Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

what is your TOP 5 ALBUMS OF ALL TME?

April 19th 2008 10:54
earlier this year i was asked to consider my TOP 5 ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

it was a more difficult task than it first appeared but this is what i eventually came up with. . .

1. Soundgarden - Superunknown
2. Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals
3. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
4. Custard - Loverama
5. T.O.O.L - Aenima

there are hundreds of bands and singers i admire, and individual songs i love, but a whole album that is outstanding from beginning til end is much more rare . . . still i think a top 20 would be easier to decide on, theres so many fabulous albums ive missed out

i know everybody has different and unique musical tastes so I was wondering what my fellow Orblers would consider to be their Top 5 favourite albums of all time . . . and why?

i have been browsing lists by Rolling Stone and Time magazine and many individual blogs and i think its quite fascinating how different peoples opinions can be . . .

so what are your TOP 5 ALBUMS OF ALL TIME?

and i wonder if any two people in the whole world would pick the same five?

Chris Cornell from Soundgarden

3. Better Than Ezra: Deluxe

5. David Grey: White Ladder

But Morgan, Soundgarden? Talking Heads? Are you sure you're Gen Y?

Oh and if I meet anyone who has the same top five, not necessarily in that order, I'm marrying them, regardless of gender.

haha hi ruby,

nothing gets past you!
im the weirdest Gen Y person ever!

im nearly 27 but i hit my musical peak from ages 13 - 17 haha rock music was a major interest for me then and i studied all the bands big time (yeah i had no friends)
so i probably have more in common with Gen X

paul kelly is such a wonderful story-teller, and radiohead were such innovators

thanks for the comment

Morgan,

I definitely agree with your Superunknown choice, and I'm 25! Saw them at BDO.. was that 1996?! It was certainly all ages back then.

One must not underestimate the wisdom of gen y, Ruby.

Taking over this year!

hi opto

yes i think that was jan 1997, i saw them on the same tour when they came to newcastle entertainment centre with You Am I and The Fauves . . . i was 15 and my dad took mercy on me and my obsession and took me, i think he lost part of his hearing that night!

now opto, wheres you top 5 list?

i recommend writing the same thing as ruby if youre looking for a fiesty australian wife!

No, it couldn't have been '97...I was there that year and it was the year of Prodigy and Offspring. I'm pretty sure Soundgarden wasn't on the bill. '96 maybe?

ok ive consulted wiki, where all human knowledge is stored, and they say prodigy, offspring and soundgarden all the same year in 97 . . . it was the last time soundgarden toured before they split, and it was sposed to be the last big day out but they brought it back in 99

wiki Big Day Out lineups

manson was at the big day out in 99 but i didnt see him there i saw him in 2003 i think . . . the friend i went with spent the whole night at the bar but i had one of my top concert experiences ever

ive never ever been to the big day out . . . something about the daytime just puts me off haha

I see you are correct Morgan. I hold my 21 year old self in complete contempt and disdain for failing to see Soundgarden perform when they was handed to her on a silver platter.

What was I thinking?

Some pretty excellent lists here. I'm pretty impressed with Morgan's having Tool and Soundgarden. Although as much as I love them I don't think they would make my top 5.

There is so much good stuff.

Led Zeppllin - III
Nirvana - Nevermind
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Radiohead - OK Computer
Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction.

hmm...there seems to be a general theme there. Also Morgan, if you love Tool then I'm sure you're already into Cog. But if not give them a listen, they are excellent, and there new album is easily my favourite release of this year.

hi Geoff,

ahhh Zeppelin . . . classic cool!

RHCP and Nirvana are another couple of my favourites

i dont own any COG but "favourite release of the year" is a fantastic recommendation . . . i think you may have convinced me to look into it . . . thanks for the advice!

I'm having so much trouble narrowing them down. You're right a top 20 would have been much easier. I want to add The Beatles and David Bowie and Led Zep and others, aaaaghh! Mind you these might change if I have longer to think about it but I have come up with four and they are in no particular order:

Legend – Bob Marley
Mezzanine – Massive Attack
Original Musiquarium - Stevie Wonder
Medicine Man - Bobby McFerrin

PS: If all you know about Bobby McFerrin is the horribly annoying Don't Worry Be Happy song, you should give this album a listen it's beautiful and NOTHING like that song.

hey cheryl

ooo bob marley, very cool - and thats the album with all the best songs on it - buffalo soldier, no woman no cry - so good!

im curious about this bobby mcferrin now . . .

oh hey if you were gunna pick a beatles album which one would it be? im a huge fan of rubber soul . . . it nearly snuck into my top 5 . . .

3.Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring

I am currently celebrating managing to get tickets for Massive Attack at the Royal Festival Hall!! (14th and 20th June 08)

hi Niki,
you sound like a really relaxed kind of chick, that is a wonderful mellow collection . . . i might have to go and buy a copy of Mezzanine now it has appeared on two peoples TOP 5 . . . Massive Attack have an amazing sound, featured in a few films too . . . enjoy the concert(s)!

2. Sleepwalker - Astral
3. Young and the Guestlist - paradise Boys
4. Love is a Hero - Keith Varon
5. Mayday! - Shades of Day

oh sandeye, im so embarassed, i havent heard of a single one of those artists, i must be getting old! lol

thanks for sharing your list though, they must be decent albums if theyve made someones TOP 5 . . . i will have to stop being so musically lazy and get out and investigate something different . . . your list sounds like a great place to start!

It'd be good if people could put what genre the less mainstream albums are so we can have an idea if it's our cup of tea..

hi Bryn,
thanks for your contribution!
it is extremely hard to narrow down your favourites to JUST five!
i had to go and do a wiki search on every one of the artists on your list because as usual your knowledge of the arts is far wider than mine lol
but im wondering, are you originally european or of european descent?

Hey Morgan ... Wow, I discovered that Fashion have a Wikipedia listing, how cool, I didn't expect that.

Yeah, my mother is half English-half German, my dad's a Kiwi. I was born and raised in New Zealand, but have lived in Australia for ten years.

my mums a kiwi too (from Nelson) but me and my sister were born in australia . . . i only asked because a taste in jazz and german/euro bands is very unusual in mainstream aussie culture, i thought you may have been fortunate enough to have an outside influence . . . well lets be honest anything other than football, meat pies, utes and beer is unusual! haha

Hey don't stereotype us there.

As a fifth gen Australian, I couldn't survive without the euro, latin, asian, hell even canadian influence on my taste on everything from (ahem) to food to music and movies.

Here's to anyone open minded and living in Bondi.

Cheers

Hold up - was that u talking about marriage Morgan? I think I finally got what was going on in those first few comments....

Is Loverama the one with 'I got a new apartment ba-beh"?

Miss those guys... and You Am I in their Sound as Ever stages... you can catch me crying while listening to Berlinchair. Not too sure why... PTS?

Comment by Morgan Bell

May 17th 2008 12:59
hey opto,

same band, different album, but generally all their songs sounded much the same . . . Loverama had:
Girls Like That (Don't Go For Guys Like Us)
Ringo (I Feel Like)
Almost Like a song

Ruby offered to marry anyway who picked the same albums as her so i was just suggesting if you were looking for a bride you may want to copy the list! lol

Morgan, my tastes and interests in music and film have always been outside the norm.
