Deep Pencil - the musings of Morgan Bell

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it did it really make a sound? If i post a blog and nobody reads it was there really any point? You have entered the random thinking space of Morgan Bell . . . These are my musings . . . things about my life written off the top of my head . . . written in an informal disjointed style almost completely devoid of punctuation, this is where i flesh out writing ideas, discuss my life, and generally be self indulgent . . . it is also the bargain bin for articles which do not fit in with the film or arts themes of my other blogs . . . so have a wander around my mind, have a laugh, have a think, be nice, and humour me!

shut up misery guts

July 17th 2008 10:31
is there some limit to how miserable a person can get?

and is it really necessary to project this misery on to the rest of us?

some people i really wonder if their face would crack if they smiled!

constantly complaining . . .

relentlessly trying to control the lives of others . . .

i think its all a case of sour grapes . . . if you cant reach the grapes then you will declare they are sour and you didnt want them anyway . . . another one of those fabulous Aesop fables

but whats with starting a petition to stop everyone else from trying to reach the grapes?

whats with forming a commity to ban all grapes from being grown and preventing the circulation of any images representing grapes?

i just dont get these insane calls for censorship!

censor this, and censor that, and stop people from doing this or creating that, stop me from ever seeing anything i dont like or agree with . . . for the sake of the children! what if the children saw?

shut up misery guts!

just SHUT UP!

the time and energy that goes into complaining about what other people can look at is just extraordinary!

HERES A HINT: if you dont want to read other peoples opinions or observe the creativity and humour of others then disconnect the internet, turn the tv off, and tune your radio to the classical station . . . that way you will never have to experience anything new or open your mind in any way

why get so upset about others creatively expressing themselves just because you lack the capacity to enjoy anything?

hi MNG,
haha you are right to be outraged, cartoons are outrageous, possibly more outrageous than nudity, and your outrage should go up exponentially with how long you have to look at it in the popular list!
actually at your rate of popular posts you must be outraging people willy nilly!

hahaha YOU'RE BANNED!
sometimes i really have to ask myself, is this an internet blogging site or a retirement village newsletter?
ive seen church youth groups with more progressive outlooks on discussing sexuality and the arts!

hi Ruby,
oh man, i got myself banned from my own blog! darn! haha
and you know i wasnt even being sarcastic about church youth groups, ive accompanied friends to a few church youth group events in my time and people on the whole were an accepting good-natured bunch . . . none of this "homosexuality is depraved" and "asexuality is ridiculous" crap . . .

hi Chris,
yeah its getting to the Windsor Pilates informercial time of the night!
hey my first idea for a post was just a list of expletives but i feared getting banned from the whole network!
you can criticise the content of this rant all you like, you are free to think of it as a sour post, but it would be excessive for anyone to call for its removal because they didnt like the heading or the display pic or length of time it sat on the homepage
it is the constant appeals for censorship i find miserable, there are many things worthy of complaining about in the world, many things worthy of criticising, but criticising something and willing it out of existance are two different things
each to their own

it always astounds me when geriatrics make irrational censorship claims online... I mean as you've said, if they don't like it turn the PC OFF! And what's more, if its any site in particular that you dislike, STOP COMING BACK!

hi Raven,
im not sure if your aware but apparently children and nannas access the internet and they find toilet seats really offensive!

hi alt_ed,
haha i wonder if boring children to death is a crime?
its probably before your time but there was a classic Salt'nPepa song called "Lets Talk About Sex" which pretty much sums up what i think:

Let's tell it how it is, and how it could be
How it was, and of course, how it should be

Those who think it's dirty have a choice
Pick up the needle, press pause, or turn the radio off
Will that stop us, Pep? I doubt it
All right then, come on, Spin

hi epiphanie,
haha it was all just an excuse to share the cartoons with everyone, i just had to pad it out with some words inbetween
in all seriousness the children in art furor here in Australia is really wearing on my last nerve, everyone coming out of the woodwork trying to tell each other how to raise their kids
i saw an item on the news last night where some old man wanted to stop a little girl from entering body-building comps, she wasnt doing any weight training just athletics and she wasnt dressed sexually, he was just a nosey old biddy telling everyone else what they can do and see
between all the philistines trying to censor the arts (in the general media and here on orble) and people objecting to being spoken about in the same sentence as homosexuals i was suddenly starting to feel like i was in medieval times

Hey Morgan,

You should try researching GLBTI rights in Africa - a real mood elevator - not!

I think of it this way: the conservatives have come out to play for a bit, but hang in there for the next wave of progressive news. Does it come in cycles, or is that just a convenient label we have found for things? At any rate, it's hard to follow any one direction in global politics for long - there's too much going on.

This is yet further argument that anyone under 18 should not be able to access this site...

Vote for J-Orble (Junior Orble)
Vote for S-Orble (Senior Orble)

If this is done, then the habitual complainers will have to shut up..or at least focus on real issues, instead of clogging up the screen space with low brow rants.

Then, once we are separated, we won't have to read the juvenile, idiotic, imbecilic, uninformed, ignorant comments so often left on our blogs!

hi Fog,

thats an interesting suggestion!

however, i really think parents should monitor their own children rather than trying to monitor the site

theres no porn on Orble (except for maybe Ravens blog haha) but if you are a parent and you are concerned you should change your browser settings to block content or purchase one of the many content-blocking software packages available

on Internet Explorer it is fairly simple

Open Internet Explorer.
In the Menubar click Tools > Internet Options > Content.
In the Content Advisor box, click Enable.

kids can only access what their parents let them so bit of personal responsibility could be just the ticket

if someone under 18 has signed up to Orble or browses Orble you can only assume they have their parents permission

Comment by Kleonaptra

July 19th 2008 10:18
Wont somebody please think of the children!

Im sick of this crap man. I posted on it AGES ago - its one of my spotlight posts on the BB adults only show. If the kids are looking for it, let them have it. The problem comes from the embarassed parents who cant explain it.

And Orble....Well, people have come here because its just that little bit more intelligent than other communities. But then, that intelligence seems to equal better somehow, and the self righteousness of writers means once we're being read, we can tell ANYONE how to live their lives.

Its why we became writers after all.

And Jason, that quote is going on my wall man. That is priceless.

Comment by Morgan Bell

July 19th 2008 10:56
hi Kleo,
i would love to read your post, i will check out your spotlight list!
i dont really think Orble in any more intelligent or intellectual than other blogging or networking sites, i think it is far more conservative and political
it seems like for every post saying something positive or educational there are ten little gripers panning it and lobbying for it to be removed
the worst thing a writer can ever do is to stop reading and listening, it is disappointing to see people so set in their ways that they cant even entertain the idea of something different

haha i appreciate your enthusiasm!

its one of those common things they say about writing which applies across all disciplines . . . dont just watch half the news and tune out the stories you dont like . . . if you want to write about a topic you should read all about it from many different sources, but you should also read about the world and everything that goes on in it so you can put your opinions in context

like how i learnt about the Roma on PADSOC

theres really no point burying your head in the sand is there?

Morgan, it's about entrysm, your's and Ruby's. You have morphed into Ruby's sycophant and yes woman, while proffering an image of innocence.

The photo message: Her mouth spews garbage and you're there to get your share and pass it along to those of your ilk.

Postmodem, you're a yapping lap dog.

alt_ed is a metrosexual narcissistic fool and devoid of substance, another yapping lap dog.

You're acting like lemming's, marching into the future full of the lemmings unconsidered certainty that you have all the answers needed . . . the truth is, you aren't even aware of the questions.

Comment by Morgan Bell

July 20th 2008 15:49
Raven,

this post is about an issue which has reached boiling point here in Australia of late, every old nanna and ninny has come out of the woodwork to have a moan about what images are appropriate in the arts and on the internet . . . it is constant and tiring . . . and it is resulting in people thinking they have the right to tell others what they can enjoy and how they should raise their kids

i dont know what your weird obsession is with insulting Ruby lately, or why you are being so aggressive on this particular issue when many of your own posts use nude images to push the boundaries (a freedom which you typically relish)

the first blog i started on Orble was an arts blog called Artist Quirk which i still post to regularly, i actually go to galleries and theatre productions and have friends who are artists and musicians and dancers and actors . . . people in the arts welcome constructive criticism if the context and intentions of their works and productions are considered, but calls for blanket censorship and removal are nothing short of ridiculous

similarly, bloggers suggesting that artworks, non-explicit nudity, and yes even toilet seats, are not suitable pictures to be displayed on the homepage of Orble i also find ridiculous . . . suggesting the arts are not a suitable topic for discussion is ridiculous, and to critique a work it is practical to show a picture of the work

you can call me a sycophant, lemming, or lap dog if you wish but i think you will find my opinions are pretty consistant on this issue . . . are yours?

Comment by tlcorbin

July 20th 2008 16:08
And here you are, attempting to censor me. Participating in the very action you claim to abhor.

My photo pictorial is actually a caricature of your complaint ms I know all about artists. And, you missed it, opting instead to sanction the actions of others that were aimed at me; your silence speaks volumes to your lack character.

Ruby has an agenda, her bias is obvious and you pander to it.

So spare me your rhetoric Morgan, your myopia is obvious.

Comment by Morgan Bell

July 20th 2008 16:31
Raven,

i havent censored a single thing you have posted here, i havent deleted anything or even suggested you censor yourself . . . even though i really didnt get what you were trying to say with your photo pictorial i wasnt about to stop anyone else from trying to figure it out

my role here is not to be your defender, i dont know why you are being so nasty and personal .

also with regards to your comment on entyism:

Entryism - a political tactic by which an organisation encourages members to infiltrate another organisation in an attempt to gain recruits, or take over entirely.

this is a blog, not a war, there are no sanctions or agendas or entryism, it is a simple blog on a blogging network

i dont really think new blogs or bloggers should be considered a threat, the more people that blog on Orble the more traffic the site gets, theres no need to consider things that are new or different to be a direct attack on yourself . . . live and let live

Comment by tlcorbin

July 20th 2008 17:50
When person A allows person B to be assailed by mob mentality, don't look for person B to express gratitude.

Would you mind if I create an icon of you with your face and a dildo so that fellatio is inferred? Trust me, it's easy.

The censored banner was creative, the dildos weren't and as host of this blog, you are responsible for its content, your silence encouraged and empowered him.

It's a tactic and it's in play.

Enough of this, I'm going to go kill fish for a while.

Morgan, Post Modern, kleo, fog, et al it would take very little time to put icons up on all of your posts that are offensive.

HUH?
What does your gripe about this 'alt_ed' dude have to do with me Raven?
I have had to put up with some juvenile behaviour on this site, and got NO SUPPORT from Orble thanks very much, but, at least I made the complaint to the right place and person, and this was after the moron would not apologize by the way, so there is a process you need to follow!

However...

alt_ed can modify his icon to reflect his attitude and thats fine with me, but where he crosses the legal line is when he uses my image without permission and he doesn't have it.

Absolutely correct Raven!

And as long as Alaska has the laws, that cover material on internet, same as here in Oz, you can sue whoever offends you in an Alaskan court, no matter what country the offender lives in!

If not;
1: Ask the offender to withdraw the offensive material.
2: If it isn't withdrawn, complain to Orble.
3: If still not withdrawn, go see your lawyer.
4: Either, you can sue in Alaska, or, save up for a trip down here, and sue away!

I actually agree, that it is way out of bounds for another blogger to use another member's avatar, let alone that person's photo, as his own avatar.

So why have you not complained to Orble?

At the moment, all you are doing is whinge about it, which suggests you don't really care?

Be pro-active about it, if it really bugs you!

cheers
