Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

The Difference Between Blogging and Death

May 20th 2009 19:11
As any old, burned out hermit and part-time e-lawyer would know, blogging is very different to death.

An internet persona is virtual, not real. When an internet persona "dies" they can resurrect themselves an unlimited amount of times by re-registering. When a real person dies, thats it, lights out, the end, no second (third, forth, fifth, or sixth) chances. It is the difference between fact and fiction. To claim a closed internet account is the same as a real human death cheapens the value of life.

Blogs do not cause riots or rapes or decapitations. They are words on a page. There are over 900 billion pages on the internet, with about 30 billion of those on the "surface web" that search engines crawl. It is estimated that 57 % of web pages are written in English. If you honestly think a non-English-speaking terrorist in the caves of Afghanistan or the jungles of North Korea is sitting around on a laptop waiting for their instructions from an Orble blog post page, you need to see a psychologist. You are suffering from paranoid delusions due to your isolationist lifestyle and have lost all sense of proportion.

Remember what happened to Septimus Smith when he lost all sense of proportion?

If you create a blogging account and choose to remain anonymous by selecting a pseudonym to write under (ie: not your real name), you cannot sue anyone for perceived slights on your "character". An anonymous internet profile is not a real person, it is a construct, a username, a login, a fiction. You cannot sue because someone disparages a fictional character you created and chose to play online. They do not really exist.

If you are having trouble discerning the the difference between the virtual world and reality please contact Lifeline or BeyondBlue or consult your GP for a referral to a mental health professional.

However, please note, the owner of a blogging network is responsible for removing hate speech from his registered domain. That is a reality. As a business person he registers the site with his own name and real contact details and is liable for content inciting hatred against specific ethnic groups and minorities. He may also choose to remove things that are simply unpleasant, not for legal reasons, but to provide and stress-free environment for his existing users and promote the site's reputation when seeking to recruit new users.

If you have your content or your account removed you have the following options:

1) Create a new post, comment, or account and adjust your behaviour accordingly.

2) Find a different blogging network that is more suited to your abrasive personality if you feel you are incapable of change or learning from your mistakes.

3) Buy a webcam and go to YouTube.

Claiming to be "dead" and crying about some perception of others "dancing on your grave" are not the actions of a mentally balanced person. Steer clear of open windows.

blogging death

hi Alita,

oh thats a shame, i was enjoying your posts . . . if you end up writing somewhere else let me know the url to your blog and ill subscribe

i remember when i first joined i came across from MySpace and i really missed the categories like "Life", "Friends", and "Blogging" etc, they accommodated for journal-style blogging better with their options

as for copyright, if you did feel like continuing here, or returning at any point, all you have to do is send admin an email via charles@orble.com and request to retain full copyright and Orble always obliges

i like the expression "lives out loud", i also have no qualms about using my real name and meeting internet buddies in the real world . . . i think Facebook is kind of revolutionary in the way it asked people to use their real names, ever since i joined there i just stick my real name on everything i write, whats the point in hiding? i understand some people value their privacy but i dont really care

your FarmTown is enormous now, im in complete awe! haha i love that application

Can I get that on a T-shirt?
I've got a job interview is all.
I think it should do the job.
God knows, I'm incapable.

In the interests of Free Speech, I am compelled to tell you that Free Speech does NOT apply to you.

The difference between blogging and death? Is this a thinly veiled death threat. Sorry- Death Threat? I shall be contacting the Anti Discrimination Office at 10 am tomorrow morning.

The Great Purge continues.

hi Ruby,

man, you just cant argue with that kind of logic can you?

i like how im the one supposedly throwing a tantie here when im practically the only one who hasnt threatened to sue

i cant say anything anymore without someone accusing me of being part of some far reaching conspiracy theory or mad-capped power play

i think my level of self-absorption is nothing compared to people who think Orble blogs influence world politics, or people that liken themselves to resurrected biblical character . . . gawd, give me a break

Blogs do not cause riots or rapes or decapitations. They are words on a page.

So is the Qur'an, and the bible. That guy who got killed over the pictures of Mohammad... they were just ink dots on a page too.

I do tend to agree with you though... Words on Orble are hardly going to change the world. But still, words do have more power than just being ink on a page.

hi Someone,

two points

a single web page (esp on Orble) is substantially less distrbuted than the Koran or the Bible

also, i do not believe people kill and inflict cruelty and torture because of any document, they may use the document (or book) as an excuse but it is their own prejudices that cause their hatred

i would not blame video games or movies for the obscene actions of an individual, so similarly i think shielding yourself with a holy text is a cop out

hi Janet,

its a classic hey!

hi Lukas,

you do know the wrath of a high-pitched twink will be upon you for daring to comment on this network?

haha you like to pokr the wild animals too

Morgan, it would be a kiosk, if there's a bunch of terrorists sitting in front of the computer and waiting for the next instruction to destroy the world! LOl

By the way, where did you got the pic? It seems like the person inside the pic have been struggled to get the life with computer. Unfortunately, he/she didn't make it...

This was really interesting. What I find hard to understand is the way some blogs and pics are deleted by the host. I write blogs every day on My Space and they are mainly just for fun, nothing too serious (you know how silly I am) but my pics were deleted and I got a message saying I had violated the terms of use. I spent ages trying to find out what had offended them but never got an answer. What I didn't understand was my pics didn't contain nudity, there was no profanity and nothing racist. Yet some of the blogs and profiles from rap artists have swear words littered all over the profile and some of the blogs make fun of rape or abortion and really are offensive.....I don't get it. I am using my pics again and haven't had any further trouble but it seems to me that it must just be random checking otherwise half of the blogs would be deleted.

GAYE
If images contain people and/or animals, that may be one of the problems. I was a member of a gay community site that refused to allow me to post a photo of me holding our ancient pug dog, because they argued it could suggest bestiality to someone....

Well, I love Stella, BUT.... not that much thanks!

It also appears that (according to Wikipedia info) posting images of people, without their consent, with a record of such on file, may be blocked, as you may infringe their privacy.

There are various variations depending what country you are in at the time.

Morgan

as you already well know, I have been a champion on the Orble site regarding vilification and libel, and so we are in agreement on matters in general regarding such, however, I do beg to differ on one point you make, that regarding people not being able to claim a video game affected their behaviour.

Why it is possible to argue that a psychological condition pre-existed some action and the use of a computer/console game, and therefore was an inherent aspect of a subject's nature, it has been shown that intensive online and/or computer/console game playing does affect some psyches.

Possibly one could argue that intensive game playing may induce a form of brainwashing or conditioning. I know from an early experience I had myself that, after playing a game intensely for three days, I woke up realising I had started incorporating the game experience into my dreaming. I soon stopped after that, and used games on a more restricted time scale.

What the future holds with the virtual reality game experience really worries me, particularly when combined with the psychosis enducing drugs that flood society these days.

cheers

fog

P.S. One other thought, although you argue against the rights of people using a non de plume, it is a fact of law that people who write under such, have copyright protection of the work they produce under that name. I would suggest that, possibly, an argument could be made in a court of law, if a published writer using a psuedonym, was publicly libelled, but, admit I am unsure..interesting concept, I wonder if there is a precedent...

hi Gaye,

i would like to see a system where people were actually notified when they breach the rules, if things are explained you know how to avoid making the mistake in future, whether that be on Orble, MySpace, Facebook, or anywhere else on the net

hi Fog,

you raise a couple of interesting points there

i think theres a difference between a video game (or movie, or tv show, or music, or art, or literature, or websites) infiltrating your dreams and altering your behaviour . . . i think people that play violent video games are not going to be any more likely to commit violence in real life, i know some would argue it desensitises, but i think that is our whole entertainment culture and i think it would be impossible to point to one particular game as instigating a homocide

as for libel against a pseudonym, i dont actually know the answer, but i doubt it . . . it would have to actually affect your real livelihood or reputation . . . if someone made an allegation that a pseudonym did this, that, or the other, the rumour is easily squashed by saying that person does not exist, they are just a pen name, and the pen name does not act in the real world

interesting question though, if anyone knows of a real case that is similar i would love to know the outcome
