Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

Hares have no time to read . . .

July 1st 2008 17:40
how true is this famous quote . . .

In real life, it is the hare who wins. Every time. Look around you. And in any case it is my contention that Aesop was writing for the tortoise market. Hares have no time to read. They are too busy winning the game.

Anita Brookner

so very very true . . . says this old cynic!

Aesop's THE TORTOISE & THE HARE

There once was a speedy hare who bragged about how fast he could run. Tired of hearing him boast, Slow and Steady, the tortoise, challenged him to a race. All the animals in the forest gathered to watch.

Hare ran down the road for a while and then and paused to rest. He looked back at Slow and Steady and cried out, "How do you expect to win this race when you are walking along at your slow, slow pace?"

Hare stretched himself out alongside the road and fell asleep, thinking, "There is plenty of time to relax."

Slow and Steady walked and walked. He never, ever stopped until he came to the finish line.

The animals who were watching cheered so loudly for Tortoise, they woke up Hare.

Hare stretched and yawned and began to run again, but it was too late. Tortoise was over the line.

After that, Hare always reminded himself, "Don't brag about your lightning pace, for Slow and Steady won the race!"

Hi Morgan,

Nice quote from Anita Brookner!

Much like Aesop's fable of the dog with his bone, moral of the story being that greed is dangerous and can end up losing you what you already had... tell that to the ruthless business men and corporations of the world who seem to prove that greed is the main driving force behind major gain. Of course we can get philosophical about it and credit Aesop for meaning spiritual gain, but it's much too late for that

The hare always wins, and the dog who wants two bones will invariably end up with two bones...

Great quote from Anita Brookner

I think we need to be a hybrid of the two! <LOL>

You know there is an essential flaw in the fairytale that always bothered me, namely that the race was always out of the control of the tortoise. His victory depended on the actions of the hare.

Now, had the hare challenged him to a rematch or best of three he would have kicked his slow and steady backside.

I agree with Lara, we need to be a bit of both. A tortare. Except that sounds like seafood sauce.

I loved Aesop when I was a kid, though this wasn't one of my favourite fables. I liked the one where the bald man's wig comes off. Always get a kick out of that.

I have to agree with Ruby, in that it's not so much that the tortoise won as that the hare lost. If the only way you can win is by counting on others shoot themselves in the foot, then that's not always going to be the best strategy.

However, if you look at the fable as more of a cautionary tale urging forethought and steadiness, then I can support that

Ha ha Michaelie a tortare, how about a haroise? Sounds like something nasty you would need removed by a doctor!

hi Tracy,
when i read it i gave a knowing nod! haha

hi Lara M,
ooo a hybrid . . . sounds like a fine idea!

hi Ruby,
i always thought it was like giving someone enough rope and theyll hang themselves! haha
the hare is burning himself out at a young age perhaps? the kurt cobain of hares?
burning the candle at both ends?
i remember seeing an episode of star trek where this species of humanoids spoke entirely in metaphors . . . i could have easily lived on that planet!

hi Michaelie,
ooo a tortare, now thats exciting!
theres quite a few Aesops fables i really like . . . sour grapes is a good one . . . and the ant and the grasshopper is kind of similar to this one . . . they must have been great analogies for people who had boring jobs!

hi Winston,
he does shoot himself in the foot hey!
maybe its a cautionary tale for the hare not to be arrogant and underestimate your rivals?

hi Cheryl,
you love mashing names together!
Michaelie says seafood sauce, you say medical condition! haha
i think they both sound mexican and should wear sunbreros

Hahaha in that case I think I'll stick with my seafood sauce, Cheryl.

Morgan, I would love to come up with my own fable but I think Aesop covered it all, and then some.

Hi Morgan,

Thank God for Aesop and his 'tail...'

For me?

Take the books out of life and you've taken the life out of living... fast or slow.

*chuckle* so many books to read, so little time ... I think Always 18 summed it up best when he said that he would just read until he drowned in a sea of words, waiting till he floated up again a few days later ...

Wise counsel for all the runners Morgan...

Cheers, hope your Sunday is a peacful one, with rainy skies and ample hot chocolates and snuggly doonas, filled with the delights of a thousand wonderful pages of every concievable thing in this universe and others ....

aaah blissssssssssss.......

Unfortunately I have to go out to a dress rehearsal at noon, phooey.

Lilla ...

PS I love the new look, one iota better than before?
