Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

The Root of All Evil? is a documentary by Richard Dawkins examining the usefulness of organised religion and the belief in god. It was first broadcast Jan 2006 on Channel 4 in the UK and was aired as two 45min episodes.

I particular found the section on Secular Morality in PART 2 of this documentary to be very insightful. Dawkins interviews evolutionary psychologist Oliver Curry about primordial morality found in chimpanzees. The theory proposed is that morality is the result of evolutionary biology due to reciprocal altruism and kin selection. Dawkins also interviews novelist Ian McEwan (Atonement, Amsterdam, Enduring Love) about the atheist theory that morality is based on empathy and a sense of responsibility.

If you have a spare 90mins and want to watch an excellent thought-provoking documentary then I highly suggest you view The Root Of All Evil? here for free!

Morgan, I was wondering, is this "The Root of all Evil" has any connection with "The Mother of all Evil"?

And here I was thinking the root of all evil was S.L. Bradish

hi Wilson,
i think it used to be money?
i wonder what the Mother of all evil would have to say about this?

hi alt_ed,
the Michael Bray interview in Biblical Morality (2.3) is a friend of a guy who killed an abortionist . . . i guess S.L. Bradish was not available for comment . . .

Thank Dawkins some people around here have a brain.

hi Ruby,
i wonder if brainlessness leads to mistaking incoherant rants for satire?
humour is dead!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it does. It also leads to referring to people such as Dawkins as "third rate intellectuals".
