Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Whispers and Screams: recent wise words

March 18th 2009 19:59

"Sometimes in the morning I look out across the day, and I see the fist fight between the wind pushing me back and the sun calling my name."

Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) on Twitter.

"If we have the choice of how to percieve reality - which we clearly do - if there is no objective truth, then why not allow our perceptions to be coloured by endless beauty? Theres enough tyranny and pain in the world, why not just see relentless joy?"

Russell Brand (UK comedian) on Rove.

"Oh, yeah. That’s like getting hate mail from Hitler. They’re literally terrible human beings. I’ve read their newsletter, I’ve visited their website, and they’re just rotten to the core. For an organization that prides itself on Christian values - I mean, I’m an atheist, so what do I know? - they spend their entire day hating people. They can all suck my dick as far as I’m concerned."

Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy creator) on a complaint filed against the show by the conservative Parents Television Council.

"The days of using my name as a pejorative are now over. The right wing turned me into an accidental spokesperson for the liberal, majority agenda. Thank you, Republican Party. You helped us elect one of the most liberal senators to the presidency of the United States. We couldn't have done it without you."

Michael Moore (Sicko, Bowling For Columbine) in the Huffington Post

"What do you mean what happened? Look at me. What do you think happened? I'm a 41-year-old man with a bra filled with koosh balls! I'm an imbecile. She couldn't date an imbecile anymore."

Jimmy Kimmel (US comedian) explaining why Sarah Silverman broke up with him on The View while dressed in drag impersonating Rosie O'Donnell

I honestly am enchanted by Russell Brand. I love his turn of phrase, and your peacock analogy is spot on. Often he spews the most ridiculous garbage, but then something just amazing comes out of him. This is my favorite. I actually have written it down because I thought it was so glorious:

It's difficult to believe in yourself because the idea of self is an artificial construction. You are, in fact, part of the glorious oneness of the universe. Everything beautiful in the world is within you. No-one really feels self-confident deep down becuase it's an artifical idea. Really, people aren't that worried about what you're doing or what you're saying, so you can drift around the world relatively anonymously: you must not feel persucted and examined. Liberate yourself from that idea that people are watching you.

The place that repairs my lawnmower puts quotes on their invoice. The last one had a Gandhi and a Mao. Next time my lawnmower breaks down, I'll send it to you, if you don't mind.

i got a letter from amnesty international today. it had pictures of the devastation in gaza.and i looked at it and i thought to myself "if i have the choice of how to perceive reality-which i clearly do- then why not allow my perception of gaza to be coloured by endless beauty? there is after all enough pain and tyranny in the world, why not just see relentless joy in these pictures of dead children?"

hi Ruby,
yes Gaza is not a good example of beauty
although i was reading Brands wiki page and saw he was part of the British protest against the violence in Gaza
perhaps to put him better in context i should add, he was talking about his own reality, as in how people percieve him . . . he was wondering if his character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall was adapted by the writers to be more like him because he was an unskilled actor or because his real life persona is so popular
Rove said to pick the more positive option and what is quoted above was his glib response
im sure given a more serious topic his answer would have been more serious . . . or maybe not, who knows with these comedians

While I absolutely adore some of the profound statements that some people come up with and would really love to be creative enough to come up with something as good that could be my statement, and mine alone, I am curious to the inclusion of Russell Brand.

Most people would not know or remember, but I did a post last year asking whether comedy should have rules. It included Russell Brand and a prank he pulled with his associate on a radio program in Britain. It was in such poor taste that it ended up with him suspended from his program.

After that, I could not take anything he said seriously.

Sorry.

hi Janet,
actually your post was one of the first times id really heard of Brand
and i agree, that prank was just unfunny, i think i commented you at the time saying something to that effect
i saw Brand in the movie St Trinians the other day and hes been in Australia the last week or so touring and did the Rove program
i just like the way he tied his words together
i wasnt particularly taking him seriously, he is a comedian after all
i just think he has a poetic way of speaking, a uniquely descriptive way of expressing himself
this post is just a collection of phrases that had really stuck in my head from throughout the last fortnight
im not even a huge fan of The Family Guy, i just thought Seth MacFarlanes statement was artfully crafted

I also think that it is fairly common for comedians, especially those like Brand who push the envelope as a rule, to have some of their jokes and pranks backfire. Brand is the first to admit in several interviews that this particular prank was in poor taste.

What seems funny in one's head sometimes is a lot less funny when put into practice.

He's actually done and said a few things that I think are pretty tasteless. But he wins me back with his flowery turn of phrase.

Morgan - Hey, feel free to use the phrase 'Daily Inspirations', I don't consider it 'mine' as there are several other sites by that name... I liked the title you came up with though, I think it's funky.

Can anyone tell me: what was the prank that Brand pulled?

Ruby - Seeing the image you did, you could either choose to get depressed about it or focus on making it part of the generally beautiful mindset you have for the world. In other words, you could think that the destruction you perceive is on one end of the spectrum, up there with all the beauty you can stand, and seeing it makes you appreciate the worth of things that automatically evoke associations with beauty.

Does that make sense?

Hi PoMo, I guess I am just with Janet on this thing. I simply do not like Russell Brand. And I find it hard to imagine how anyone could possibly think that calling up an old man and boasting about fucking his granddaughter and then airing it all on radio could possibly be funny. Did he really think the outcome could be anything other than what it was?

Also, I really don't have a generally beautiful mindset for the world. I think its fucked to be honest. And using the image of dead Palestinians to try and make myself feel good will only result in me feeling guilty because their lives are never going to get any better. I give money to Amnesty International. Like so many others, I blog about Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories.I have had articles published on the issue. I attend rallies. I sign petitions. All of which amounts to no avail. The world still turns a blind eye. Israel continues to murder them without recrimination and the US, even with Obama in charge, continues to tell Israel that it has America's full support. It is the greatest travesty of justice of our time. It is happening before our eyes and no one is doing anything about it.

Oh yeah, the world is fucked.

hi PoMo,

heres some info from the wiki about Brands prank, just to fill you in:

In an episode of the show broadcast on 18 October 2008, Brand and fellow Radio 2 DJ Jonathan Ross made a series of phone calls to the actor Andrew Sachs. Sunday tabloid The Mail on Sunday broke the story and regarded the phone calls as obscene. Both presenters were later suspended by the BBC due to the incident, and Brand resigned from his show.

Really Long Link

After being unable to reach Sachs on his home phone, Brand and his guest fellow Radio 2 DJ Jonathan Ross left four messages on Sachs's answerphone.

During the calls in question, Brand spoke of his prior sexual relationship with Sachs's granddaughter Georgina Baillie, burlesque dancer "Voluptua" with the dance group "The Satanic Sluts".

Ross also shouted out "he fucked your granddaughter". Later messages included further claims of the nature of the sexual encounters, and then sung apologies to Sachs, and Brand jokingly asking to marry Baillie.

Baillie remarked: "I'm thrilled because justice has been done...It's despicable. Calling me that in public, not only does it damage my relationship with my granddad but it could permanently damage my life as well,"

Baillie stated in an interview that:

"I think it's way out of proportion what's happened and I don't hate either of them - I don't at all",

"I think they're really talented comedians and I think a world without Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand would be a very sad, dull place."

She concluded by saying that Brand needed to learn about respecting women, whilst Ross should just think before he speaks.

"I don't have any harder feeling than that".

Baillie also made clear that she would not object to the reinstatement of both Brand and Ross.

[initially] Baillie said that her relationship with Brand had been brief and she now felt betrayed that he had revealed it to her grandfather; she called for both Brand and Ross to be sacked by the BBC, and stated that she and her family would be considering whether to make a formal complaint to the police.

Andrew Sachs has since stated that he had no intention of making a complaint to the police or taking the matter further.

rubysoho you need destruction for creation.

you cannot have a world without destruction. perhaps it's best if you try and escape your unbeautiful mindset of the world. do something drastic!

deviants often push convention and create change and better environments for us all to live in. what we find horrible and unacceptable one era becomes social convention the next minute. this is how a lot of social change occurs. obtuse point i know, when we are discussing a man telling another man he's had sex with his daughter.. but take this broad mindset and you'll find you're angry less often and the truly meaningful things you will feel a hundred times more passionate about.
