Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

They say . . .

How will you spend your government stimulus money?

The top predictions are that people will spend it on gambling, alcohol, cigarettes, and illegal drugs. But are we forgetting how much will be spent on tattoos, hot chicks, and overseas trips?

I'd just like to see the 'stimulus' money going to those who need it most. The long-term unemployed, and other recipients of the dole... Also those on carer's pensions, looking after elderly loved ones; forced to take on part-time work, earning peanuts just to put food on the table.

Mau-Medellin.

hi Mau,
sometimes i think people just say silly things because they are being interviewed
and sometimes i think the media purposely selects the silliest people for their interviews to cause a stir
honestly, if the government wants money injected into retail and construction, they would be better off offering rebates and vouchers
thanks for the comment

Now that really looks like a survey of "average" Australians

Don't you just love how some of the most wealthy people are coming out and saying "don't give it to those people. they will just spend it on the wrong things".

It really depends what business they are in though. I don't think the Harvey Norman stores will be doing too badly out of it all. Just think of all those TVs that will move out of his stores!

hi Janet,
yeah perhaps not an accurate cross-section of the community?
the survey was apparently done at 4pm in Cairns CBD, so they probably werent running into too many office workers
a low income friend of mine bought a treadmill from kmart with her stimulus money, and i have two middle income friends who are planning on getting personal trainers in lieu of gym memberships
i dare say, some portion will go on beer and wine and UDL cans . . . but maybe not too much on "high class ladies" haha
actually i think its amusing that people think they can buy cars and overseas family holidays for $900 . . . are they in a time warp?

hi Jason,
oh i had you pegged for spending it on high rolling ladies! haha
maybe you could get a $900 car with a naked lady painted on the bonnet!
every time i say "lady" you are thinking "man", arent you?

hi Norm,
your writing inspired me to rekindle my bonds with my bogan community
ahh Pape, he was the dude trying to stop the stimulus package hey?
lesson learned: never get between a bogan and their tat

Drinking rum and driving a car.
That's another two things I can't do.

I did them both once and I ended half-way up a tree, both times.

Just fractionally bogan: entirely cool.

hi Norm,
rum does make you feel like a pirate . . .
imagine if you drank it with Tom Cruise in Somalia?

I think I might spend it on a tattoo that actually says 'this is what I spent the government stimulus package on.' Or maybe I'll just put it in a box and bury it in a backyard, so I have something saved away for when the entire financial system collapses.

I haven't heard that word 'bogan' for ages. That takes me back a few years. I never even knew people still used it.

hi Samaritan,
ive kind of established myself on Orble as the token bogan, i use the word fairly frequently
i spent my highschool years in Newcastle and the lessons i learned there about binge drinking and general bogan social etiquet will never leave me!
i like your idea for the tat . . . better than getting love-hate written on your knuckles!

April 27th 2009 12:34
Morgan, It's a bit harder to find somewhere on your body to fit 'This is what I spent the government stimulus package on' though.

Comment by Morgan Bell

April 27th 2009 12:40
hi Samaritan,
i guess it depends what size the font is! haha
perhaps such a tattoo would be most suited to ladies with really wide arses, or a classy bloke seeking full arm or leg coverage . . .

Comment by samaritan

April 27th 2009 12:44
Now that would make a good newspaper article. Forget roaming the streets at the time of the day when you're most likely to get comments from people who aren't planning on spending it reasonably. All you need is one lady with a wide arse and 'This is what I spent the government stimulus package on' tattooed across it. I think it would say it all.

You will just have to stop parking in those "No Stopping" zones. Otherwise your money is just going to go back to the government.

The comments that this post has generated, though, makes me think that tatooists will be very stimulated indeed.

I cannot tell you how much I love the term Bogan. I wrote a post some time ago when I first heard the term asking what it meant, and since then, I use it in conversation fairly regularly, with my American counterparts looking at me like I'm crazy!

Here is my post about "Bogans":

Really Long Link

By the by, I'd certainly love to have the problem of deciding how to spend a stimulus check!

Alright i don't live in Australia at all I'm from the U.S. We have had a lot of stimulus's here if you want me to i could find out what the average American is gong to do with their stimulus money.
P.S. it just seems weird hearing Australians talk about over sea traveling when all i want to do is travel over seas to Australia

Tattoos, now why didn't I think of that? It would be so cute if I had a little unicorn somewhere special that I could show when people asked me how I spent my gift from the govt.

But I don't think I'm getting this latest largesse because of something to do with not actually being a taxpayer. Except we're all taxpayers. If we buy something, we pay tax, unless it's one of the few things not covered by GST. I didn't have to pay income tax last year, so no cheue in the mail for me.

hi Janet,
yes i see quite a few people taking an interest in the tattoos! haha
my life is a virtual monopoly board . . .

hi Natalina,
bogan is a very cool word!
i will be sure to check out your post, thanks for the link!
i also like the words dero, feral, and slapper . . .

hi The Nameless One,
come to Australia and experience all our tourism department offers!
you could have a barbeque with Paul Hogan!
for Australians, being an island, everywhere is overseas, but we usually just skip over to the nearby tropical countries, many people go to Bali, Fiji, and Vanuatu etc

Carolyn Cordon,
now a unicorn really would be a cool tattoo!
very feminine!
you know, im not exactly sure how it works, Carolyn, i think you just have to of filed a tax return and you are awarded the grant regardless of how much tax you payed, i think "tax rebate" is just a label because the tax department is in charge of distributing the funds.

I really think the only people that should have got it are old people and people who are working. It is not that I don't think others don't need it, but old people have been forgotten about for too long. And people who work have never had any handouts so maybe it's time they had a turn. We have been through tough times before and survived, and we will survive this as well. I almost felt guilty about getting the bonus, it worries me that financially we were doing pretty well compared to the rest of the world, and I wonder if now we have taken a step backwards by handing out all this money.

Comment by Morgan Bell

April 28th 2009 05:07
hi Gaye,
you know i really could have used that money two years ago when i couldnt pay my rent or my medical bills, i think less people would be bankrupt and homeless or in extreme debt now if there were more incremental measures that were awarded on a needs basis
i think i wrote above to someone else, if they are genuinely trying to stimulate retail and construction it would be a far better idea to give rebates and vouchers
when you give people cash it tends to get smoked up their bong or wagered on a horse
im a bit of a cynic
thanks for your comment

A friend of mine - who has made sacrifices, worked hard and is particularly well off (and somehow thinks I'm in the same boat) suggested that while he won't be receiving the payment - it would mean a lot to some people.

Damned straight it will champ.

How they spend it will be up to them of course.

Let's just say even though I'm entitled to it - there are other people and fields of endeavour that need it more urgently.

To be honest I still can't fathom the government's thinking on it - given the debt my children will have to pay back to overseas borrowings.

Some debt is good but $50 billion plus talk of a third stimulus package is just scary at present - scarier if you have tats . . .

excuse the existential spontaneity.

just thinking to about a year ago when ruby was the only one who responded to my attempt to go ahead with a melbourne orblers get together... its a fair way to travel for a first time meeting with one person (a date?), and the thought of it sparked a sense of adventure.

oh well boo. i guess it had nothing to do with me.
