Deep Pencil the number one popular blog listed on the homepage.

I currently make around $5 per week from adsense, still only small, but it has grown exponentially from when I first started.

tinkerbell thankyou

Remember in Peter Pan when they said:

You see children know such a lot now, they soon don't believe in fairies, and every time a child says, `I don't believe in fairies,' there is a fairy somewhere that falls down dead.

I think sometimes all the negativity and homophobia on Orble works in my favour. It bands my readers together, encourages solidarity. Those who support a queer friendly network support me, even if they don't shout the loudest and prefer to stay out of the conflict and drama, I can see they are there in my stats.

Every time someone on Orble attacks me about my sexuality I get ten new subscribers.

Every time someone on Orble say "I don't believe in Asexuals," a hundred extra readers from the queer community visit my pages on a daily basis.

It's amazing really. It's like some kind of fairy magic.

Thankyou everyone who takes the time to come here and read what I write. I know many of you are from MySpace, and Facebook, and AVEN, and the University Queer Collectives at Newcastle, Sydney, NSW, UTS, and across Australia. Thanks for following the links, and voting and leaving comments. And thanks to all the people who found me through random Google searches and subscribed because they enjoyed the content.

It is wonderful to know there are so many like-minded people and kindred spirits.

Thanks also to all my Orble buddies who regularly comment across my different blogs, including RubySoho, Norm, Janet Collins, CherylJ, Jason King, Mr Nice Guy, Chris Champion, Spike, Sam Sall, Natalina, Epiphanie, Gene, Mau, Alita, Gaye, Carolyn Cordon, Whitney, Wilson Pon, Jeff Musall, Bill Green, Earl Leonard, Someone, Techman, Noalzumi, Betray The Oracle, Movie Mall, ShaunK, Matt Shea, Mindzle, Jake, Opto, Bryn, JohnDoe, Cibbuano, Fog, and many others, I think the discussions in the comment sections are sometimes a bigger drawcard than the original posts.

I have been blogging on Orble for fifteen months and I intend to continue blogging here for a really really long time.

It's great when you can see progress.

I don't believe in Asexuals - now thank me again for increasing your readership

LOL - I just need to get myself over the next hurdle and break the 500 a day readers that it stays on at the present. Unless I of course post another article on a 12yr old having a baby then readership goes through the roof.

Can everyone please start gaybashing on my pages - I need more readers. Haha

It also has a lot to do with you being a nice person Morgan

im sure your readership will increase without the need for gaybashers to start hounding you across your posts, i wouldnt wish those kind of personal attacks on my worst enemy

Hey, you rock! Glad to see the efforts of the homophobic, anti-semitic (he loves it when I call him that, I say hey if the shoe fits!), misogynist have backfired.

p.s would you say the Taliban is a misogynistic regime or do they only have disgust for "certain types of women"?

hi Ruby,

yeah i feel like getting my pom-poms out and becoming my own cheer squad! haha

"If your a sexist, racist, homophobe or basically an arsehole don't buy this CD, I don't care if you like me, I hate you!"
Kurt Cobain

"My generation's apathy. I'm disgusted with it. I'm disgusted with my own apathy too, for being spineless and not always standing up against racism, sexism and all those other -isms the counterculture has been whinning about for years."
Kurt Cobain

im obviously in a Kurt Cobain quotation sort of mood . . . it is shocking to think he died fifteen years ago and so little has changed in the world of bigots

good point about the Taliban, i wonder if anyone ever goes up to the women being stoned, or burnt etc and ask them to think about why they have been so viciously attacked

im so over these backwards attitudes, i want things to improve and progress, and i am pretty chuffed at the groundswell of support that is present to counteract the efforts of a misogynist bully and his mindless cohorts

Kurt Cobain would be proud

Poor Kurt...that's what finally did him in you know, that people were buying his records without actually having a clue what he was singing about.

But he don't know what it means

Pop Culturist is number 8 most popular on the homepage list, and number 78 in the daily stats (Deep Pencil was 19) but i think the older blogs favour better in that list as the search engines have had more time to crawl the pages

hi Chuck,

thanks so much for coming forward and saying that, i really appreciate your comment!

i remember in the first 3 months i felt like i was never going to get anywhere, but i slowly found an audience, and my first $100 for adsense clocked over in late December 2008 (payout in Feb 09) which was about 10 months of steady blogging from when i first joined up

its so hard to use any one person and their writing as an example, because readership and adsense is so individual, but i think it is encouraging to hear other people discuss their progress

I'm nowhere near your level of popularity yet.. but when only after I month my numbers went from 239 hits/50 indiv.readers in the first week and now last week I did 955 hits and 356 indiv. readers.. it makes you want to keep going and makes you feel like maybe people actually like what you have to offer. Good Luck!

well my first week (Mar 12th, 2008) these were my writer stats:

Hits: 152
Individual Readers: 41
Hompages and Categories: 30
Posts: 19

one month later (Apr 12th, 2008) these were my writer stats:

Hits: 442
Individual Readers: 140
Hompages and Categories: 58
Posts: 101

so at the rate you are going you have achieved TWICE what i did in the first month!

Congratulations Morgan on your work so far, and a great move to thank your subscribers (I should do the same).

My own traffic stats confuse me. I used to have a lot more individual writers, then something happened about a year ago and they dropped drastically, and it's taken a very long time to get anywhere near what it used to be. I don't really understand it, since I've not changed anything really. Still, I have a lot of subscribers.

hi JohnDoe,

well i am playing to the crowd

hi Bryn,

well ive suggested it before to other people on the Writers Forum / Orble News, and then i thought well that could be a nice idea for me too . . . my subscribers have increased by a HUGE amount just recently, and i always miss my significant anniversaries and birthday (feeble mind haha) so i thought this was a better way to acknowledge all the support

personally i think the subscribers are more important than the internal votes / karma, as you can gauge who will be regularly reading in future

hi Samantha,

i know i am considered "controversial" but i rarely write on news or politics, some of my most popular posts have been on funny videos or pics, or interesting trivia . . . i dont know exactly how that could translate to Vintage Food, but many of the most successful tv chefs have won their audiences with humour, trivia, passion, and personality . . . essentially i think everyone has the potential to engage like that

excellent work getting in the popular list!

thanks for the cool comment!

An anonymous emailer sent this response to my post. The person is not interested in joining Orble but I thought that it was fair that I publish his comments anyway.

Deep Pencil does not endorse all comments placed on its site but allows them to be displayed in the interests of Freedom of Speech.

From: 'Notes From the Gay Agenda':

Are Christian men swayed by The Devil when they attempt to make homosexuals feel unwelcome? The term abomination is bandied around on blogs like a logo on The Devil's headband getting over-exposed by the media at an anti-gay rally from Fred Phelp's God Hates Fags days.

I have heard that wanting a queer friendly site is moronic. That seems homophobic to me. In 1996 RSL president Bruce Ruxton called gay servicemen fairies at the RSL State Conference. He said it was "unbelievable" that the Australian Defence Force allowed an army float in the Mardi Gras and added, "The big bronzed Anzac is now turning into a fairy". Do you think it is appropriate for a child to hear homophobic statements? Homophobia is designed to ostracise God's children, to pressure parents to disown their sons and daughters, to break up families.

When David, the future king of Israel, beheaded Goliath he did so without the use of armour. King David had a romantic homosexual relationship with Jonathan. Which is the more noble feat?

I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother; you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women.
2 Sam 1:26

After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
1 Sam 18: 1-4

Christians are disobeying and disappointing God by refusing to acknowledge same-sex love. If you express homophobia you are a tool of Satan. The Devil Incarnate. Inhospitality and passing judgment are sins. They are offences against God. Now God, being infinite in majesty, even the smallest sin is an infinite offence. God's thoughts are beyond our comprehension, He rewarded and blessed David who was true to his nature and embraced same-sex love. Do not defy the Sacred Scripture.

real quick question Morgan, since you have a domain site. If I take over a domain and lets say it's called sportsdaily.com, can I keep my blog name and page the same "Two Cents from Beantown"? I want it to open the same and look the same. I don't want to have to switch the name of the blog to, for example, the domain name. Does it work that way?

hi Chuck.

If I take over a domain and lets say it's called sportsdaily.com, can I keep my blog name and page the same "Two Cents from Beantown"?

yeah absolutely, and a good example of this is Cibbuano's "20/20 Filmsight" blog, the domain on that one is www. moviecritic.com.au (CLICKHERE to view)

My Orble > Modify > Blog Tag

its the first drop-down box and you can enter any blog name you like there, regardless of domain name

or alternatively you could create a banner displaying the blog title "Two Cents From Beantown", but it will give you a slightly different look to your current layout

My Orble > Settings >Title Settings > Title Image > Upload

you can search for available domains on the Inactive Blog List HERE

i see SportingDaily.net is available, you usually get better traffic from taking over an existing domain, and Jon can set it up for you instantly, as opposed to waiting for the purchase of a new one

feel free to ask as many technical questions as you like, if i know the answers i will try to help

What a crack up. Why is God so touchy anyway? It's like I can't sneeze without it somehow pissing him off. You'd think the Creator of the Universe and the worthy adversary of the Devil would have a somewhat thicker skin.

Oh that's right. It's not God at all. Just people who think they are God and somehow have the authority to speak for him.

Here's a question: why do we tell small kids that their imaginary friends are not real when so many adults have an imaginary friend themselves?

hi Techman,

aww youre a sweetheart *blush*
what an awesome comment, thanks so much for your kind words!

i remember Lady Henrietta Muddling (somewhat ironically) made a similar suggestion about hiring someone to moderate on the network

Is there any way you (or Orble) could employ someone to read every post? There's a lot of bloggers on Orble who would do it for next-to-nothing. They blog for nothing.

Jon's response:

Orble won't be employing a full-time policeman to read each post as they are published.

I don't think it would improve the situation very much (as shown by the exchange above!) and would cost much more than $40 per week.

Really Long Link

its funny because the same person was shaking in his boots when he thought my employment by the Orble network was on the cards

you are probably scaring quite a few people by suggesting i become staff, it seems to be the greatest fear of some

they have already been circulating the conspiracy theory that i am sleeping with Jon to get more "unparalleled lateral freedoms", and compiling a "purge list" and pussy-whipping Jon into removing accounts willy nilly because i am an "anti family liberal militant gay activist" with a hidden agenda

i dont have anywhere near the clout that a few grumpy old men think i do, im just a regular blogger, like you and every other member, who creates content for the network, but i dont mind adding what i can to the community in the way of tips and advice if it helps newbies

Comment by Morgan Bell

hi Ruby,

i see you found The Ethiopian Eunuch's comments as funny as i did, it must be a new trend for biblical characters to submit anonymous sermons to Orble posts

yes you can keep it looking exactly the same if you go to a domain . . . when you get your domain, if you find your blog title automatically changes follow this section of my advice to change it back:

My Orble > Modify > Blog Tag

its the first drop-down box and you can enter any blog name you like there, regardless of domain name

have you requested a domain from admin yet?

Comment by Morgan Bell

May 19th 2009 17:32
hi Chuck,

send an email to charles@orble.com or support@orble.com and ask about taking that domain

keep posting to your existing blog, it may take admin a couple of days to respond

when the domain is added to your account, Jon moves all your existing posts over to that domain, it all happens automatically, so anything you have posted to "Two Cents From Beantown" (including all the comments you have attracted) will appear on SportRamble.com the same day you gain access to it

with Amazon i have not made a single cent, i get less than 10 clicks per month and none of them convert . . . ive been too lazy to include targeted Amazon ads in very many of my individual posts, i just leave that "favourites carousel" in the sidebar

Now God, being infinite in majesty, even the smallest sin is an infinite offence. God's thoughts are beyond our comprehension,

So is that sentence.

I'll be a regular visitor on your movie site from now on.. I like it! I finally broke down and bought Good Will Hunting which has been in my top 5 all time movies personally. All I can say is, the way they captured the humor amongst friends in Boston in that movie, was as dead on as anything I've seen.. Jus an all around great movie.

Take care,
Chuck

hi Ruby,

its because of your age, if you were old and miserable you would just accept everything you are told and not bother with all this critical thought

you are just a kiddy, even though you are in your 30s, and i am a precocious drug addict (forget that its prescription drugs for chronic pain, thats not as inflammatory) kiddy, even though im age 28

smells like kindy spirit, apparently . . . well says the man who used to proudly flaunt his supposed alcoholism, he was an expert on spirits at one point, when he was using Orble as a dating site trying to impress the kiddies in vain hope of a mercy fuck

Lubricate your mind and free your inhibitions
Do drugs and booze. It is cool to do drugs and booze then blog about it. If you wake up some years later confused over whether you are Martha or Arthur then the program is working.

i guess he got told to stop pretending to be a drunk, because at 50 years old it becomes a bit hard to look down on others when you are peeling yourself out of the gutter each morning

Interesting reading here. My stats are nowhere as impressive as yours, and I am going to start a TAFE course next week, so I'll be busy, busy, busy. Wish me well. Certificate IV in Community Services Work.

Hey girlfriend, I was thinking of doing that course too! We'll see how I go with this lot first. I'm very much interested in what the Mental Health Orientation subject teaches me.

hi Carolyn,

i hope you find it really satisfying!

i was also tossing up learning how to be a tai chi teacher, as there are so few reliable programs around my area

My mother does tai chi once a week and she loves it. I sit on the computer moving my fingers in precise ways, and I love that. I spend more time doing my comp chi than mum does her tai chi. Daily, for hours, for me, as opposed to once a week for an hour or so for Mum.
