Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

the best thing you will ever put in your mouth . . .

April 26th 2008 16:04
its like eating a handful of fluffy white cloud . . .

sometimes my mother turns our kitchen into a little mini english bakery and delights the family with piping hot treats from the oven . . . more recently she was reminded of the technique of mixing scone batter with the fizz of lemonade to give that light fluffy lift that practically disolves in your mouth . . .

i am not a cook by any stretch of the imagination but the british colonist in me feels the need to press my culture on to the rest of you and INSIST you attempt this recipe next time you have an afternoon tea:

NEVER FAIL SCONES

1 1/2 CUPS SR FLOUR
PINCH SALT
1/2 CUP CREAM
1/2 CUP LEMONADE

MIX ALL TOGETHER & PUT ON TO A FLOURED BOARD
CUT UP AND PLACE ON TRAY
BRUSH TOP LIGHTLY WITH MILK
BACK IN MODERATE TO HOT OVEN (15 MIN)

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word scone derives perhaps from the Middle Dutch schoonbrood (fine white bread), from schoon (pure, clean) and brood (bread).

Scones are heaven! Serve with jam and cream and pretend youre in a cottage in ye olde england or wee bonny scotland . . . divine!

this guy is definately not in our kitchen! haha

Okay, when you have a picture of a naked man and the caption "the best thing you will ever put in your mouth", I'm afraid you may be giving the wrong idea...or is that the right idea?

I tried to make them once. My brothers refer to that episode as 'The Legend of the Rock Cakes'. I do love them though, when made by someone else, with jam and cream... and strapping young stud on the side.

Cibbuano,
yeah scones are one of those traditonal "plain" foods that i cant get enough of, like yorkshire pudding, bread and butter pudding, madeira cake, or pork crackling . . . maybe a bit of deep fried newspaper haha

Ruby,
do you find its easy to read some hidden undertone into everything i say lol

Tracy,
yeah im with you, the most ive ever baked was packet-mix muffins . . . instructions: add water haha you cant go wrong! and even then the ready-made ones are so much more convenient! you need to find someone who loves baking (like a mum or a grandma) and give them the recipe and they might let you eat some when try realise how delicious they are!

Michaelie,
BAHAHAhaha rock cakes! bounce them of the walls! im assured this recipe "never fails" due to the lemonade adding the essential fluff! actually did you ever see Patsy on AbFab talk about a strapping young stud saying "buns so tight they were bouncing off the walls"? haha see theres a baking theme throughout!

thanks for all the comments everyone!

hi epiphanie,
oh definately try poring yourself a lovely cup of english breakfast tea and top your scones with strawberry jam and whipped cream . . . guarenteed heart attack! haha
i think englands probably changed a bit since my grandparents were kids, youre probably most likely to sample a world class curry than the boring old tea and scones set-up!

thanks for the comments guys, i had no idea bakery was such a popular topic on orble lol

katyzzz has at least five different 'personalities'. This is her 'Krystal' one with a blog called feelings. I've given up arguing with her.

The humour is essential! The real reason I came and read this post - the pic is not enough - the double entendre in the title and the fact that Morgan wrote it, and she's always good for a laugh.

Humour has more value than stupid posts by you-know-who, as far as I'm concerned!

oh gawd *groan* what is that womans problem?

she told me she was never going to visit my blog again, obviously shes been peeping in my cyber window . . . i didnt realise she was on the censorship board of orble, how can anyone get so offended about scones? haha

first im in trouble for saying my parents are too noisy (CLICKHERE to see more . . . ), now im in trouble for praising my mothers culinary skills? go figure! *shrug*

is it my fault the orble community love nudity?

and what is her obsession with my love life?

What kind of male would any female attract by this means, a sleeze, of course, and what will she end up with, a sleeze and what will she complain about "she can't get a decent guy" well no wonder.

have i somehow indicated im using orble to try to find a husband?

im an asexual faghag with chronic back pain for fucks sake, marriage isnt exactly at the forefront of every good womans mind, look at people on my friends list: gay, gay, bi, lesbian, gay, feminist, film-reviewer, faghag, gay, gay, lol im happy babe, queer and proud, i dont need match-making advice from the humour-less and nasty

her little attack can be found in full if you CLICKHERE

thanks Ruby, Tracy and Michaelie for the kind words and compliments, im glad there are some intelligent sassy women out there who can appreciate irony and value a sense of humour!

(i didnt want to give her the satisfaction of pushing her points up by commenting, im sure more people will read my response over here CLICKHERE to see the last thing i said)

You know what? I missed that whole fight on Gaye's blog. Don't know how but i did. I did read the comment on your original old noisy people post and thought it was unwarranted but poor Gaye's post just unleashed a whole other level of nastiness.

She certainly has it in for you but you've handled it well Morgan. Far better than i would have. Anyone with sense or at least a sense of humour could see that there is no maliciousness in your posts. A naked man whipping cream is not offensive to anyone, namely because men do not have a history of been objectified. It's not sleazy, it's hilarious! I think it was humour and curiosity that led people to click over....we see naked women everywhere, selling everything from jeans to beer to broadband internet. It's about time someone turned the tables a little.

Just keep doing what you do and you go girl!

hey Ruby,
thanks for the support, i appreciate your thoughtfulness!
i dont really know what all this recent antagonistic behaviour is about, so far she is my sole critic, everybody else on orble is really lovely . . .
so far ive created 75 posts (all from the one personality) and theres a naked man on only one of them, the majority are about film or the arts . . .
since the pic display in the popular posts list arrived my post scores have been way down across the board: an article on prince william (33), the wilhelm scream (23), australian cheese (22), starbucks (22), a youtube comedy series (22), and film reviews of Cheaters and The Queen (22 each) . . .
meanwhile posts featuring topless women were consistantly ranking really high, i wondered if there was any correlation?
i wondered if a seemingly boring post with a nude pic would rate well?
well i think we only need to check the rating on this one to see the way the system works, the point is its not so much about the content of your post as the way you market it . . .
i find it very hard to believe that my scone baking kitchen manager "mr whipped cream" is the sleaziest pic anyone has ever seen on the internet or in the media . . .

Comment by RubySoho

Hey you don't have to explain it to me, I understand your intentions. And you were right. Sex sells, it surely does.

But yeah, the pic display ain't no friend of mine either. Somehow i don't think a naked picture of the leader of Hamas or the Israeli PM will get them coming in...or would it?

Haha she's had a few digs but it's you she's really got it in for! She's generally pretty spiteful with everyone I think, and dismissive of other people's opinions, oportunistic, rude, ignorant, sometimes snide and passive-aggressive, sometimes downright nasty...

She has her new fobz one, plus the two really inane ones, Holly and Techno, and katyzzz and Krystal, who seem to be used to convert the world to her conservative ideals, while putting everyone else down. Months ago I asked her about the other 'personalities' and she got narky, but if she was going to be so obvious and humourless about it what did she expect? It's ridiculous, and really, you just have to laugh - any excuse, hey.

This is the post that made me wash my hands of her.

now it feels a bit scary, like Norman Bates in the old roadside hotel....

well, anyway, I have just previously posted a retort to "Krystal" on her nasty 'nude' photo attack post!

I have brought up the hypocrisy of her attack, on you Morgan, and the gorgeous cream puff whipper image, because of the image she used herself in a recent post, which Raven took offense to, as demeaning to men, and although I can laugh at almost anything, in this context, it means Krystal/katyzzz is full of the proverbial.

What she accuses you of, using lurid images to attract votes, is exactly what she has done, the only difference being, her image is not pretty eye candy, it is an ugly satirical sexist cartoon.

cheers...keep up the good work...and is katyzzz really on the "censorship" panel??? How on earth could that happen??? All too confusing for me!

But I'm sure she would have instigated this new family friendly thing - but at least it only removes non-family friendly posts from the blogs of the people who ask for them removed, not from the homepage or anything.

Ah, censorship.

I think, Morgan, you hit it on the head: the Orble community loves a little bit of skin. Not full out, but just enough to get the juices flowing.

It's a dangerous line to tread, though... while I like the pics, I'm adamant about not forcing people to see things that they don't want to see. If you think your post is going to be racy, you can flag it with 'Mature' and then the pics don't get shown on the sidebars (I think).

This has to be your new motto/signature/tagline:

"go eat a scone and chill out!"

Also, Wordophilia was not deleted because of katyzzz... back then, there was a core group of female writers, very active in the Orble community. David crossed the line with a very derogatory post, several of the writers were quite upset. Previous to this, we had warned him a few times, but this was too much.

Then David started a new blog, and he agreed that he had posted some offensive material in the past. He was very amenable and pleasant about the entire situation, actually. Well, that's how I remember it - it was over a year ago, I think.

Comment by Cibbuano

April 28th 2008 22:48
also, the nature of any community is that some people get along better with others... the beauty of the Orble network is that it's fairly easy to avoid people that you don't like.

It raises the question though: should we only associate with people that we agree with? Is that limiting?

Hi Morgan,

Hope I'm not too late... I like jam and cream on mine!

Can't cook 'em though... that's the truth, I can cook anything but not scones. It has been unanimously decided amongst my friends that I would have more success in the Hockey Puck business ... but I will get the secret to it one day and work out what makes them rise properly it could well be the lemonade, now that I look at your great recipe?

Thanks for the eye-candy too ..I needed that... boo to those who don't 'get it,' your posts are interesting and warmly-witty, at least ... and they don't give me a sudden overwhelming need to jump off the tallest building I can find *yawn* ...like some I could mention.

Would it be considered 'correct' or 'exploitive' if this was a semi-naked woman?

Whilst I would draw the line at pronography, I agree with Cibbuano and others here, a little "spice" is always nice ... especially in cinnamon scones!

Lilla ...

Cibbuano and Morgan,

My two-bobs worth on this question and as I've said before, with the exception of out-and-out pronography, or anything which encourages pedophillia - on what is/was intrinsically a "writers" community ... I say, all is fair game and if you do not agree with someone's view/personality: do not read, comment or vote ... MOVE ON.

I don't like many of my neighbours, but I don't go and bang on their doors and hurl abuse at them becuase (to me) they behave like animals, now do I?

Such is a blog community, no?

Oh I love all the drama. I just can't believe I missed so much of it.

I think Cib raises a good question
should we only associate with people that we agree with? Is that limiting?

I actually do like interacting with people whose viewpoints I disagree with. It forces me to assess what it is I believe and why. And when they raise points I know little of, it encourages me to research and thus broaden my own knowledge. In fact it was interacting with ultra patriots who think Bush is doing a damn fine job that inspired me to start blogging in the first place and gave me the idea for the article I just had published. So yeah, sometimes its good to sleep with the enemy.

hi D. Armenta
a couple of hairnets! haha

Tracy,
who knew scones were so contoversial?

hi Cibbuano,
i think "go eat a scone and chill out!" should definately be my motto, it basically sums up my thoughts on most things!
i interpretted "mature" to mean the graphic discussion or depiction or sex or violence, not a happy-go lucky male model with exposed torso . . . but regardless i think when some people decide to launch a personal assault they will use anything as an excuse . . . it can be hard to avoid somebody who is following you around with taunts and insults, although i agree with you in essence that name-calling and mud-slinging is completely pointless and i am surprised at people who instigate such things unprovoked?
thanks for the info on "wordophilia", im sure everyone was wondering exactly what happened, it is good when the senior orblers pass on their knowledge!

Ruby,
I had no idea about this multiple personality thing myself until michaelie raised the topic in the comments of this post and since then many fellow orblers have come out and substanciated the claim . . . i completely agree that debate is healthy and worthwhile, but outright slander and hatred is unnecessary (i know you have been the target yourself many times)

Lilla,
hello lovely lady! its never too late! we always appreciate your imput!
i wish you every success with the scone cookery, they are a delightful treat served warm out of the oven . . . dont eat hockey pucks . . . and dont jump off tall buildings . . . im glad you liked the recipe, pic, and general concept of the post . . . all that you say is fair and balanced as usual!

Johnny Come Lately,
haha oh no im responsible for a late report . . . you had better write a scatching post blaming me for the woes of the world! haha
thanks for joing us for a good read and some fun . . . i love when the comments are more entertaining than the original post, i feel like we are all writing together as a team!

now Gaye,
dont try to tell me you dont have the exact same life-sized kitchen ornament next to youe chopping board! you pretend to be all coy! haha

thanks for the comments and discussion everyone!

Just wondering how all that is possible anyway?// I thought we were only allowed ONE persona/identitiy? We can have many blogs but just all linked, as we all seem to do...now I wonder whether there is actually only about ten people on Orble....now that is a worry...

i like how ms bates is your greatest fan, actually you should consider yourself lucky as she finds almost everything offensive, you must have the magic formula to keep her happy!

Good grief Morgan I don't check your blog for 24 hours and you have enough comments to meltdown the server! I gotta catch up on all of this.
